I REALLY like your method of splitting down dmaller pieces of wood. Way better than trying to get them to stand up right. I recently went with a full size ax. It was great for splitting 10" rounds, but was awful for anything smaller than 4" or so, and was completely unusable in the tent for re-splitting to the sizes you had here. I will have to be on the lookout for something more intermediate sized, around what you had here. Should still be okay for bigger things if squatting a bit (so as to not hit your shins if you miss the wood) but be good for the method shown of quartering 3" stuff as well.

I also want to do this in the woods. But I'm always thinking about how would I counter insects and other dangerous creatures
