The amps and volts of a solar panel array can be affected by how the individual solar panels are wired together. This video is going to teach you how the wiring of a solar panel array affects it's voltage and amperage. The key takeaway to know is that 'Solar Panels in Series Adds their volts together' and 'Solar Panels wired in Parallel adds their amps together.'

The only confusing thing about all of this is which one is best to charge your batteries? When living in the van, you’re using amps, and concerned with how many AH your bank has. Do you want to push the most amps into the battery, or the most volts into the battery? Nobody bothers to tell you which is actually preferred or which will charge your batteries to full faster. Could you please cover this?!
@Thunderst0rn
@Thunderst0rn 8 месяцев назад
Howmuch power is pushed in the battery does not depend on the series or parallel configuration. Higher voltage (more in series) means lower Amps for fhe same total power, thus smaller gauge wires, but more expensive charge controllers as he explains. You can calculate the amount of current into the battery by the power of the solar array (as you saw in this video all configurations with 4 panels had 400W) by rhe nominal battery voltage. Cheers!
@enki2gold
@enki2gold 6 месяцев назад
With series and mppt combo you get the max output of your panels with the added benefit of smaller wires. Higher voltage systems give you more of a return on investment. In my opinion.

@matthewjswider You want more Amps for charging! You only want your volts to be slightly higher than the battery you’re charging! If you have a 12v battery, you want a max of 13-14volts and between 3-40amps for charging, 3amp is slow charge, 10 amps is fast charge, and 40amps is rapid charge. Since most solar panels produce between 12-24volts, the charge controller sorts out the power differences and turns it into 13-14volts for charging. The closer you can get your solar panels to naturally putting out 14v and 10amps the less work your charge controller has to do and more efficient your system is

If you have 2 separate arrays going to 2 separate charge controllers both charging the same battery bank, they can indeed be wired differently if the array design calls for it.

Wonderful explanation. I have a question which I think you already answered but I just wanted to verify. My Victron MPPT 100/50 controller sometimes turns OFF, stating Insufficient PV Power, and that PV must be at least 5V above battery power (12V LiFePo 3 battery bank). Today battery voltage was 13.8V and VOC was ~17V. I'm in Utah in the summer and this happens sometimes for 2 days at a time in sunny weather. My two 220W NewPowa solar panels are wired in parallel, with a VOC of ~20V. It seems like I may need to rearrange the wiring to connect the panels in Series, raising my VOC to ~40V. Does that sound correct? Personal note: I find it amazing that you actually put in the effort to answer all of our questions and I find some of your answers hilarious. Keep it up, please!

Hi Nate, After reviewing many of your great videos, it just doesn’t look like there is a “great” alternative for our 75% of-the-time cloud shading, on the coast in Alaska. Tried to subscribe to your private group, but it was not currently available, so I am hoping that you will be able to make the time to respond to my question. Option #1, Hybrid Parallel: (Four total, 120w panels, 6.79a, 17.68v each panel) 2 separate, 2-panel systems, each parallel = 17.54a, 17.68v each system (BUT inadequate voltage for 12v battery power storage minimum and mppt efficiency). Option #2, Series: Single, Four total, 120w panels = 6.79a, 70.72v (BUT “series” reduces all panels to lowest during “75% of-the-time” cloud shading). Option #3, Hybrid, Series-Parallel: Four total, 120w panels = 13.58a, 35.36v. (BUT 35.36v is probably still inadequate for 12v battery storage and mppt efficiency, considering “75% of-the-time” cloud shading). Leaning towards "series", but what am I missing? I can't say enough about all the great help you provide! Thanks again. Dave M.

I was hoping he answered your question, as you are over panelling the controller. I think your problem would be if you had short circuit amps (Isc) to the controller. Reading through victron forums it seems the most important thing is that open circuit voltage allowing for temperature coefficient does not exceed controller input. In your example you would have 640W of power, but your controller would still limit 20amp max output. So your controller out putting to a 12V battery could only use 240W. But having that extra power would help give you more amps out on poor solar days, when it's cloudy low light conditions. Wish he had of answered your question.

Thanks for this great video and giving back to the community! If u dont mind, i need some advice on my config. I have a goal zero yeti 6000x that can take an input of 600w 14-50v 50A MC4. I have 4 sharp solar panels at Pmax 140w, Poc 24.85, Isc 7.81. I was thinking of doing a series parallel that shud get be to 560w, 50v, 15A. Use a power joiner and 10 gauge wire to my yeti. Is that sound?

This is a question of charging efficiency, not cost-efficiency. The goal is to gather as much sun as possible through out the day on a small system where roof space is very limited. The system will have only 240 watts of panels. Since the Victron MPPT's state, they don't activate until the solar panels are providing 5v over the battery voltage, more panels in series will get to that voltage quicker. The question is, how much do you really gain? One setup is using the 100/20 with four 60 watt panels and the other uses six 40 watt panels with the 150/35. How much more efficenct would the six-panel system gather over the four-panel system? (maybe this is a video idea????)

So my array is 16 250 watt panels, 4 strings in parallel. The current @ pmax is 8.27. The volts @ pmax is 30.3. Open circuit volts are 37.6. Not sure which volts to figure but i guessed the 30.3. Im coming up with 121 volts and 33 amps. Is that correct? Then im shopping for a charge controller and they all say 12v 24v 48v etc. What size charge controller do i need? And inverter as well? Its not too confusing but im brand new to this and i cant afford to screw it up. Thanks

Good vids. I had an issue with my controller showing 0.5-1.5A Individually tested 4x120w 12v panels each giving 4-5A. Reconnecting cables and y cables in parallel whilst testing and was getting up to 12A (due to sunlight changes) But when connected to controller it showed 0.5-1.5amp Found draining power from the batteries caused the the panels to draw more current going up to 9.5A and today even to 16.5A So be aware if your batteries are fully charged they will trickle charge and draw less power.. But by connecting power tools, diesel etc to drain the battery it caused the panels to draw more current Hope this helps

I haven't seen a Solar set up using a Yeti Goal Zero with decent solar panels other than what Goal Zero provides. Could you do a video showing how to maximize the availability for a Goal Zero Yeti 1000x battery? Currently I have found that the unit has a built in charge controller that can handle 50V, 50amps, and up to 600watts of power. Any chance you could show the best set up for that?

I just installed 9500 GPH sump pump for a fountain in my 1/2-acre pond. I have 2 100Watt 12V solar panels with 30amp controller and 600-watt inverter and 3 lithium batteries 12V 20aH. Unfortunately, I'm only getting 8-10 minutes per hour of run time before the alarm goes off and shuts down. Do I need to add more panels to accommodate or add more batteries or both? Should i go with 12V 100aH lithium batteries over the 20aH that I have or add 2 more 20Ah. Which is best for panels and batteries series or parallel?

Hi Nate, (dumb question coming) I'm looking at a lithium battery's, and they have a minimum 40amp and max 70 amp charge..... So..... For these batteries to be charged up at the 40amps, my entire solar array would need to produce a minimum of 40 amps.... Correct? This is going to determine how I complete my entire solar array wiring. Thanks much!

I guess I'm confused on how to read an MPPT controller in the first place. Some aren't as straight forward. I have a Growatt 48v 5000w inverter in mind that says "PV Array MPPT Voltage Range - 120Vdc~430Vdc". Does that mean the solar voltage should be between those two numbers for optimal usage?

When you lock at victrons specifications for smartsolar 100/20 mttp regulator it says nominal pv power at 12v, 290watts. What does that mean? I should get 2000watts of solararrays before I max out the regulator if calculating with your metod (best case senario, 100v at 20a?). But victrons mttp calculator goes from 100/20 to 100/30 when i add two 115w in serien time two in parrallel. My count it should only be 40v x 16a? So should still work with the 100/20 right?

I get that you receive 120V/5A or 60V/10A depending on the setup... but the battery still receives 14V, yeah? So, the amps would be the same whether you do it one way or the other? But you save money on a cheaper MPPT, smaller gauge wires etc? Have I understood it right? :)

Hi mate, I just discover you. So, I ignore if you've already done about this : What about the theory saying that you take the number of watts of your panel and divide it by the voltage of your system to get the max amp that your charge controller can support? Means : 195 w ÷ 12 v : 16.25 amp. So if I have 6 panels, I need a charge controller with at least 97.5 amp capacity? Is it a true or false leading? Thanks a lot!

The MPPT says 100|50, what is the 50? And is that the AMPs from the Solar Panel or the Amps going to the Battery? Here is some more in the way of example: Say have 250W panel at 50V and 5A. Now if I go to a 12V battery, the Amps going to battery is about 21 Amps. But if have 24V battery, than you have about 10.5 Amps. So when sizing and looking at the Amp rating of charge controller, do you need to take into account battery voltage or do you just size the amps from the panel?

So series keeps the amperage low so you can use smaller cables but increases the voltage so you need a bigger charge controller. Wiring in parallel increases the amperage so you may need bigger cables, but keeps the voltage lower so you don't need a bigger controller. In my setup, i'm working with 4 215w panels which i'm going to wire in 2 groups of 2 panels. That'll mean i could go with the 150/35 VE MPPT controller and not have to jump up to the 250. Now to figure out what size wiring i'm going to need..

Should I just hook them up Series Parallel and never give the charge control a real workout? How would you do it? I refer them to your YT channel but I’ve complaints that it’s hard to find the series and I’m at a loss to guide them. Maybe a Beginner Guide to Solar in the Playlist. What if you have 5 100w panels? ( I now see you can probably use 150/45 mppt for seies connection) I assume you have to put them in series, so you meet the victron 5v+ battery voltage threshold to start the mppt charger. You have at that point with 5 panels in series, near the 100v limit on the 100 / 50 mppt. So - do you need to move to the 150 /50 mppt victron model? Also victron electrical engineer says to wire in series to collect morning sun or shade sun because of the 5v+ battery voltage startup rule. But other people say series will not work well if one panel is in shade. But they say the parallel wiring does not have the one panel in shade problem. Using 5 Rich Solar panels.
