Soil salinity in Australia (2001)

Increasing soil salinity in Australia is a serious land degradation issue.
All over the country, salt is rising out of the ground and destroying our farms, homes and towns.
To understand why we have this problem, we need to go way back in Australia's history.

I would love to see an updated version of this video. It's fantastic, but it starts to feel a little older. Such an excellent video.

A very serious problem. Costs us 1/2 billion in lost production every year and getting worse. I am amazed that the commenter's voice was so calm, considering the disaster that continues to unfold and worsen to point of irreversibiity. After 5% soil saline saturation, nothing wil grow, and the soil is infertile forever.

I am not convinced that rainwater is the source of the salt. Not only does evaporation from sea to air only contain the water (and not salt), but if rainwater contained salt, and plants sucked up the fresh water, then rain would make the land more salty. I think the salt must have got there from the early times when the land was under-sea. Or from washing down of salty rocks. But not from rain.

Hi Darrel, Rainwater can be acidic if it absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere and becomes acidic. When the acidic solution (rain) meets the soil it reacts with basic components within the soil e.g. calcium carbonate, to create water + a salt. This is what a "salt" is. It is the product of an acid reacting with a base. Rain could be responsible.

Mate you may want to read a book, rain water carries more than just dihydrogen oxide (H2O). Including: Na, I, N, probably more.

How does salt get in the rain? Wouldn't it get left behind when the water evaporates to become a cloud?
@Peter-ob6ue

It doesn't get into rain.

Not salt, but sodium (Na+) the elemental form that makes up the "salt" that we eat (there's many times of salts). As waves crash, sodium is released into the atmosphere and carried by clouds over the land where it falls, attached to water droplets.

It's highly misleading. Rainwater does not contain salt. Salt occurs in groundwater from the rocks and earth

Grow Palm Dates around/in your farms and houses. 1. They can tolerate high salinity 2. They have deep roots (up to 100m) 3. They use massive amount of water These result in control of water table and rain will take the salt back down. + you get one of the healthiest and richest fruits in the world.

CÓMO TAN POCA VISIÓN. DÓNDE ESTÁN LOS AMBIENTALISTAS. REFORESTAR REFORESTAR ÁRBOLES NATIVOS PARA QUE VUELVA EL CICLO DE VIDA. LOS ÁRBOLES REGULAN LA TEMPERATURA EN LA CORTEZA TERRESTRE. PRIORIDAD PARA TODOS LOS PAÍSES DEL MUNDO. RESGUARDAN LAS NAPAS SUBTERRÁNEAS OSEA AGUA. ÁRBOLES. NO EXISTIRÍA EL CAMBIO CLIMÁTICO. NO EXISTIRÍA EL CALENTAMIENTO GLOBAL.

The super continent theory has largely been debunked, oceanic crust would make such a theory not plausible. The continents are already connected via the oceanoc crust, they are not lily pads on a pond freely moving around 😀
@liamfirth2513
@liamfirth2513 4 месяца назад
What? Do you care to link articles that "largely debunk"? Do you know how tectonic faulting works? The crusts form when the tectonic plates fault (in this case pulling apart), releasing huge amounts of magma that cool and form new rock or "crust". Sedimentary layers then form over the top of these igneous extrusions to form sandy/silty seabeds. This information is readily available and will explain in more detail than I have provided the exact processes. The CSIRO are made up of scientists who are experts in their field, what are your qualifications?

@liamfirth2513

You know a 'salt' is an acid reacting to a base right? Salt, as in what you grind onto eggs does not go into clouds no, but the elemental form sodium (Na+) passes the gas/fluid barrier and certainly does.
