This is the kind of practical, down-to-earth testing that makes me smile! Great proof of concept design! I plan on using a large scale system for my tiny house
@preparedchipmunk you could use a closed loop glycol system - it would run through the pipes outside and then into the tank, which would heat the water in the tank - bit more challenging and costly to do, but it works - a drain back system which would allow you to drain the water out when the sun is gone would work too...but risky...
You can definitely use Peltier's on a SHW system. You just need a couple plates of aluminum to pass the heated pipe through and a glycol/water fed cooler system. key is to get the 40-60 deg difference in temp to get best power.
Hey Rich really enjoy all of the mad scientist stuff you do I was wondering if you use brick inside the frame they have three holes in the brick could run water pipe through them or just air only and paint the brick black the mass of the brick will keep the temp from dropping so fast but the down side it will take longer to heat up, just a thought Have you ever used a tin can heater as a pre-heater for a solar water heating system linking the two would help the bricks heat faster
Hey rich Could it be that the heater with the bottles is loosing some temp at the bottom where the pvc pipes or resting on the ground? Its just a idea Love your videos Greetings from Belgium Erik

Hi Rich. I have been studying your videos for a long time now. I really appreciate your work! I had the same idea with the black pipes going through the plastic bottles for use a walls for a greenhouse. Anyways I have some ideas for you to try if you have time. Instead of having a radiator style heater, try running the pipes horizontal in a single back and forth pattern. The higher up it goes the water should get hotter. And try putting the reflective cans inside the plastic. Keep me posted!
There is 100 w per square foot. So how much heat. Did you gather? One btu is 1 pound of water(.125 gal) raised 1 degree. Also at what rate did you gather ie btus/hr. To convert to an amount of eqiv electrical power take btus hours/ 3415. Btus/ kw hrs is the equiv kilowatt hours used. You may now convert to thermal efficency btus stored/ ( 342 btus/ft2 x ft2) now compate to flat plate comercial collects 70-80%
You are genius and your ideas are priceless. There will come time when I am gong to use your technology. Thank you so much bro for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with us. zoran
Really liking the videos, made an air heater just to test, 60 degree C from a cardboard box with beer cans and a black plastic bag in the process of making a bigger one, have to drink lots of beer but willing to do that to save the planet. Just a thought but have you thought of coupling a Pelter Cell to the air heater to create power.
Thanks for sharing. Awesome. We lose our water once a month or more and the califone(water heater) won't work with gravity fed pressure. I think go in the direction of the one with the glaze.
Solutions for cold weather: Evacuated Solar Tubes. Also, build an insulated heat box big enough for your heat collector AND a 40-80 gallon hot water tank. Paint the tank black insulate the shit out of that box and you can use parabolic mirrors and even flat mirrors to really get some heat. You can make this box a combo furnace and water heater by having air run through it with a fan during the day and into your house. Turn furnace off and your box should stay hot over night. Shower in morning :)
Hey Rich I enjoy the videos and all the Mad Scientist stuff you try. Have you ever tried using bricks as thermal mass in the heater, they have three holes so you could run water pipes through them and after the bricks heat up of course paint the bricks black and you could use a tin can air heater as a preheater making the bricks heat even faster with brick mass the water should heat faster and temps drop less due to the thermal mass. I love the gutter tin can heater and the led windmills!
The ambient ground temperature is definitely going to dampen your results, especially in the winter. At higher elevations, like on a roof, you'll see a much more dramatic difference in output. BTW, wouldn't copper be more effective then PVC? We used to make these minus the bottles back in the 70s out of copper with a reflective back and they seemed fairly effect as a preheating source for hot water. Just my two cents worth. Nice work, btw. Cheers and Happy New Years to all.
А площадь обогрева вы не учитываете? Длина труб разная, объем воды в системе тоже разный! Сравнивать две этих системы не корректно. И вообще хорошо бы вакуум в бутылках создать чтобы снизить Броуновское движение.
Hey Rich, I've tried this with and unfortunately didn't work for me. May I ask: 1- is it a problem if the bottles are not totally hermetic to air as you put them one inside another? 2- can the system be in a zigzag to have the same water go through all the pipes and eventuelly be exposed longer to more heat? 3- Is there a way to write to you directly? ismadiaw Thank you for any further support, friend!
have you thought of using pex? It goes on sale every now and then. Could you solve the problem of freezing in cold climates and heat storage for me? lol
Certaine vidéo utilise tuyau de cuivre et canette d'aluminium mais il semble qu'ils ne vont pas bien ensemble, pourriez-vous le confirmez? Le plastique n'étant pas très bon conducteur, je reste hésitant.
I'm using your solar heating videos to try and design a solar water heater for my chicken waterer! I'm hoping I can come up with something that will work during the cold months here!
Hi! (If you have difficulty with the translation, TELL me!!!) Успехов тебе и удачи! (Success to you and good luck!)
man have you ever heard of something called winter. i don't think so it gets -10 F in Michigan in winter what can i o with this it will get me freezing water
great share on this There is a professional wind and solar green energy guide on *www.SolarDiy.org* for anyone looking for additional tips like this in saving energy for home.
Awesome video. I think I know why you're not getting a LOT more heat. It's the reflectivity of the aluminum can. I did an experiment with a parabolic mirror using aluminum foil tape and couldn't get hardly any heat ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pzZaN5DY8BA.html - I think the same thing is happening here. Aluminum from the inside of a can is not polished for reflectivity and doesn't act like a magnifying glass. You need to buy special highly reflective mirror tape - I believe using that around 1/2 the bottle will amplify the heat 3-4 times and you should get 50-60'C or more from this system instead of 25-30'C. I huge sheet of mirror tape is about $20-$30 so it's not a pricy fix - one she is probably enough for a large collector 3-4 times the size of the one you made here.
Hi I live in Brazil I know this system. You have built it incorrectly! You have forgotten to insert the matt black painted re-cycled milk cartons in to the bottle, Which significantly absorbs more heat Dohhhh Homer!!
TIMAVATAR hey dude, the 4directions guy is just being kind to let viewers know the system, after all the guy in the video said he got the idea from Brazil in the first place, so you don`t need to come in and be Mr.self righteous.Get back on yee horse and head south into the sunset....
criartoros obviously you were offended by what i said to say something like that? i was merely suggesting that perhaps rich allen has his personal take on the original system ya know, we need free thinkers to change previously set systems or else there would be no evolution. so please don't come to me saying i'm self righteous when i see everyone one as equal. Peace
Hey Everybody... As, wonderful and creative as, this is(which, is what I want to offer) BUT, by ALL means "DO NOT use old plastic bottles(as, they show) because, PLASTIC(anything) is TOXIC to the food put inside!" Hard plastic... "is better" but, glass or, ceramic is COMPLETELY, Non-TOXIC! This is how I wish to share this in, "Survivors-2-Success" Creative and Non-profit, Co-op.
