New to knife making can u recommend a step by step instructional on soldering and soldering a bolster onto a blade something a bit more for the greenhorn
Once I’ve heard about a Smith Wesson’s blade smith that did this with the knibes he made, ti avoid dirt and liquids deposition in the gap between blade and gard. Amazing technique
I like to furnace braze my guards in the forge , using copper or bronze filler ,,,,, the brazing metal (and its bond) will survive heat treat , and the result is both strong and good looking after "cleanup"
would help if a lot of these vids had verbal instruction with it, cause i wanna know after he soldered the guard, what that jar of pink stuff he then went to apply afterwards. Im trying to learn and don't already know what everything is. There ARE newbies that watch these vids too.
Hi Scotty, the jar of pink stuff is flux. Flux aids in soldering and desoldering processes by removing oxide films which form on the surface of metals being soldered. It increases the wetting ability of the solder, causing it to flow more uniformly over surfaces without balling-up (dewetting). These videos are more just a tour of Bob's shop, to show his equipment and process rather than instructional videos. Check out Walter Sorrell's RU-vid channel for instructional videos: www.youtube.com/@WalterSorrellsBlades
Ummm wtf. Who solders a guard on. Why the hell isn't the slot filed correctly to fit snug. If you got gaps throw that shit away and make a guard that fits.
Hack? A quick use of the Google shows Bob Dozier is not hack by long shot. So you make a tight fit. You think he doesn't also? Keyboard commando on though righteous dude of smithing.
