Episode 3 of Fireside Chats with Seth is about Solar Farms. Yes, we really get calls to go "listen to solar farms" and it sounds dumb when you say it out loud. Solar farms take in sun and make energy. They just sit there. They don't make noise! But... they do. Inverters, fans for cooling, even sometimes motors for angling the cells to follow sunlight can all make noise. And, the big question is - do we care? Is it loud enough to matter. And, again the answer is yes, it is. Now... there's some conspiracy theory stuff in here, too. What is that conspiracy? A rational analysis of some manufacturer behaviors tells us that they know their machines are noisy and they won't say how noisy they are. In fairness, their white papers indicate they know and are working on fixing their issues. We won't be naming that manufacturer here, by the way. The point is that seemingly inert things can and do make noise and their potential for interference with your home life or work life is real. We can and do measure these things. There are RU-vid videos to hear how loud industrial (1000’s of acres) scale solar inverters can be. The bigger concern is the farm ground they are consuming faster than urban development due to cost effectiveness. Farm ground offers fewer expenses allowing higher profits. Leases for solar pay more than farming. So, studies show the next crises as early as 2050. Food shortages. Mandate solar to be on unproductive soil or rooftops. I don’t understand how greed can keep putting us in the next crises. We must do better for our kids.

I've been trying to tell people about this. We have a solar farm surrounding us, it's an 80 mw facility and it has about 50 inverters. The nearest panels to us are around 800 feet from our house and this stupid thing buzzes ALL DAY LONG!! Nobody can tell me they don't make noise because I hear it every day. Before they built the thing they claimed it wouldn't make any noise they were WRONG!!!!!

Dosent this elictric wiz know his hair is on fire. Ever hear a gas well get fracked? Then a month later another well fracked on the other hill? Then have 6 sand trucks followed by 6 water trucks force you off the road till their convoy passes. I'll take a buzz anyday. High tention wires buzz two

Solar inverters and charge controllers can edmit rf noise in the area also and that can be really annoying to ham radio stations and sensitive electric devices just something to be aware of

The solar farm surrounding us besides buzzing all day long, also disrupts our TV, internet and phone signals. The buzzing has also run off all the forest animals on our property or the project has killed them I don't know which. I've also done research that shows that if you live within half a mile of a solar farm it will decrease the value of your property. I know what I see and hear living in the middle of this thing so I know what I'm talking about.

This is an idea I scream about but nobody hears. We have a twenty acre solar farm near us. Not very noisy, but not very productive either. Twenty acres generates about 5 megawatts when the sun is shining. Fifteen years ago, my wife and I rented a mobile home for a nursing contract my wife had. Almost in the shadow of Pennsylvania's Susquehanna Nuclear facility. Three hundred acres, 2.36 GIGAWATTS 24/7 almost 365. Nuclear is orders upon orders of magnitude more effective use of acres.

To be clear: SOLAR PANELS DO NOT MAKE NOISE! Caveat: if they are installed improperly, wind can cause some noise. The inverter(s) and transformer(s) do cause noise, but generally the site can be engineered to limit this noise (often by locating the noisy elements in the center of the installation.

Thanks for stating facts. Solar farms can be developed with foresight to produce clean, cheap energy at low decibels. I live seven miles from town and hear vehicles, wind, dogs, wild animals and other ambient noise, point is you have noise everywhere and generally Solar farms are placed away from populated neighborhoods. Maximum gain, minimal loss in my opinion.

All I can hear from the one up the road is the sheep clamoring for their dinner around 7:00 p.m.😂 they're supposed to keep the grass mowed down under the panels and they do a pretty good job but they must get a grain supplement around that time because they can be really noisy. I don't find it annoying though it just makes me miss our sheep since we no longer have a flock.

So now people freaks out about barely perceptible buzzing sounds yet those same people would be OK with the sounds of their refrigerator, music, dog, children, birds, cars, and even would comment on videos of electric racing cars "the future is dull and boring where is the engine sounds". Ive been to solar farms and in all seriousness never have heard anything out of the ordinary unless I was a few m from the inverters or substation and it wasn't bad at all, outside of that it was actually far more quiet than my house and possibly anyone's houses.

Well, if you live in a City - you know what to expect but your City also has noise ordinances. These people moved out to the country get away from all of that crap........but now they have to suffer? If it was a Natural Gas power plant it would be subject to noise regulations and probably wouldn't be permitted to be built!

Its easy to design a wall around the inverters to direct the sound skyward... Plus sound attenuation

WTF is this? I’ve been in the industry for about 15 years developing projects and working for manufacturers. Modules have zero sound. Most inverters are quite most of the time but some of them have fans that cool them from time to time. There are no fan options like Enphase, ginlong, solis, and Canadian Solar inverters. Transformers can make some noise but they are the same kind of transformers that you would see on a utility pole or in commercial parks. Typically not an issue as they only make noise when the sun is out.

When you're living next to a solar farm that has 50 inverters believe me you definitely hear noise. I have a solar farm surrounding me and it buzzes all day long, every day

I just moved into a rental basement space in a house that has solar. I hear a constant high pitch noise when it is quiet enough! Also the convertor is right outside my window making a fan sounds often. I'm moving out once my lease is up... in 10 months. I'm hoping the Oregon rainy season will stop the noise !
