Camping in the back of a pickup on the top of Whitetop Mountain, Virginia, in early March of 2021. My experience, pictures, and aerial shots, including a beautiful time-lapse of the sunrise!
As a Richmonder desperate to escape the suburbs and seemingly running out of spots I know to explore in VA, this was an important video for me. Thanks!
Nice video, thanks for showing some love for where I grew up. I can see Whitetop and Mt. Rogers from my front door, I love it up there too! Lots of gems in SWVA
Hello, my new friend. The video of every moment of your camping gives me healing. I am glad to be your friend on a great channel. Have a nice Sunday. 👍👍👍🤙🤙🤙👌
Four years ago we went up that road to white top mountain in a PT cruiser with five grown adults in it and camping gear came back down made a right went down the mountain had to pull off onto the sandpit right before the tee at the stop sign we lost all of our breaks.
LOL, water and some chapstick. Loved the toilet chops. Loved that you shared your source on that. LOL Eat some spicy food to warm up. You used your drone footage like a pro. That was awesome. LOL so....let's go with the sleeping bag. You are hilarious. Was that a fart? LMAO! Beautiful spot to camp. Daybreak was incredible. Loved the Ken Burns after making your coffee and that music was really great. Your use of soft and soothing music with your humor makes this feel really fresh. Loving your editing. Your hiking angles are wonderful. You killed it MAT! ❤️👍👏 Donovan & Jodi
Hey, Donovan! Thanks so much for checking it out! I know my videos are long compared to some others. Man I tell you what, it's all about just having fun lol. Thanks very much for the kind words! I really enjoy learning more and more about film making, drones, etc. And I'm not telling about the fart haha!
Just found out bout white top and want to go. How bad are the roads? I have a Chevy hhr. Wondering if I can make it to the top. Thanks.. the video was informative
I just have to put my truck in four-wheel drive just in one small section toward the top. Everything else was super easy but since I believe your vehicle is front wheel drive you should be fine to make it all the way to the top
You are too kind! 😁😂 Next is the great state of Utah! Moab, rimrocker, and all over!!! Can't wait!!! That will be I'm May, so before then I'll do some local stuff. I'd love to visit MD sometime!
From what I understand, it's best to camp in the designated dispersed camp sites up there. Camping on the side of the road can potentially be dangerous if there are folks up there drinking and driving. There are a handful of campsites up there that are nice. But to answer your question, I'm not 100 percent if it's legal or not to camp on the side of the road. Sorry about that.
I don’t want to be a downer … but it’s actually illegal to park on the mountain overnight. You can camp anywhere along the AT. But you have to walk in. (According to the webpage)
Thanks so much for checking out the video. It's a really cool place to camp. No the trail's actually really easy to find. Here's a link to where it's at maps.app.goo.gl/DcbLAtiszxMyGjoP7
awesome! you should head up there one winter night. you can see sugar and beech mountain resorts glowing! the new led lights they put at the resort are super bright! glad to see you enjoy one of the best areas in the area!
Oh man that sounds awesome! I would love to go back and see that!!!! It's was an awesome place and I didn't have enough time to explore like I wanted to. Thanks for watching my friend!
Really enjoyed your video! I have a mid size Canyon with a soft topper too and have been lamenting about not having a larger bed or a hard shell cap. I'm inspired to try some grab and go camping like yourself and try a night in the bed. Will have to sleep at an angle but that is no problem. My only issue is finding places nearby that since my state's parks open mid May.
@@FatMatAdventures We camp in the hudson valley, lower NY region. Most the wild/free camping is about 2 hours away in the Catskill mountain. First come first served for just a handful of sites. At that point I'd rather book a state park spot but just about every time it's like camping at a block party.
@@FatMatAdventures the western part of Maryland is very nice. The Catoctin Mountain have great camping/cabins and hiking trails. If you want to see wild ponies, Assateague Island National Seashore is one of my favorite places to camp. Assateage Island State Park is nearby although I heard it kind of crowded.
Man that looks like a picture perfect spot!! How is that not constantly occupied? I like camping variety and this looked super fun and laid back. Cool little setup in the truck too pal! There is a Lovers Leap in the Black Hills too. I bet there's a lot of them actually....🤔
Yeah I did some research and there are tons of lovers leaps. It was an amazing trip and I couldn't believe not many people were out there, being such great weather. Had the place pretty much to myself! Now that I'm back home, I'll catch up on your new vids! 😁. They probably all suck. Haha jk 😜
@@FatMatAdventures I like him , he’s just got a little more about the $$ lately. .have to give super chat for him to read a comment on live ? That’s nuts to me .
Agreed. He was subbed to me for a while and unsubbed just recently. Too much Lolo Overland lately so I haven't watched him in a couple weeks. $$$ can turn a person. I don't think I could ever go that direction like he has.
@@FatMatAdventures I have no idea how to tell If someone in S to me. And I don’t watch that stuff. .I S to everyone and if they do it back great. .if they don’t oh well. .but I’d say 90 percent of people do , just not always the big ones
Sorry for the late reply. There is another RU-vidr that had a video about it and my family and I went to Gatlinburg Tennessee and I decided to drive up there and camp for the night but basically I found it from another RU-vidrs video.
Thanks for the kind words! I had seen a video (much better than mine) about it from The Outdoor Gear Review and decided that was one place I REALLY wanted to go see. So when we visited Gatlinburg, TN, I saw that it was only 3 hours away from where we were staying. I just decided to go there for the nice to check it out and I'm sooo glad I did!
