2 km. istočno od Sokobanje, u kanjonu reke Moravice na steni uzdignutoj iznad vode nalaze se ostaci srednjevekovnog Sokograda, u istoriji još poznatog pod imenom grad Sokolac. Nastao je u periodu rimskog cara Justinijana ( I do VI vek), za odbranu od Avara i Slovena. Pominje se u vreme Stevana Nemanje oko proterivanja bogumila - tada je prvi put bio razaran. U turske ruke pao je devet godina nakon Kosovske bitke, tacnije 1398. god. U vreme Stefana Lazarevica, zapovednik Sokograda je bio vojvoda Sokolski i Svrljiški Hamuz-beg, koji je bio odmetnik od turskog sultana Muse Kesedžije. Bajazitov sin Musa je 1412. god. sa vojskom pošao na Hamuz-bega, pobedio ga i 1413 god. razorio Sokograd. Hamuz-beg je nakon toga pogubljen a narod iz ovog kraja raseljen u carske spahiluke. Ime Sokograda potice od srednjevekovnih “sokolara”, koji su umesto da daju državi dažbine davali “sokolarinu” ( dresirane sokole), kako srpskoj srednjevekovnoj državi, tako i turcima. Od starog grada su ocuvane dve kule, jedna kroz koju se ulazi u višu tvdavu, i druga na donjem kraju prema brdu poznata kao tzv. donžon kula sa visokim štitnim zidom koji ima otvore za topove. Još postoje ostaci cisterne za vodu, kao i keramickih cevi za dovod kišnice. Danas Sokograd predstavlja znacajan kulturno-istoriski spomenik
Some 2 km. east of Sokobanja, in the canyon of the river Moravica on a rock raised above the water are the remains of medieval fortress Sokograd, in history still known as the town of Sokolac. There are still the remains of a water tank, as well as ceramic pipes for rainwater supply. Today Sokograd is a significant cultural and historical monument.
