Dixie!! It was so much fun meeting you and getting to spend time with you on this hike! Everyone in our crew thinks you were a wealth of knowledge and inspiration and just wonderful to be around. Your video is gorgeous and really captured the splendor of the Tetons. I know you roll solo, but I hope we get a chance to explore more parts of the backcountry together. Thanks for putting me/ us in the video. You have converted us to lifetime Homemade Wanderlust viewers! Take Courage and we hope to see you out there!
Ben! Thank y’all for letting me crash your party ♥️ It started things off right for me on the trip. Y’all keep in touch and if you’re ever coming through Bama lemme know!
What I love most about Dixie is she actually hikes and takes footage of it. So many of these backpacking RU-vidrs just show off new gear and I truly appreciate someone who just shows what it’s really all about! Probably much harder than sitting down doing a gear video but let’s us all go along for the journey.
I love how after all these years and miles, the only piece of gear you haven't changed is the makeshift aluminum pot that you were told at the beginning that you shouldn't be using.
Jackson Home is really beautiful any time of year! But This ois definitely the most beautiful hike Dixie has filmed. Some of her shots look like paintings of the West, from the 1800’s because of the smoky air!
Oh Dixie! What a magnificent hike! This one is the most beautiful! I can’t imagine being without a tent in that rain, but you manage every situation the trail throws at you with such equanimity and good spirits! You are such a good example to all of us!
26 minutes of pure joy! We are lost in the vast beauty of this beautiful country and *blink* conversation with a ground squirrel (or one of its relatives)! I so enjoy seeing your adventures through your lens and hearing the story you tell. Thank you!
Your combination of naturalist, back country skills, storyteller, cinematographer, and documentarian are truly remarkable. Of course, there is also your charming, matter of fact and down to earth personality which makes us all feel welcome. It is like stopping by for a sweet tea on the back porch rocker.
I loved hearing the music by the Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian, “Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia”. It’s an old favorite and never better than here with Dixie’s stunning film skills.
After watching this and feeling tears well up, I sincerely felt: "You did a very good thing inviting Jessica on to Blue Dot." The thunderstorm segment gave me pause remembering your CDT adventures! I am so glad you made it safely through an electrified high country. I hiked through that region and fell in love with it in 1980. I recall seeing ash from Mt. St. Helens on glaciers in the Tetons and Wind River Range. I had the tremendous experience of learning nature photography techniques from Bill Ratcliffe at the (then) Audubon Society's Trail Lake Ranch near Dubois. Thank you for being you. You are a gift to all who aspire to adventure. Big virtual hug!
I've been loving the content here. I've been a bushcrafter, camper, trapper, fisher and survivalist for decades. Never done a thru hike. Well, I'm going to start small and hike the Vermont long trail next summer. Always a good time to try something new. Thanks for the inspiration.
You are flippin' amazing. I only hope to have the courage and stamina that you have in your adventures. I am getting involved later in life at 54, but excited about it. I may be hindered by age and not in the best of shape, but I am living with the knowledge that the better part of my life is behind me, so what the hell, why not just go for it. If it kills me, I died doing my adventure. (And I'm not afraid of dying, I'm afraid of getting old without living my best life) I'm just waiting for Alabama to close the gates of Hell (100°+ down here in Mobile) so I can get back outside and condition more. Thank you Dixie for documenting all your experience for us beginners!
Dixie thank you so much for sharing this video!!! You captured the beauty of the Tetons! It feels like we are “there hiking with you”. Very very well done!
Love this style video… on the trail, lots of nature, and just enough sharing of the feel and experience. Vicariously hiking and camping through your eyes and lens. Thanks for being you for us!
I love the sound of thunder in the mountains. It's a shame that so many people only see the Tetons only from the road. There's so much more to them. I hope you enjoyed your hike. Too bad it was smokey. My heart goes out to all those that have lost their homes, and towns to the fires.
The most incredible thunderstorm I have ever witnessed was in 1984 when I was attending the Grand Teton Orchestral Seminar and living in a condo in Teton Village. The storm rolled in about 2:00AM and lasted over an hour. Very loud and very long thunderclaps, and long bursts of lightening which flashed for two to three seconds each and often lit the entire valley. I sat comfortably in an easy chair and watched from behind a double sliding glass door. Much more comfortable than your set up. My three roommates slept through it all. Their loss. Two years later, I moved to Wyoming and have been living here ever since.
That music is an excerpt from the ballet Spartacus, by Khachaturian. I love it. Gorgeous version on YT with Berlin Philharmonic at beautiful outdoor venue. The climax/high point is aurally and visually stunning.
Anyone remember that Modest Mouse song? "Blame it on the Tetons, yeah I need a scapegoat now..." I'd be singing this the whole hike. Beautiful footage! Glad you guys survived the storm okay!
Teton Crest Trail was my first BIG backpacking trip and I used some of your videos to help prepare. very cool to see you did this trail. Thanks for all the help you give the backpacking community.
Hey Dixie! I’m from WY and you did a beautiful job capturing the state I love! I thought of you and your channel lots this summer as I traveled east and did some camping, hiking and climbing. You’ve inspired me to someday hike the AT. I certainly underestimated the differences of Rocky Mountains to the Appalachian. Hope you come back soon- check out the Wind Rivers or Bighorns! Happy Trails 🧡
You are one of my heroes. You are such an inspiration. Anytime you want to hike Pictured Rocks Lakeshore let me and my wife know. We did most of it last year.
I can't wait for you to go to Isle Royale! I spent two weeks there, starting in Rock Harbor before going to daisy farm and then north to the minong ridge, which we took all the way to windigo, then we came back to rock harbor on the greenstone ridge trail.
You are so lucky Dixie to have so much vast space to hike and explore. I live in the UK where there isn't much space anymore, so I've been camping and hiking trails in the South West since 1992 and I love your country.
Dixie, once again your pictures are so beautiful it makes me cry. Its amazing how u have grown since the AT days ...its amazing IM still following you ! LOL. I love to go back and watch u during those days. Thx for all u do.
Holy crap! Did the Natural Geographic Society produce this?! The video quality is incredible, the shots are beautiful - seems like a big-budget documentary but with Dixie's southern charm. Dixie! Love your videos, gear reviews and backpacking tips, but especially enjoy seeing the hikes. When I can't hit the trail, I tag along with you on your trips. Thanks for having us along!
Gorgeous opening nature photography! You continue to be a master of your craft, Dixie! Beautiful mountains and, er, "interesting" rain, hail, thunder and lightning. Wow. Just watching you is an adventure. And with a poncho tarp? Bravery incarnate! Hike on Dixie. Tortoise
Im a nurse dealing with this influx of COVID pts...and to stop and get to see you Miss Dixie in this new trail video, is like a breath of fresh air! Thank you so much for sharing this experience with us! Such amazing country..
When I'm solo I almost exclusively use a 9x9 tarp and a one person bug shelter. All together, including guidelines and stakes the setup is 1 lb 10 oz and none of it is dyneema. The tarp is an REI nylon tarp and the bathtub of the Yama Mountain Gear bug shelter is silpoly. And it rocked in thunderstorms along the Allegheny Front in 2020. Add 1.75 ounces (lighter if you use dyneema cordage) and you can have 25ft of 550 cord. Hang the tarp from a ridgeline between two trees and you can give yourself a nice front porch with your trekking poles to enjoy the scenery.
You are currently in my backyard, I am far to old to be packing around now though. The magic of growing up in the Jackson Hole Valley and Yellowstone will have to suffice for me. Thank you for bringing a bit of nostalgia to this old Lady!
New camera ? Visuals are stunning! Also that has to be one of the most stunning locations for a thru hike I've seen since your JMT footage. Jeez I gotta get out of Scotland soon.
Wow !!! Your video skills are incredible. Thank you for sharing your trips. It always impresses me how you are willing to step out of your comfort zone and try new things.
Reminds me of when I did the Teton Crest trail from Rendevous Mt. to Jenny lake. Pack weighed 90 lbs and I weighed 135. Took 9 days as we took a some rest days to day hike..Table Mtn....Saw a sailplane cross from Idaho, circle the Grand and then back to Idaho..It crossed over Table Mtn. where we were less than 500 feet above. Inspired me to become a sailplane pilot/instructor..Seeing the Grand Teton after a blizzard swept through..in Sept., like 1988..went from 65F to 23F and 6" of snow with lightning...Had ice axes to safely cross a snow field (you crossed it in this video but it was WAY bigger when I was there! SUch a wonderful time. Your video was so cool!!
The way the last few minutes of the video was put together with the music and landscape montage before ending with the animals and the lament of having to go home was beautiful. I had to re-watch that part a few times 😂
Nothing says "Nature" like a good oboe solo followed by flute and strings leading up to a full orchestra! 😊 I went from tent to tarp to poncho/tarp (MLD rectangular), to Henessy Hammock to Gossamer Gear Spinn Twinn and hammock with separate bug net and straps to Hammock Gear DCF winter tarp with doors and a Hummingbird hammock solo and a Sierra Madre Shield bug net. Steady improvement. Gorgeous scenery captured well and the best Southern narration on RU-vid! Love what you do, Dixie! 👍👍
I feel like you are safer in a hole/ditch. The lightning pose is about getting as close as to the ground as possible. You can't get closer than being in the ground. Good instincts
You could tell in the audio the dude was freaking out from storm to storm (cloud to cloud) lightning type thunder (not as loud and abrupt). That doesn't rule out a ground strike but if your hair isn't wet you can at least tell something is developing where you're standing on the ground because it will stand up and geez gtfo or get in the lightning stance. Regardless, yeah a crapshoot when above treeline and read converging storms and hope for the best because that's where you're at.
Wow! When I saw you butt-scootin’ down those rocks, boy did that bring back memories for me. Not far from that very spot I was stuck on a ledge. In a panic I was in that flight or fright mode. My legs were frozen. I was following my husband up the trail. Little did I know he was off trail. We had been hiking for about 10 hours, it was nearing dark and I was exhausted when I came to a hill of dirt. It seemed like nothing but by this point My legs were so shaky that knew if I misstepped I was falling 300 feet down rocks and boulders. So I just froze. Crying in a panic I just started praying. And out of nowhere came 2 hikers. They were above me and said “how did you get down there?” They told me to turn around. They met me at the switchback and helped me get back on trail. Paul and David. That was back in September 2017. They were truly my trail angels that day. Paintbrush will always be my favorite trail. Keep hiking and inspiring folks to get outdoors Dixie🥾🥾🤎🙏🏼
WOW! what an incredibly beautiful filming! I “happened” upon you a few months ago, and am still catching up on seeing all your vids. SO glad I did find your channel. And the music you put to this was perfect. You are very talented, and very likeable. I am also very appreciative of your informative/comparative vids. Thanks, Dixie!
I just got back from the Tetons. The notification for this came up while I was there and I saved it until I got home. We tried to go hike the North Shore(Lake Superior/Minnesota/Gunflint Trail) at the end of our trip. We are from Michigan and Michigan is booked 6 months in advance, so Duluth and Grand Marais seemed to be the answer. We were so wrong. Same story there too!
Have been watching since 2018 when my friend hiked the PCT and I tracked her jealously because I wasn’t at a place in my life where I could take off for six months. I appreciate your videography. You capture the beauty and quirks of the landscape and its people and human travelers and residents so sincerely. Thank you for sharing. Your journeys remind me what a beautiful world we live in.
Grand views despite the stormy weather. Enjoyed the scenery around Lake Solitude especially. Same stormy off and on weather (and smoke) experience for me in the Winds about the same time. War Eagle!
Loved it this video Dixie. But I gotta say, even though I am not real familiar with your bus raft knowledge, I was kinda surprised you didn't have a more substantial shelter setup.. I worried for you Dear!! But,, YOU DID IT!! More than I can say for myself, who only talks or dreams about getting fit and not scared to get out into the outdoors and brave the boonies I would love....I've only been simple camping, years ago. I'm in my mid 60's and hubby can't do much...I don't want to really be alone...God Bless Your Strength and Fortitude! Thanks so much! You ARE A ANGEL of The Mountain Trails!! Have fun in NZ!! Sounds MAGICAL! I hope they don't force A Lockdown, that would surely suck big ones!!!! 🙄 Keep On Trekkin!' 🤗😇👍🏕🏞🗺🏔🌌- Mindi💚💚🌹
As a 58 year old male I really enjoy your videos ,and think how lucky your are to do these amazing backpack trips at such a young age.I am really thinking of quitting my job of 38 years in the next year and attempting an AT thru hike.Your story and videos have helped inspire me.I thank you for that.
Back in the past like 20+ years ago I was doing a packing trip in the Sangre De Christo Mountains in Colorado headed up to to a lake near one of the Crestone Peaks. Suddenly from the North a storm blew over the ridge and we were already near a ridge line just above timberline. My son, his friend, and myself did not even have the time to grab a tarp out of my pack. In the trail we were in a slight depression/drainage area and we had to squat for the lightening stance. It happened so quickly we could not go down towards tree line. With the hail, sleet, and rain with lightning all around it was intense. This was at over 11K feet in elevation and I've never been that close to lightening strikes. Once the lightening abated we made our way to some granite outcroppings near some trees where we pulled out a tarp to shield from the continuing rain.
