Although we are in undesirable and difficult circumstances, this time of pause also presents us with a valuable opportunity to look back and to look inwardly. Printed Matter is initiating a research and presentation series on our own history and the history of artists’ books. We begin this series with Sol LeWitt and a discussion by Printed Matter's Yuchen Chang on his practice and articulation of conceptualism; his subversive yet elegant usage of book form; and his masterful ability to translate his vision into a political ideal, an aesthetical tendency and an administrative structure- the coherence of which resulted in the founding of Printed Matter.

Chang Yuchen is an artist based in New York. She works in an interdisciplinary manner -- writing as weaving, drawing as translation, clothing as portable theater, commerce as everyday revolution (see Use Value). By constantly entering and exiting each medium, she strolls against the category of things, the labor division among people. changyuchen.com/

I really like this video. The way it is made and Ms. Yuchen's insights. I enjoyed learning about Sol LeWitt. I hope that you will make more videos like this one.

I really enjoyed this video. Yuchen has such an eloquent and honey static voice it helped absorbed the information deeper than I would somewhere else. I've always felt connected to Sol Lewitt -- being born on the same day and in New England, love to see his works on display as much as I can. I didn't connect the aspect of writing out ideas as the art piece and other people produce it with only words as the canvas and example. Very very clever, thanks

You aré incredibly expressive with your hands, they support, and and embellish your ideas. I loved to see and hear your personal experience of this artist. It was a very enjoyable talk.

I enjoyed listening to Yuchen Chang speak of Sol LeWitt. It was nice to be re-introduced to his place in the history of Printed Matter. I have to say that the ambient sound was so lovely in this video that I have to ask, "What am I hearing?" I had to, many times, go back to listen to the words being said because each time I was so enveloped in the ambient sound of this room where she was speaking - especially beginning at 4:44 with the glorious crescendo/decrescendo (subway train?) and the sound bumps, indistinct speech, and bell-like sounds that happens later (5:40 & ca. 10:45 to the end). I wish someone would just place a recorder in this space for an hour.

@@yuchenchang9054 Wow! Thanks for that link. Actually, I have nearly all of Kubisch's work. On my website, I talk about the week in Austria spent with her and her Soundwalks. Much of my recent work also uses electromagnetic sound that's a hallmark of her work, so we've spoken at times and I'm familiar with her. I guess the subway train (?) is a different matter in the above video? Still, it sounds lovely and still needs a recording made. ;-)
