I find it astounding just how many of the surviving steam locos ran on the S&D at one time or another. This being a prime example.

Kind of shocking that only one of these 2251s is preserved, considering how many were built.

feels like there should be one at every western region heritage line there is. i suppose they survived less because they were less glamorous than a hall, but bigger than a pannier, so scrap value was probably pretty poor value for money

I didn't know about this class. You are right it does have a charm to it.

There's lots of British steam classes we don't know of that are still around and aren't around.

I don't know who David Rouse was, but bless him for saving the locomotive. May he rest in peace

David Rouse was at one stage of his life a BR engine Driver. He assisted in 'preserving' or helping to preserve many ex GWR engines, Coaches and Wagons. I also understand he helped out with locating certain LNER Teak Coaches. He is/was one of the many unsung heroes of the early heritage movement.

David Rouse was a very good friend of mine. I worked with him for many years and miss him greatly. He was a very dedicated railway presevationist and former BR footplate crew. His knowledge of railway matters seemed infinate. He played a major role in saving not only 3205 but plenty of other vehicles as well. He will always be in our thoughts and I am still in contact with several members of his lovely family. John Rollings

GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY COLLECTS GOODS I had to read this like three times before I got it right.

Ah yes, one of my favorite GWR locos. Although I do that wish more than one were still with us today, say maybe 3 or 4, I am thankful that we're stuck with 3205 however. Otherwise we would be building a new one if she hadn't made it to preservation thanks to the late David Rouse.

Fabulous branch line engine with good water and coal capacity. Sounds superb and looks pretty too. Many happy summer days firing her -Collett's branch line convertible!

Amongst my railway DVD collection, I have a film entitled "The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway: Passion for Steam", which features this very locomotive in action from Gotherington to Toddington. No. 3205 has quite a charm; many of her class worked on the Didcot, Newbury & Southampton Railway (the Great Western mainline between Winchester and Didcot) now long gone.

Glad it was preserved, it does indeed have a charm.

Lovely episode. Great thing to come home to after work. Cheers, mate. Looking forward to the episode on the surviving Dean Goods in the Steam Museum in Swindon. Considering how often it comes up in your reviews, if it's less than 5 minutes long I'll be disappointed. Surely there's a lot to cover with the near-century old Victorian workhorse that stubbornly refused to be replace no matter what Churchward, Collett, Hawksworth, Ivatt, or Riddles threw at it.

The one on the Dean Goods would be interesting considering that No. 2516 is not only on static display, but she is also separated from her tender to demonstrate life on the footplate.

I never really was a Great Western überfan (has nothing to do with the username I swear), but I always liked the Collett Goods. They are like toy versions of the stereotypical GWR machines!

3205 is now in need of an extensive restoration, with costs of about £300K plus.

Shame more weren't preserved, or more standard 10 boilers existed for replica projects...
@FreeManFreeThought
@FreeManFreeThought 5 лет назад
I'm sure with time someone will make a suitable boiler and someone is bound to try given all of the new build projects around these days. Just like people started building replica or new build tall ships in the 60's and 70's when the originals were at risk of extinction.

Great video, but it still suffers from the same problem as the rest of the sole slips in my opinion, there is not enough of the locomotives preservation era history included
@ChristheXelent
@ChristheXelent 5 лет назад
Sorry, but after two minutes, you run out of angles. And with engines that don't work, it's difficult to pad things out to make it look more engaging
@wshr1032
@wshr1032 5 лет назад
Alright that makes sense, but using the Collet Goods as a example for operational (or resonantly running) locos I find it hard to believe that you, Adam and Sam don’t have some footage of 3205 running a few years ago before its boiler ticket expired, that could be used along with the stationary angle shots to make the video a bit longer to include some of the highlights of the locos preservation history
@ChristheXelent
@ChristheXelent 5 лет назад
@@wshr1032 that might work for some, but not all. With engines that may never run again such as 'Butler Henderson', 'Shannon', 'Lion', 'William Francis', the GER E4 and so on, you've only got static positions to play with. It's also uneconomical to spend up to ten years chasing a single loco all over the country, which makes the production of a 15 minute video about one engine a logistical struggle. It's easier and more effective to have one rule for all and leave longer videos for specials that warrant it or classes preserved in quantity.

Good vid as always. Disagree with the point on charm. It’s an ungainly looking locomotive.
