In this video I am experimenting with what is called a sand battery. Basically, a sand heat sink. I had wanted to make one with water, but water has limitations so after learning that sand is a good option that is what I am using in this video. I hope to build a larger one soon. Thank you for watching.

The heated sand will retain its heat for longer period of time if kept in an insulated container. Good luck

This was my first attempt at the sand thermal heat battery. I am continuously upgrading the concept. I do believe I will be able to heat my home with this concept. I am building larger and more powerful ones as I work out the detsils.

Wish I would have caught this series at the beginning and not 11 months later. All you needed was to find an old electric stove that the bottom element was good in. Screw the door shut, fill it with sand from the vent on top, and hook your solar up the exact same way.

Hey Mike, that BBC article was Finland, not NZ. I’m in NZ and making one based on your experiment, though.

Yes I realized I had made a mistake on that but just went ahead and left it up anyway. I hope you have success with your project.

Hello Mike, i think you could just using magnify mirrors reflector method (with solar tracking with an offset adjustment) and reflect to the sand box , like this you will increase the heat and store much more calories, the idea would be to heat the sand just under the melting point (1700°C) as optimized storage

you need a 48 volt induction circuit with a copper coil on an iron tank, i think it is by far the most efficient way and a minimum of 20cm isolation on every side of the sand battery box. good luck!

That is good information and I will research it. These experiments are small prototypes using some readily available hardware from a local hardware store. Thank you for the comment.

Hi Mike I love your setup for the sand battery. I would like to build one also. Thinking a couple 200 watt solar panels with some 12 volt heating elements. In a 50 gallon outside and a 40 inside holding the sand..hooked direct to the solar panels. From there some copper plate acting like a heat sink from inside sand to airspace. A thermal heated electrical fan sitting on top of one 2x10 in copper sheets bent at a 90 degree angle close to an incorporated into my old plenum. From that a thermostat controlling the solar sand temp to provide a steady heat soarse. I'm not sure this made any sense to you but you help would be welcome.

Hi mr mike, thank you for your effort, i'm from morocco, and i want to repeat the same experimentation but i find that solar panels are expensive here. For example a 17 watt panel costs 45 dollars. Almost 2,6 dollars for one watt. Is it the same price there ?

No I can find solar panels for roughly 50 cents a watt. That is expensive butt I used to pay $4-$6 a watt years ago. They are cheap on ebay in Las Vegas but shipping would be the issue.
