Had this idea 20 years ago my design was different in that it was a vacuum insulated pressure vessel with quartz sight glass and a carbon rod in the pressure tank there is a recessed cone shaped void in the carbon rod so that you would be hitting the center of the rod not just the surface and you can gravity feed the water to maintain your back pressure with a check valve. Furthermore don't forget the importance of mirrors you could drill a hole in the center of your dish and instead of having your pressure vessel in front of the dish it is behind the dish using parabolic mirrors

The problem with that steam engine is it has a two-way valve so the forces balance or cancel each other until a major difference in pressure. You need to put a one way valve system on it so air can only flow in one direction

Your steam is cooling before it hits the engine. Also might help to bring the cylinder and piston up to temperature so the steam stays steam as it passes through.
@zetacon4
@zetacon4 6 лет назад
Dude, all you really need is to talk with a knowledgeable thermal engineer and many of your bad guesses will no longer be necessary. You figured out the thermal coefficient of aluminum and water. Why did you stop there? The pressure/thermal properties of many materials are freely available online. Start there and find appropriate materials for your parts. By the way, when steam leaves your primary heating chamber (receiver), you must be sure to insulate your line all the way to your steam engine intake. A great deal of energy is lost by cooling if you fail to do this. Second, ditch that reciprocating leaky mess and go straight to a very efficient Tesla turbine. You won't regret it. You will need a small pressure tank between the receiver and the turbine to allow for pressure smoothing and volume adjustments. Remember, each stage of your system must be checked for energy losses. This goes all the way to your generator!. You can botch up the whole project by loosing a little here and a little there. Using steam can be a very interesting and enjoyable energy transfer medium. But, the main drawback is being diligent to reduce ALL losses in the whole system. If you choose to continue using glass, be absolutely sure you are using pyrex high temperature glass, like the type used in baking. NO more low-temp untempered crap. Steel works very well. Just blacken a small patch with soot from a flame to accept your solar energy . Keep it very thin. Use rock wool as the insulating blanket around your steel receiver. Use copper tubing from the steel receiver all the way to your Tesla turbine jet injector. Insulate this tubing with rock wool covered in aluminum foil. Remember to thermally insulate the part that holds your receiver or it will bleed off a huge amount of energy right at the receiver! Best to hold it with two hose clamps outside the insulation blanket. Do the same with the copper tubing going to the turbine. Follow this advice and you will have half of a good electric generating system. The other half is the generator and regulator and beyond.

@@CountryBoyMakinNoise Well caleb the design is more or less for day time consumption. Most of your household electronics (depending on what they are consumption wise) don't always have the need to be on, either you'll be at work or at some other location at a certain time, leaving your items around the house to be in an idle charge, the kinetic energy created by your generator unit(s) provide a collective source of energy that should be stored in a battery terminal that will more than likely provide in home reserve for events like black out or constant use with some sell back to the city power system if you really wanted.

You have much money to spend for experiments but I don't have, even I am not much wealthy and rich in money but let me tell you one thing surprising here, I never seen any steam engine in my life but one day I decided to make one steam engine and I had asked to my friends about that but 100% people laugh on me but I said I will do that and I will complete it with my own knowledge and within three days I will complete my project. There was many expert mechanics around my shop and they had laugh on me but I had start work on my steam engine and the third day I invited all those mechanics to watch my engine running and then they was surprised and I had seen their face was smiling but they was ashamed on their attitudes that they was laughing but I prove them my spiritual skill. That was an antique design in steam engines still I have in my junk store.

Eric Kim 🔴 What Is Islam? ⚠️ 🔴 Islam is not just another religion. 🔵 It is the same message preached by Moses, Jesus and Abraham. 🔴 Islam literally means ‘submission to God’ and it teaches us to have a direct relationship with God. 🔵 It reminds us that since God created us, no one should be worshipped except God alone. 🔴 It also teaches that God is nothing like a human being or like anything that we can imagine. 🌍 The concept of God is summarized in the Quran as: 📖 { “Say, He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He does not give birth, nor was He born, and there is nothing like Him.”} (Quran 112:1-4)[4] 📚 🔴 Becoming a Muslim is not turning your back to Jesus. 🔵 Rather it’s going back to the original teachings of Jesus and obeying him.

Cover the tank with clay cob made with that rock wool and char it up so it's black. It will boost your thermal capabilities a bit. You don't need to follow the sun if you use more than one reflector, 3 old satellite dishes will work, just get them to shine. Thanks for posting, keep up the experimental research.

I been planning something like this for a WHILE!! I was thinking focous about 4-6 dish, on about 1cubic foot box, with internal fins, to allow more surface area. I want to spin a small turbine, if I could generate 10-20 amps it would be great! For my 24v system, I want to use radiators inside, to heat my house, (somewhat!) And condense the steam i may use a wood stove to help this along! But 500-600 watts when there is NO sun would be awesome! Maybe have a multiple stage , compound system, where water is slowly pumped and heated in about 300-400cc chambers, in front of a dish, maybe a Fresnel lense on the opposite side, all tracking, surely by the end it will just be super heating the steam! And I just about bet money, a brass, or copper box would work much better, I tried all kinds of matereals with my soldering iron, the copper tip was the only one that worked! The aluminum cooled so fast it was useless!! Maybe you can find a large plumbing fitting, like a 2" tee, and some plugs, and drill and tap for smaller fittings, just thinking, my iron got hot enough the copper glowed in dim light, but wouldn't melt solder, with anything else, thermal dynamics, will always win!!

Great idea in general, but you are doing it the hard way. I have a circular tracking concentrating mirror, which weighs, including the boiler filled with water, less than 3 lb and concentrates 12 running feet by 8 in of sunlight down to a line. On a clear day, it makes more steam then I can use. I run the steam through a turbine and a reduction transmission, then to a generator, which makes enough electricity to run my air conditioner for free in the summer on clear days.

@TheDIYScienceGuy
@TheDIYScienceGuy 4 года назад
Yes but in an oven it's because of thermal stress, not pressure. Still not very safe to use a glass bottle as a pressure vessel. 🤓 (if you don't want the bottles to explode while heating it up in an oven, you need to put the bottle in the oven while the oven is still cold and than turn it on and let the temperature slowly rise)
@esyralessyrelia4133
@esyralessyrelia4133 4 года назад
@@TheDIYScienceGuy Yes you are right, I didn't really think about the pressure since the bottle did seem strong enough for a not completely closed system from which I didn't really expect that high of a pressure. and I thought you referenced to the large temperature difference at the focal point(and the thickness of the glass). but a bottle exploding from pressure would most likely indeed do more damage.

It is easy to make some steam, even with solar heat. It is more complicated to make steam at sufficient power and volume to do work. To do that, you need some more components. First, the boiler should be constructed to withstand at least several bars of pressure. You need to proof test the boiler at twice the design pressure, at a minimum. You also need safeties, or pressure relief valves. They pop off at a set pressure to prevent dangerous overpressure of the boiler. You need a feed tank and feed pump. The feed pump must be able to pump a modest amount of feedwater to the boiler at the boiler's operating pressure.Then you need a recirc pump, which does not need to be able to pump against the boiler's pressure. Because this is not a typical watertube boiler fired with liquid petroleum fuel, maybe you can get by with no recirc pump, I don't know. So the boiler gets feedwater, converts it to steam. Steam needs to get to the engine, whether steam turbine or steam piston engine. There, the expanding steam can do work, and there it loses much of its heat. This is why steam under significant pressure and temperature at a significant volume are needed. After passing through the engine, the dead steam passes through a condenser. The condenser is a heat exchanger and some of this heat can be used for preheating feedwater or in the case of a conventionally fired system, heat the fuel oil. The drop in temperature pulls a slight vacuum, increasing flow through the engine and work performed. The condensate is then moved by a condensate pump to the feed tank. This is a closed system but inevitably there will be leaks. If care in maintaining water chemistry is not exercised, chloride levels can rise to unacceptable levels. Along the way there are other parisitic loads such as lube oil circulation pumps, lube oil purifiers and fuel oil purifiers which of course you do not need, and utility or hotel steam for running auxillary equipment. Even with all of these additional loads, efficiency is increased by increased pressure and volume of steam through optimization of the cycle. I almost forgot. You need either some way to maintain boiler water level in a set range so the boiler does not run dry but also water does not excape into the steam header, or else a steam separator of some sort to send the steam oward but return boiler water to the boiler.You do not want water in the steam outlet.
