Solar Tower Testing for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency

In April 2017, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and Sandia National Laboratories demonstrated how large materials respond at extreme heat flux conditions at the National Solar Thermal Test Facility (NSTTF).
Project leads Alexander Brown and Jeff Engerer used samples approximately 8x the size of samples previously exposed at the NSTTF Solar Furnace to identify if there was a difference in ignition conditions at the different scales. Both the plastic and the piñon pine tree in the video were exposed to a thermal pulse for 9 seconds. Sandia conducted the tests, and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency provided funding.

@@chuckkopczak9366 heard of the The Antikythera mechanism? No one thought that at that time there was enough advanced enough technology to do that. Historians don't always have full facts. I think this is going to be used for testing things against the thermal flash from nuclear explosions, can't think about anything else that this could be used, specially due the way the mirrors look like, as if they were designed with an actuator that changes the shape of each mirror to be capable of modulating the beam intensity very fast. So its actually meaningful to see how a tree would react to the thermal flash of a nuclear explosion.
