Things I like about her videos: 1. no music. 2. pure and genuine 3. no fast video transitions and effects. 4. no influencer vibes. 5 just pure vlogging and documenting.

When I am kayaking, I will add low volume music in quiet spots, when there are rapids, I will put some rapid music in with the water sounds, but anytime there is talking or nature sounds, I fade out the music. I don't have a strong feeling about music, pro or con.

A picturesque presentation. I strongly recommend that you get a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), and carry it on your person 24 hours a day. If your pump up paddle board fails you, injury, prowlers (2 or 4 legged), whatever occurs, you can summon rescue assistance. It has to save you only once to pay for itself. Better yet, you will never need it, and the cost was wasted money. Get it, and be prepared. Courtesy of Half Vast

I'm turning 27 next month as well, and hopefully I can start to explore outdoors and nature next year when my job settles down and finances in check. Yea fishing is hard. When I started, i wished someone else taught me instead of looking like an idiot and catching nothing lol. But thank God figured everything out. Here are just some quick pointers for you: At 9:04, what your holding is called Berkeley Power worm. They are mostly used for large mouth and small mouth bass. The way you rig these curly tail worm is by using a rig called "Texas Rig". You typically fish that rig really slowly and bounce along the bottom near a structure (rocks, piers, docks, sunken tree, and etc). Not in the wide middle of the water. At 9:13, the boppers are mostly used for smaller fish like sunfish, perch, and etc. It's mostly for fish that floats in the middle water column near the shore. You typically want to put on a live bait like Earthworms (which can be found by flipping over a rock). I hate using boppers because they're just not practical. At 9:39, what your holding is called Curly Tail grub. They are typically attached on to a small jig head and bounce on the bottom and slowly retrieve it to you. They're not meant to be putting on a bopper and just cast out and wait. I typically use them when I wade in a river or a small stream for trout or bass. At 10:03, the fishing jumping out the water could be bass chasing baitfish or carp doing a top water roll. To catch these active fish, I would use a crank bait, throw it out, then retrieve at a steady pace back to you. I would use a fan method of casting. At 10:08, what your holding is a spinner bait. The way you work them is literally just cast it out and retrieve it back to you at a steady consistent pace. They can be used to catch anything predatory. You won't catch anything if you let them sit out and do nothing. Hope my tips helps. I really wanna see you catch your first fish lol! You can watch some large channels for fishing tips like 1rod1reel, JonB, Realistic fishing, or ExtremePhillyFishing

Good stuff Madison. So majority of the tackle you got in that package is for bass fishing. The presentations used for trout are more finesse. Trout in most of these interior lakes primarily feed on aquatic inverebrates, so having a few flies which imitate these food items would be more effective. A spinning reel, as opposed to a spincasting reel like the one you were using, would also allow you to cast much further. But yeah, there's bit of a learning curve but over time you'll pick up what works or not, eventually catching becomes consistent. Good luck and happy to answer fishing questions if you have any. 🙂

Yes or the simple live worm on a bobble (rainbow trout, most trouts/ dont count steelhead but they are close) are super small) at close to correct depth. Spin casting reel if it tangles as a new comer your done for the trip.

Edit: oops, just saw another fishing video you posted. Looks like you got your lures figured out already! I’m no expert, but if you don’t want to mess with fly fishing or worms, I personally have a lot of success with kastmasters (these lures cast very far and are great for fishing on lakes and in water that’s at least a meter deep) or rooster tails (these little spinners are good in rivers and seem best when it’s still early spring and the fish are a little lethargic) when fishing for trout in the interior U.S. Both of those options are beginner-friendly and would work with the rod/reel you already own.

BC has some pretty strict fishing regulations, check the region guidelines before you start and make sure you have your license and required stamps. Depending on the season and body of water you can get into big trouble with the conservation officers if you get caught breaking the regs. For example only single barbless hooks are permitted in BC, but almost all new hooks will be barbed. You have to crimp the barb before you start fishing, it helps to clip some needle nose pliers to your fishing vest.

Thank you for taking the time and investing the effort in documenting your outing, Madison. This lake looks like trout heaven! Just watching a video like this relaxes me and, until recently, I did a lot of fishing out of a kayak on similar water. For a beginner, any small shiny lure like a mepps spinner or tiny kastmaster would be ideal. And rather than cast, troll. Let out about 50' of line (you want the lure to be trailing beyond the disturbance of your wake). If you see fish feeding on the surface - usually in the evening or morning and often on overcast days - troll a little bit faster, which will bring the lure closer to the surface. Try different depths by varying your speed on the paddleboard. Trout eat both insects and small fish, so lots of options are available. My all-time favorite trolling lure for trout is a bright chrome mini-wobbler (I believe they are sometimes called snap-beans, because they are stubby like a bean). And trolling a caddis fly has been very productive on days when the water is like glass and surface feeding is apparent. Whatever lure you use, going tiny will increase your chances of catching trout. I'd wish you good luck, but luck has little to do with catching fish! P.S. Most importantly, when you do catch a trout, wet your hands before handling if you don't plan to eat it. Protective slime protects the fish by keeping pathogens at bay. Dry hands removes the slime and, more often than not, infection will inevitably kill the trout. In fact, if you have hemostats or needlenose pliers to remove the hook without touching the fish, all the better!

I also had to teach myself to fish as an adult and it can take a long time and sometimes it doesn't feel like you're making any progress but you'll get there if you keep at it! For a beginner it can make a huge difference using higher quality lures like mepps or rapalas. If you think they're small fish, real worms are the best bet.

On your fishing attempt. the "pre-rigged bait you used with the silver blades hanging on it is called a spinner bait. It is not meant for just throwing it out and letting it sit, you have to cast it out then reel it back in, the blades spin in the water as you reel it in, and it flashes to catch the fish's eye. If you're going to fish the way you were, then I recommend getting some bait, worms or minnows, and using a bobber or float until you learn some more.

I am sure other people have said this or you already know but live worms are very good at catching fish, especially when the lure / jig approach is not working as those require a lot of technique to move them through the water. I recommend a small ledger weight and a small hook with a live worm or something real.

It doubles your chances, and remember, 2 is 1 and 1 is none (same for water and fire starters). Hang food higher suspended from cordage between two trees (bears can climb trees). Burn food and/or garbage, do not keep garbage in camp, and wash dishes in the water. Hope you fare well.

A very trustworthy lure I always catch multiple on when I go out is a mepps thunder bug! Swear by it. Other inline spin baits work great, or powerbait on a Texas rig are the two easiest ways to get ‘em without learning fly fishing. Really liked the video! For lake fishing try using a live worm and a bobber with a little split shot weight in between the worm and bobber with about 12-18 inches in between the worm and bobber. You will catch them all day. A diagram for this setup in words looks like this: bobber, six inches of line, split shot, 6inches of line, hook with live worm. If you want to eat the fish and don’t plan on putting it back have a rock on hand. Smack the fish head with the rock and knock it out then cut the gills. You don’t want blood to stay in the system makes it taste not as great. If you don’t want to keep the fish wet your hands before you touch the fish. Helps prevent taking off the slime coating that protects the fish from getting sick. If you forget don’t worry to much it will just become part of the life cycle and something will eat it if it passes on.

I always use a size 8 hook and fly fish as well. The Powerbait that is a puddy works well. You can fish bottom with a slip sinker and regular sinker. The slip sinker let's the bait float up a few feet to get it off the bottom.

watching this, and seeing your ketchup and mustard mix, it reminded me of a time I went solo camping and used empty mio comtainers for my condiments, hard to use all the condiments but easier to get on my bread
