Thank you for this video. I drove the TS waterway in July 2021 and yes, some locks are not accessable by road. I am thinking of doing it by canoe. The countryside and towns are beautiful. Your video told me some things to think about. BTW I am 73 and want to do it solo.
Love this idea! I’m inspired but really prefer remote trips where I’m not seeing boats etc. I still wanna do this trip though, always wanted to see the whole Trent system
Thanks! Remote trips are great too. I did a 7 day trip in Temagami when I was 16 which was such a cool experience. I was actually surprised how few boats I saw on the Trent-Severn during my trip. On day 1 for example, I didn't see a single boat moving on the water until I got to Canal Lake. Still lots of cottages and other man-made scenery though.
Excited to see this video series, as I have been planning on doing this route myself. Did the Rideau in 2018: paddling.topicwise.com/doc/?o=1mr&doc_id=21124&v=7i
This is such a great idea and I can’t wait to be immersed in your travels... and continuing to add with the format that you use with your bike tour should be everything that I’ve come to expect from your series.
Exciting! I wasn't expecting you to have a video series from this past summer due to the pandemic; covid threw a wrench into my tour plans as well. Very glad to see you adapted to the situation and could get some content together. Keep on keepin' on!
Thanks! Yes totally. Most provincial parks were fully booked for a lot of the summer, and with so many private campgrounds being closed or not allowing tents, a bike tour like I've done in the past would have been very tricky to pull off. The fact that lock stations allow camping, and only to people who arrived by watercraft was the real game changer!
Well I am looking forward to this new adventure. It looks like you've planned it very well! It is something a bit different but the narration you do will still be excellent and you will no doubt have some great footage just like before. 01:32 - That's a great pic!
A question…. You went west to east along the Trent canal. Parks Canada on its website, recommends paddling east to west, that is Trenton to Lake Simcoe. Did you consider that option? Based on your trip, do you think east to west is a viable paddling option for a solo canoe (given the current)?
Having found the page that I believe you're referring to on the website, their reason for that recommendation is the winds on the large lakes. They only make that recommendation if you are planning on canoeing the entire 387km route. On my trip I avoided the 3 largest lakes (Simcoe, Couchiching, and Rice). At 3:45 I explained why I picked my route and direction and I still think it's was the best option given the parameters of my trip.
I have thought about this same trip myself in my 16 ft. Kayak, and am eager to watch your videos. Where did you get the info on camp sites, & route maps?
It was a great trip, I really enjoyed it! The Parks Canada page about the Trent-Severn waterway has lots of useful information such as a list of which lock stations offer camping and there are basic maps you can download.
Thanks for taking us along on your 2020 human powered adventure. In a past video you met a man and woman at a campground who were on a long distance canoe trip and it seemed to attract your interest...
Yes, they were certainly an amazing source of inspiration! Earlier on that same trip I met another group who were doing a 3 day canoe trip on the Rideau Canal which I was pretty jealous of too.
looking forward to this series!! your bike tours inspired me and helped me plan my first solo bike tour this past september from Toronto to Montreal, and we recently purchased a canoe so this is perfect timing for some next summer inspiration!
