I was raised 20 miles from Fátima and it always made me wonder why there were so many people, including several journalists and photographers and still no picture, no report of a miracle. Everything was established after the supposed event. Today, there's a gigantic sanctuary, a big money maker for the church. This is the real reason why Fátima is a thing.

That's literally what it is. It's called photo bleaching of the retina. Stare at a light source long enough, and an inverted imprint of the light source will stay in your vision, so that the object goes wherever you look. You can do it at home. Stare at a light bulb filament for a minute and look away. You'll see the filament "dance around" wherever you look.

One of my favorite quotes from any movie is from Men in Black. Will Smith's character claims that "People are smart" Tommy Lee Jones character says "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals, and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow." Forgetting the bit about the aliens, this hit me hard as a kid. A group of people can be convinced of anything. The more people you get in on hysteria, the faster it grows.

The claim that ancient people all thought the earth was flat is incorrect. Some thought it was flat without a doubt, but many also knew it was in fact round. It doesn't take a genius to figure it out when you watch ships become obscured by the horizon from the bottom up. Many ancient structures demonstrate very sophisticated math as well, so they can easily calculate the geometry of the planet the same way Arotostenes did in ancient greece.

As a child, i remember occasionally looking directly at the sun(Disclaimer, don't do that, it's harmful to your eyes). I remember vividly that every time i did it, the sun burned a spotlight into the part of the vision it was in. When i looked around the rest of the sky, trying to catch that spot, the sun would leave more of a trail, almost appearing as if it was dancing. This whole experience just sounds like people staring at the sun and messing up their eyes to me.

I was simply into researching everything around me, no magic thinking. It's shocking to me that some people would view this little phenomenon as "a god's miracle"!

In the case of your friend Bob, your parents may have dismissed his existence because he was not physically present or visible to them. However, when it comes to religious beliefs, such as the existence of Jesus, faith plays a significant role in accepting the existence of a higher power or spiritual being that is not physically visible. I was born and raised in Spain, a traditionally catholic country (but not anymore). I am very familiar with all the so called ‘miracles’ such as those at Fátima and Lourdes. They are nothing but the wishful thinking and expectations of a bunch of illiterate, gullible, über religious, fanatical, backward and/or desperate people willing to see something, anything. It would only take a handful of them saying they saw something for the rest to follow and say they did, too. They would not want to appear less religious or fortunate than the ‘witnesses’. It must also be said that these two sites soon became very profitable for the Church from the first moment and they are strong touristic attractions even in our days, although NONE of the supposedly miraculous cures have been proven. Update: I was watching a video called ‘The unhingering of Unsolved Mysteries’ by Alicia Quinn. At 42:11 she talks about the segment in which people affirmed seeing angels and the Sun doing strange things after looking at it for several minutes. Duh!

The experiment involved a straight pole/post that was anchored under the water on a pivot and when someone off to the side pulled on a rope that ran under the water to the pole it stood up out of the water. The people who were asked to watch the experiment all reported seeing a straight pole. However, there were some people nearby who had not been told about the experiment and were not originally part of the test. My great grandmother was born and raised in Caniçal, a small place near Fátima, back in the XIX century. She was a pious woman and in her mid twenties when the so called miracle occurred and the three pastors claimed to have seen the virgin. To cut a long story short, moved by her "faith" she went down there to "Cova da Iria" on October 13th, 1917. There she saw the huge crow looking at the sky, pointing to the Sun and shouting "Miracle", "Miracle", and to her big disappointment, she saw nothing! Nothing at all! She lived to 100 and one thing she used to do, was to call me in a whisper, in her birthday or in Christmas Eve, while she was sitting in the living room, and ask me if I was a believer. I had my high school graduation in Salesianos do Estoril, and she was kind of relieved every time I told her that I was not a believer and did not believe there was a god. She always said: You're right! And smile to herself... She completed the advice with "But mostly, you must never believe in Fátima because it's all a fake! It's a money making machine."

I sat in a side room with a view of the stage with my cousin. I sniggered the first time someone did a quick take to make sure the people behind were close enough to catch him before falling back. Then my aunt went up. She's always been the greedy, selfish, adulterous, vain, lying, deceptive, divisive, drug abuser that would steal from you and then help you look for the thing knowing it was in her purse. One of the WORST people I've ever known. Drug abuse permafried her brain and she's full schizophrenic now. I think anyone who doesn't grow up with "healing services" will be half-deconstructed after simply attending one. This kind of service is not a Christian universal. Many have never been to one. Even at its best, without the kinds of things you mention, these kinds of services are clearly the Church of the Holy Quid Pro Quo where one has faith and expects A Miracle Cure from whatever real aliments they have. A faith so obviously transactional ("cure me and I will believe") ought to disturb any Christian whose faith is not based on such an obviously self-interested protocol.

Sounds like a cult to me and not true Christians at all. Look... the majority of true born again Christians just live their daily lives with God in it, they preach the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:1-4) to spread the word so that people can get saved if they choose to and pretty much that is it. I know this because that is how I live my life as a true born again Christian, I don't even go to church because I am an introverted personally and large groups of people make me uncomfortable, so I do my best to avoid people most of the time and watch bible study videos online as my church instead, of course I'm not against going to church it's just not something that is for me. But the church that I used to go to before I decided to leave due to how I was feeling due to my introvert personality issues did not behave in the manner that you described because my former church was not a cult.

Hang on a second. So the "miracle" is that people stare at the sun for a while, then it begins to change color, dances across the sky, and appears closer than other things they looked at? THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU STARE AT THE SUN, OR ANY OTHER BRIGHT LIGHT! The cells in the retina over-saturate and so the apparent color will change. And then that persists on that portion of the retina - so as your eyes move, it moves, even if you dont realize you are moving your eyes. And then when you look at anything else, that 'object' appears closer because it is superimposed over whatever else you are looking at. You'll see it even if you close your eyes. You can have this same miracle today, just by telling people to stare at the sun for a while, as long as they don't know how the eyes react to doing that.

Mass delusion, it's the only explanation. A bunch of religious types gathered to see a miracle and stare at the sun. All it would take is one person who either thought they saw some movement or someone who wanted to be the first to 'see' something. Then others would sure to follow, thinking they see some kind of movement where there is none. And yes those kinds of delusions do happen we have literally confirmed them via a whole sortment of different tests. But even if we are overly generous and say that they actually saw something, it can still be nothing but a mass delusion. We have one sun, for the entire planet. If such an event actually took place it would be seen by half the world and not limited to around one church. If the sun were dancing around in the sky everyone would see it, yes everyone as the sun is what causes the shadows and they would be dancing around too. One might miss the sun moving around as they likely wouldn't be staring at the sun but they won't miss the shadows moving around. So the best that these people can argue is that god caused a mass delusion. Even if we grant that all 70,000 people saw something.

A couple of thoughts - First, reading up on the 3 children, they sound as if they were seriously disturbed well before their first vision. They were frequently punishing themselves in "penance" by doing things such as denying themselves water for days at a time, or only drinking dirty water from the laundry. I don't know what kind of psychological phenomenon that is but I'm sure it's serious and NOT representative of some kind of saintly attitude. I also wonder what effect dirty water might have had on their health, and whether it may have affected their perception, perhaps have even led to hallucinations. Second, 1917 was the height of WW1. 1910 saw the overthrow of the monarchy and by 1926 a military dictatorship was in place. During those 16 years Portugal faced constant political turmoil, economic struggle and entered WW1 against the will of a majority of the people. 1917-18 saw a 2 year dictatorship under Sidonio Pais, who leaned towards a fascist approach, seriously cracked down on unions, and allied himself with the Catholic Church. During periods of turmoil like this I believe it is more common for "group think" to take hold, especially when it expresses a powerful political/social concern of the moment. In this case it was a revival of "traditional values" of the Catholic Church. This sort of phenomenon is not unusual. For example the rise of sightings of UFOs in the 1950s USA is tied to the fear associated with the Cold War, as well as anxiety about fast technological change. So we see 2 strands coming together, 3 children who were apparently psychologically disturbed, becoming the conduit for the expression of a culture/society that yearned for the security provided by its Catholic past. We will never know, but I can't help wondering what kind of suggestions were planted in the minds of these weak children by the adults around them, their families, their priests... Simple comments from these people, for example telling them about the lives of the saints (common subject of religious conversation) may have planted the seeds in their minds, the idea that they could have visions, the kinds of things they might see and hear. The children then give expression to this in the form of hallucinations. And this affirms to the community their hopes.

Aron! I love your videos. But may i share one of the pet-peeves of mine with you (that you are doing): When talking about the Sun, the Earth, etc.. about any spherical object, it is essential to say which parameter your are comparing when saying that something is "400 times larger". In here you were comparing the Sun and and Moon, and you meant to say that it is the radius (or the diameter) that is being compared. Because if one sphere has the radius 400 times larger than the radius of another sphere, then it is much more than 400 times larger, because it's a 3D object and the volume will grow by the cube of the radius. Sorry for being pedantic.
@Enricolt89

I love when people are being pedantic especially on educational vids like Aron's. Oh, this miracle. I saw a program about it in TV. In it they claimed that people saw the Sun spinning. As a kid, I thought "What would that look like? The Sun is really bright, you can barely look at it. How could you tell if it was spinning? If the Sun was actually spinning, it would look exactly the same."

I haven't ever seen ball lightning. My grandmother told me about a family member, I think my great aunt or something, that had. The story she told me was that this family member was visiting my grandparents and there was a lightning storm starting up. As soon as lightning struck she kinda freaked out and went running through the house making sure all the doors and windows where closed and locked. She was worried about electronics and wanted to stay away from the outer walls. She said it was because she didn't want ball lightning to get in. Because like you were talking about this "sun" going down through the trees she thought it could get into the house. Even though I haven't seen ball lightning myself and it seems to be a really rare event. It seems way more believable to me than god did it though.

In the tv-series Pillars of the Earth one of the main characters works in France and comes across a block of limestone that starts releasing water when the temperature rises (like, around sunrise, when rays of the sun hit it directly). So back in England, working on the cathedral started by his adoptive father Tom the Builder, he carves a statue of the virgin Mary and hides the limestone behind her eyes, and places it so at dawn the sun hits the 'weeping stone' and the statue starts crying. Of course pelgrims flock to this miracle and the cathedral quickly becomes a popular site. it's only a miracle / magic as long as you don't know how it works.

32 minutes into the video. An Italian elderly lady is interviewed. The interviewer says: "Have you seen the miracle of the sun?" The lady answers: "Not really, this is not the miracle of the sun, that was in Fatima, when the sun got closer to all the people, and I have experienced it even here".

The thing is that the Sun does move in the sky because the Earth is rotating, and if you watch for it, you can notice it. Especially at Sunrise or Sun set. It goes through 360 degrees in 24 hours, which is 15 degrees per hour or 15/60=0.25 degrees per minute.

@@jasonuren3479 The sun rises in the east, and sets in the west. The Earth turns once over 24 hours, so the sun rises, moves to overhead at noon, and sets in the west. If you watch the sun rise in the morning you can see its apparent motion due to the earths rotation, especially as it rises behind a tree for reference.
@ianbeardsley9250
@ianbeardsley9250 Месяц назад
Since there are 360 degrees in a circle, and the Earth rotates once every 24 hours, the sun moves across the sky daily 360 degrees per 24 hours is 360/24 = 15 degrees per hour or 15degrees/60minutes=a quarter of a degree per minute. I think that is what they saw because they were told to watch for it. You only notice it if you really watch for it.

Yes, because the post office knows better than to believe in Santa. Too bad the church doesn't divert its money to answer prayers.
