Solar Panel Camping Setup - How to Install Solar Power Without Drilling

In this video I'm showing how to do Solar Panel Camping Setup on a truck, van, trailer, rv and so on without any drilling, using flexible solar panel, relatively cheap but good overland solar mppt controller and Eternabond rv leak repair tape.
I think this is ideal overland solar panels setup without much hustle. You could use for camping portable blankets or solar panel unfoldable cases but you have to store them somewhere and spend extra precious time to deploy or move.
This solution isn't as efficient as movable solar panel setup but this makes up for it saving time.
When deploying for camping, usually there are many things that need to be moved around. And often times to make this enjoyable you optimize your setup to the point where you can just park somewhere with minimal amount of setup.
This solar panel camping kit setup without drilling I think is the easiest and comfortable, as well to outside world they can't see that you have solar panels on the roof.

This is precisely the basic information a prospective mobile solar panel owner needs to know. I was marginally curious about solar panels before, but now I want one for a DIY project.

Cool glad video was of actual help. Of course this setup is not most solar efficent due to angle of panels vs sun but it is at least hustle free which is what i wanted instead of carring to reposition and such.

Don't forget the fuse rating is to protect your cables, not the charge controller. If your cables are rated at 15a then fit a 13a DC fuse. Take a length of your battery cable, put a 20a draw on it and see how warm they get... Better to be safe than sorry. Great vid by the way

Cool ride. I think you are a bit confused on the solar tech. Amorphous is the least efficient. Monocrystalline works best all around. Polycrystalline works best, but only in direct sunlight.

I went with old tech because I got a 250W panel for $85 Even if its half efficient each day so i only get 100w hour average, that is still cheaper than a 100w panel of any tech but on a good day I can definitely get at least up to 200w i am not knocking that newer tech will give me similar wattages with lower real estate space, but its expensive and I need to save all the money I can right now. That is more valuable than space for now. Next year I can do more.

I like this tried using link for solar panel but doesn't seem to exist anymore I'm just looking for something to keep a charge running to my crank battery was thinking about a hood mounted panel like what cascadia 4x4 has but to expensive nothing for GM and I think would prefer on roof. I'll look through your other videos see if maybe you've updated on this but if I can't find anything or if anyone else has any recommendations on panels etc it'd be really appreciated I'm looking at putting a Android head unit in the car and I know it will draw some power and I'm pretty sure it'll be enough to run the battery dead cuz I don't drive the truck daily but also I just like the idea of having the panel to provide charge to the batteries that I don't have to worry about sitting without the engine running listening to radio or having other accessories on like for instance charging my phone or something

@deepblueride
@deepblueride 5 лет назад
Thats exactly that I'm planning to do on my car. One question though - I heard (I'm just getting into that whole solar thing, so pardon my ignorance) that panel efficiency drops as it heats up. Since it's mounted directly on the roof, is that causing any issues ?
@Gear_Into_Adventure
@Gear_Into_Adventure 5 лет назад
I heard it too. I'm not solar pro at all. This setup is something I picked up watching RV guys and really liked the relatively hastle free install and no holes or racks. Free months ago I cut several holes in the tape to have air come through ASI noticed in very hot sun I wasn't getting 10amps. Not that I really need 10amps as even 3 amps during the day tops up everything I need including battery. I think I'm suffering overheat. If I had bigger energy need and full 10amp from 2 100watts then right now I would remove tape. Put some kind of soft padding at the corners to raise panels up, tape again and cut the holes in tape like I currently have. I think this would take care of ventilation in the same way as if panels would be sitting on some roof rack rails. But because I'm fine with lower amps my setup still fits me fine. The dual Pannell and more juice was intended for winter months to maximize in snow. In summer time I have even with overheat enough amps to keep me running all day and night. Hope it helps
@MikoMuru
@MikoMuru 5 лет назад
Yes you will get less amps (electrons/second). You can always make a one inch gap on the bottom for better airflow or toss water on the panel to increase efficiency.. Heat is inn-efficiency, same thing goes with car engines.
@deepblueride
@deepblueride 5 лет назад
Ok, i installed whole system and it works beautifully ! I did some research on temperature coefficiency. According to www.tindosolar.com.au/learn-more/temperature-coefficient/, you lose 0.3-0.5% every degree above 25C. So if your panel heats up to 50, you loose 7-13%. I can get ~6A from my 100W panel (in California) so it would bring it down to ~5.0. So imho pretty negligible for small setups. I’m not going to build full solar rack on top of my car, to get that 1A back, especially as rack would increase wind noise. Thanks for tips!

Well ive had setup for 2 years now and it does the job i need it for. Sure not as efficent as it would be in arizona but keeps my fridge running and all things charged, even so in high elevation winter days. Though on super rainy winter days in low lands its jist enough for fridge

Sure i've been with this setup for like 4-5 years now. Well i added 3rd panel now. Of course its much reduced in winter and in full clouds to dont get much but better than nothing and still most of times dont need to run truck in winter to charge

I thought he was going to talk all the way through the whole damn video and then he don't even show any difference on the charge controller meter what the second panel added to it

Oh oh. Normal summer days i get eady 6-7amps and thats 4 years later. Avarages 3-4amps throughout summer and around it. Winter time clouds about 1amp. Overall sustainable for all needs

Thanks so much for the information 👍🏻👍🏻I have a similar setup on my rig you answered my question about expanding my system I really like the RV tape idea do you think that tape will stick to the top of my Harley trailer? Also with the solar control you answered about a 20 amp thanks check out my truck/rig at my RU-vid channel, at camping russ great information I will subscribe 😎😎

As long as rv tape has enough cover over area to stick its ok.
