It’s cool that you did this experiment but the stock wiring wins by a landslide. The Gunstreet was WAY too bright and sounded thin and “tinny” as others have described. This video actually convinced me to go exclusively soldered from now on. Thanks for the education. 🤘

The good thing is, you can turn the treble switch OFF and it acts just like the original harness when you roll the volume off, in case you missed that part. Also, the sound has nothing to do with soldered vs unsoldered.

@Gearslayer92 I'm learning to.solder now, but I still took my Ibanez RGR320EX in to my tech for a pickup swap, it has a floating trem I don't want to deal with 😂

You should learn how the trem works and to set it up properly. Guitar setup is fun once you’ve got the hang of it. It took me quite a few hours, but I can set up a Strat like nobody’s fuckin business now. Besides, if you get it completely out of whack you can always take it to the tech.

For those wondering the difference in brightness, Kyle explains at the end of the vid the stock pots were 300k vs the 500k in the solderless. So if you prefer the stock configuration it is mostly likely you just prefer 300k pots. Just leaving this here cause I almost missed it myself lol. Don't let the sound difference fool you into staying soldered. Solderless set ups are so good with keeping unwanted noise down as well as being able to change pickups on the fly without any sound quality loss.
@MickH60
@MickH60 16 дней назад
I like the original as it's backed off because it's warmer sounding, like using the front pickup for clean sections, I've never had 300K pots in any of my Les Pauls..
@theboss0time
@theboss0time 15 дней назад
You do know that the pots might not be dead on that value. There are value tolerances, so you could have a 470K pot instead of a 500K.

This comparison just isn't very fair. You were wearing a different shirt when testing the pickups so that tone cloth clearly affected the results. Once all the wiring circuitry layout clicks, soldering is so easy. I used to loath it until I figured out this wire goes here and this goes here and there is always a constant, no matter how complex the wiring gets. Once that clicks, it's easy as.

I'm an old fart, I've been farking around with wiring in cars, motorcycles and guitars most of my life, I've NEVER had any problems with a good solder joint, I've had A LOT of problems with plug in joints, and component failure, electrical interference from poorly insulated connections, loose connections over time, the less parts the better imo.... PS, I've only ever use 500k pots in my Les Pauls...

I’ve gotten past the point where the actual soldering is the challenge. My solder joints are usually pretty clean and I have a basic idea of where everything goes. I'm a fan of 50's wiring on LesPauls. It accomplishes the same thing, and just makes more sense on a 2 volume 2 tone pot equipped guitar. Now for guitars with only 1 volume and 1 tone pot, modern wiring with a treble bleed curcuit is the hot ticket. The only time I've run into a problem using these wiring options, is on my PRS SE McCarty .594 singlecut standard. It has the 58/15 LT pickups with 3 wires for coil tapping. It comes with modern wiring and a treble bleed curcuit on both volumes from the factory. Well, when I converted it to 50's wiring and eliminated the treble bleeds. The pickups being low output and the tone pots wired with different value resistors for the coil taps. It makes the tones way to thin sounding at any level under 10. This has me perplexed, because I'm not fully understanding why this is happening? I've come to the conclusion that in order to utilize the factory Low Turn pickups at any setting below wide open. They need the minimum amount of resistance to retain maximum character and a wide frequency range. Using 50's wiring with those coil tapping curcuits, just thins out the signal way too much. Now I've gotta go back under the hood of that thing and wire it back modern and add a good treble bleed to each volume pot again! You live and learn. If anyone has a clue as to why this wiring configuration reacts this way? Please chime in to enlighten me. So far I've found not a single human that can explain this to me in any logical way? I'm tempted to 86 the Low Turns and start from scratch with higher output pickups.

Soldering can be tricky, but you get good at it fast. The key, and I mean THE KEY, is having a quality iron. I wasted a lot of time (and made some ugly messes) with a cheap shitty iron. Since I got a decent one, it’s been smooth sailing. That being said, it is still time consuming, so solderless setups are really appealing.

I just gutted a 90s rg and put emg circuitry and pickups... it was fast and solderless...and man this thing shreds like the 80s and grinds like the 90s...the only tool required was drilling the wire tunnel for the jackwires to accommodate the width of the terminal connectors..

Looks like a winner. Hopefully these do well, and they expand into doing the solderless systems for the SG… that’s what I need. I have one with the PCB harness, like you pulled out of that LP. I’ve already replaced a jack, a switch, and recently the entire board… and now another switch is starting to get a bit dodgy. And let me tell you… I CANNOT solder one damn bit. Speaking of that LP… does that one have a 490T in the bridge? If so, what do you think? I have one (with the PCB plug) sitting around, was thinking of switching the Classic 57 that’s in there and seeing how I get on. I know the 57 is a “better” pickup, but I haven’t been getting along with it lately.
