He does keep fish alive too long, sometimes. If you know you're gonna throw it back then definitely hang onto it and have a quick talk about the fish then let it go. But if you know it's going to be dinner then it really doesn't need to be sitting there suffocating for ten fucking minutes.

thanks for sharing the struggle! this channel has inspired me to move to a dfferent part of my country where there's more nature, beaches, lakes etc. just watching his vids calms me down, now I' ve gotta get outdoors as much! better than any meds for depression!

Those "jewels" are otolith bones. They can be bisected and count the rings to determine the age of the fish.

@@andycampbell6032 actually all vertebrates have them and they also aren't bones, their rocks, because they are made of calcium carbonate, as like chalk or limestone. otoliths help the animals' balance, movement, and direction and also can help with hearing sound, so it's like how our inner ears work, but for fish and birds.

Matt, those 'jewels' are called otoliths. And, you can use them to find out the age of fish. Under a microscope you will see rings, just like trees, and you can count the rings to find out the age of the fish.

@@travisclark7286 otolith. Oto is greek for ear, so these are ear stones. Part of the inner ear, fish need them for balance, its like a tilt sensor. The age thing is 100% true, most common traditional technique in fisheries biology for assessing the age structure of a stock. Those otos are quite big, which is typical for a demersal fish.

To get the true age, the otoliths have to be cut like a tree. A scientist from WA's marine research department told me that when he cut my Oldest Snapper Otolith..Cheers, and Yes a Great show..

Hello, I live in the Northern part of the United States. Lake Erie is my backyard we have a fish here called a sheephead and it has what we call stones in it’s head and their is also two in their head. Sheep head stones on the one side of the head has an indent of the letter L. People call them Lucky stones. Just love your videos. Love seeing what the other side of the world is like. Love your enthusiasm. Your the best.
