*FAQ:* ▪Again, this was *NOT my bike.* It was a press bike from Honda, that I was borrowing, I could not have put engine guards on it myself. * I KNOW Engine Guards are good* , you'll see that I have them on my own bike in other videos of the CB500x. ▪I DID have the parking brake on, you'll notice once I get the bike up the tires stop moving. Yes, I know about the front brake trick. I thought the parking brake would be enough to keep the wheels from moving. As it only took me one try to lift the bike even though the wheels moved, it wasn't imperative to me to put it back on the ground to pick it up "the right way" again. ▪I could not put the bike in gear, it is a DCT -hence the parking brake- ▪Trying to say this bike is "too heavy" for me because I crashed after clipping a rut, is not a logical argument, as even people on tiny dirt bikes crash after clipping a rock or a rut in the wrong way. I picked the bike up alone, I will ride what I want Thanks. ▪Why would I leave the luggage on to pick up a motorcycle? Seems silly to pick up more weight than you have to in any situation.
So my wife got me watching your videos. and every week you impress me with how tough you are and how much grace you show, and your grace is showing again in this post. Stay Strong!
Oh goodness aren't those comments annoying!? The 'I'll tell you what I would've done' from the comfort of my couch!? You made the best choices as they appeared to you at the time and had an adventure.
you know something iv been riding since i was 7 years old im now 60 ,the way you handled the situation was truly awesome and inspiring , i admire your adventure spirit , as i say to all i meet on bikes always read the road ahead on /off road ,ride safe , bless
Amanda, that's the first reference to "eye migraine" I have heard. I was telling my optometrist about my bouts where my pupils dilate, my vision blurs, and I get "dazed and confused". She told me it was a rare symptom of a migraine. I'm glad you weren't badly hurt.
Just glad you're doing OK and made it safe with out breaking yourself . Bikes can be fixed or replaced but people don't heal as fast as ordering new parts.
The sheer joy you shared upon lifting that bike, just awesome. You are such an intrepid and courageous explorer. Big props to you Amanda, so much admiration for you.
I get ocular migranes too. There is no pain until the geometric shapes disappear, then mostly just a slight headache. The real problem is, there are blind spots in your line of vision. First one happened when I was on a 30 foot ladder when I was in my 30’s. I’m mid 60’s now and probably have had 25 or so over that period of time.
Glad you're alright after the AT went hard over. I enjoy watching your videos and your channel helps people like me that are new to adventure riding to become better prepared for the whole experience. Keep up the good work.
I have been through Thermopolis several times including this past summer and I never knew about their dinosaur museum. Thanks for bringing this to our (my) attention. 👍👍👍
So even though it sucks to eat it, I still think this was a very positive video for a few reasons: First, the point you made about listening to your inner voice is so true. Tons of times I have ignored it or gone offroad when feeling foggy or not 100% and have usually gotten myself into trouble. Second, despite eating it, you got up, got back on and completed that leg - which is always a positive in my book. And despite the cosmetic damage, the AT shows it can take some bumps and keep going for sure (outstanding bike). I switched over to an ADV bike 2 years ago and I ride offroad a pretty decent amount now, and eating it occasionally is just part of it - fixing the damage is too (I am on my 3rd set of plastics on my T7! lol). End Screen - I think I would definitely say the WYBDR especially from your riding footage - absolutely stunning. Great post as usual.
@@AstheMagpieFlies This was a timely video for me. I just completed the intro course at Rawhyde Adventures in Southern CA so I could gather sufficient skill to hit some BDR's next year with my 1250GSA. I dropped in training doing technical turns 4 times over the weekend and now have bruises in places that didn't hit the ground. But like you, the experience is worth the incidents. You just have to ensure you stop if your body is telling you to and don't hesitate to get back on the bike once your are ready. Love your channel and thanks for the view into your adventures!
This video really resonated with me. I rode my GS on some remote trails in NE Wyoming in September and found where my grandparents homesteaded 100 years ago. Thoughts of getting injured that far from any other human definitely crossed my mind. The landowner knew i was there, but I felt very alone. I managed to keep the bike right side up and was glad I made the trip. Coincidentally, I stayed in the same room in Thermopolis in 2017.
RU-vid is like that, suddenly something comes up that you "fall" into. Today it was your channel. Despite your overturned driving, the rest was nice to watch so I'm sticking around!😉 I sometimes also suffer from migraines with a halo and some hearing loss and wouldn't want to drive then, hope your body feels better and I look forward to new adventures on the channel.🏍️👍
Glad to hear that injuries were light from the crash and that the bike exited that event with minimal damage. Really nice video w amazing scenery. Thanks.
Kudos for staying optimistic and unfazed in the face of adversity. I’ve had similar experiences and it really shakes your confidence. But you kept going!
Great video and excellent work picking up the AT. I have the same one AS ES DCT - most of the time I need help picking it up and I am 200 pounds and pretty solid. So she did an amazing job.
Cross rutting is how I've crashed my AT, at least so far. In my view, you did everything right for your situation at that time, no need to explain yourself to anyone. These bikes are heavy and you're a tough young lady. Keep the awesome content coming......
Really sorry about your spill and hope you are feeling better. This was one of your best and most enjoyable videos so far. Really enjoyed the clip on the dinosaur museum and the information on route 20 which is the way I want to go when I make it out there. Again, excellent video!
Ride alone? Dive alone? It’s a way of life for me, I just don’t enjoy the experience as much with others most times. When you are exploring, if you don’t have great chemistry with your adventure partner then it’s a stressful experience. I think I’m much safer alone as well since I don’t have help from others readily available. I can’t say it’s the best way to travel but, it’s a great time. Glad you are safe.
Enjoyed the video. I would love to see you go back to WY and complete the full BDR in one trip. Answer: The Grand Tetons! Images from that range make my ❤ skip a beat! I believe it would be a spiritual experience.
Ouch 😣 scary fall, sucks the bike was damaged but I’m glad YOU are OK and the bike started back up and kept going and got you to safety. Unfortunately going down off road just happens way too easily.
Glad you made it through that unscathed! Well maybe lightly scathed ;) crazy I had an ocular migraine this afternoon and found myself watching your video tonight! Thankfully don't get them often and they are NO fun!
I'm looking at doing the Wybdr in summer of 2023. I live 20mins from section 4 (Alcova area) love my home state of Wyoming. I wouldn't wanna live anywhere else.
Nice video, beautiful landscapes, perfect bike for these trips. You are very good and very strong, if you can lift the bike. On the bag of soup was written minestrone, in Italian. 😜
OMG! Not an ocular migraine. My 1st FREAKED ME THE F OUT! Thought I was going blind. The aura subsided about 15-20 minutes later. The ones I’ve had never came with pain. Sorry yours do 😢 Love your content, happy trails to you 😊
Thanks Sean! I get the bright kaleidoscope in the dead center of my vision, that lasts about an hour, but when it goes away the pain starts with vengeance and lasts about 6-8 hours lol pain meds help dull it a bit but ya it still sucks
Ouch! 45MPH at the start of that. I suspect you were going faster than 25 when you hit - not fun. I think it's happened to almost everyone who goes on gravel at some point - I was lucky, and mine was much slower. So happy you came out the other end, mostly unbroken - body or spirit!
Thank goodness your crash wasn't too serious. Glad to see that you were able to "get back on the horse". Thank you for once again sharing great rides, beautiful places and lessons learned. You truly are an inspiration for the rest of us.
I just did my first solo motorcycle camping trip and it was definitely a scary experience doing it on my own, so I commend you for your efforts to reach the places that you've been able to solo. Very inspiring! 😄
nice to see your journey, you are a brave girl, tour alone and hard ways, and you also a migraine patient too, i am a healer whould love to heal you with my distance healing whenever you need
I always worried about going down on my solo rides, I have a big top-heavy cruiser and I am not set up to go off the paved back roads. At 5'10" about 185 lbs with bad knees, back & wrists just lifting the bike up is a nightmare for me alone nowadays. Before there were Google maps, Garmin, GPS units, etc. I didn't worry much about it. Now I do! My next bike will be 500-700cc lower and much lighter. Looks like you have all the right safety emergency items.
Dang that was a heck of a fall. Glad you are relatively okay. I think you handled the fall better than a lot of people I have seen, either the power of editing helped or you just really didn't throw a fit😄. Almost as if you, as an experienced ADV rider, have already accepted that eventually the bike will go down and it's really no big deal as long as you are good. Personally I would have cussed a bit and laughed it off. I have had to help my buddy pick his AT/AS up a couple times and that said, you did awesome in getting that beast back upright. I have the same bike but manual transmission.
lol no fit thrown, the only thing missing was the 15 minutes I laid against the bike waiting for the adrenaline to go away and making sure I didn't break any bones lol Thanks BigDave!
Wow Amanda, so glad that you weren't hurt in that drop. Those are the ones that can often break a collar bone. I just wanted to jump into my tv and help you pick it up. Typical that other riders arrived after you'd picked it up! What an incredible place to ride though, just absolutely stunning in both the dirt and sealed road sections. That app you use looks brilliant. Do they have the same features for Australia do you know? That dinosaur centre was very cool! Awesome video Amanda! Take care of yourself!
Anyone else CLAP and CHEER out loud when she lifted that bike?? Amandam this is one of your best storytelling videos I've seen of yours YET!! Super captivating!
When I was just out of high school I had migraines for quite a few years. Sometimes I would have to lay over the bed backwards with my head hanging down. That would help or I would put my face into something cool like carpeting of course back then it was shag carpeting. And this time went on I kind of learned how to help the situation I would visually see my brain in flames. I've told this to several people and most people think I'm nuts. But I would take that visual in my brain of my brain in the flames and rise it up out of the flames about the same time closing my eyes and altering the pressure only with the closing of my eyes. Not touching them. And the headache would go away. Since then I've gotten better at least I think I have I've also had the feeling of being thrown in a dryer or washer I think that's something to do with my inner ear but I'm not sure in that case I would close one eye and this is happened while riding my motorcycle. And that helps the balance situation. I hope that helps it's probably not for everybody and maybe it's only for me I don't know I know we're all different, but we're also very connected and very similar. 🖖🏍️🙏🤗
Amanda, I'm always amazed at the times I go down, often NOT on the worst of the roads, but just in the moment of surprise. Plastics can be fixed/repaired/replaced. The bike is a tool to be used for its intended purpose, not a prize to be mounted on a trailer, perfectly clean and polished. You owned it. You admitted the "kerfuffle" and even included the video. Kudos to you for your honesty and transparency. I am now a Patreon of your channel. I also love the BDR routes.
So glad you were not hurt more seriously. That was not a good view of you going down. You are a very experienced rider and did your homework for safety but I still wouldn’t ride the backcountry by myself but it will probably happen one day. Love your videos
Awesome recovery! I don't do anything rough and remote on my Super Tenere solo. Too old at 64 to pick it up so I'll ride my WR250R for anything remotely tough. Great video
Thanks for sharing! I think an important lesson learned from this video is to always be prepared for an accident/drop especially when riding offroad often. I think all "adventure" motorcycles that are ridden offroad should have crash bars installed. The investment pays for itself the very first drop or serious fall. Replacing plastics and OEM hardware such as turn signals can be costly on adventure bikes. I know crash bars don't always protect everything all the time but 95% of the time they do their job very well.
Wow, that looked like a hard fall. Glad there were no injuries to you and the bike survived with only superficial wounds. All around great video. I have a gear question. What kind of bar mitts are on the AT? How do you like them. I ride a 500X in NE Ohio as long as the roads are mostly dry, the temps are above freezing, and until the snow flies. I'm looking for a way to keep my fingers warmer. Stay safe.
I felt that fall from the moment the back end started to dance all the way until the bike decided to take a nap on you. It certainly looked like you hit pretty hard. Glad you recovered relatively unscathed. Hell of a job picking up that heavy bike. Love your videos. Always inspiring.
Thank you very much! Not Pictured: Me laying against the bike for a solid 15 minutes making sure nothing was broken and waiting for my adrenaline to go away 😂
@@AstheMagpieFlies Laying against the bike for 15 mins 'cause no one else was around to see you? I find if I've got an audience you pick the bike up with extra powers 'cause of the embarrassment factor. Fantastic effort!
That definitely sounded like a solid landing of the not so good variety. 😕 Happy to see you moving about afterwards. 👍🏼 Ah, that little voice that says 'you're fine, you can do this, get going' can be a great motivator to the positive. And then sometimes its just a little f#€ker messing up your day. 🤷🏻♂️ It's hard to tell in the moment and can deceive you after the fact. Neat dinosaur museum! ❤📷🏍💕
I’m glad you weren’t hurt any worse than you were. Did your Migraine go away with the trauma of the crash? I’ve only had one migraine or migraine like headache, which was during finals week in college. There was no way I could have ridden a motorcycle with that level of pain. I live in Wyoming and I was in Teton NP looking at leaves last month. Wyoming isn’t all prairie. Safe travels and keep the shiny side up!😎👍
Unfortunately the migraine did not go away after the crash lol I wish! I did go away once I got to Wind River Canyon (which is kind of on par for my pattern of the pain lasting about 6-8 hours) Funny enough my migraines also started in College, mine are stress triggered
Most would never show their falls but hats off to you, true to life events will happen and shared troubles are half troubles,,,,, lot of others would still be lifting the bike and u did it in one take,,,, not arm wrestling you ever lol,,,, what make helmet by the way looks great
I really enjoy watching your videos. I like the pace, agreeable and down to earth, calm and authentic. Thank you for sharing! Greetings and best wishes from Switzerland - safe ride! ✌️🏍️
The Twin is a big bike. You should ask Honda to lend you the Transalp when they come out. Their 300L Rally will do everything well except for high speed interstates and weighs a little over 300 lbs. You might consider that too. Enjoyed your video.
Are you new to the channel? Lol 😂 because I'm not sure you're aware that I ride 80% Slab. So no. I don't think the 300 Rally would be "good" for me. I love the Twin. I think it's perfect for what I do.
@@AstheMagpieFlies It's heavy. I'm mostly road too but I do go off road and when I do I'm glad to be on the 300L Rally. The new Transalp will be 750cc weight with 90 or so HP. Better bike for you. Promise.
Thank you for a very telling video and lesson on riding when you're not at your best. Glad to see you're able to recover from your migraine. On our Great Divide trip in August 2022, I woke up in Yellowstone with severe vertigo. I had to crawl to the picnic table for breakfast. Recovered enough to ride around Yellowstone that day (still not fully recovered). Should have stayed in camp, but pride and not wanting to hold my partner back, headed north. 2 days later, probably from the vertigo symptoms, I had a get off resulting in being unconscious for 6 minutes. Thank goodness my brand new NeoTec saved my head and face. Released from hospital that day, back to Afton, WY, then foolishly continued on resulting in a 2nd crash/concussion and ending the trip. This was a hard lesson for me and my riding partner: If anyone in your group has an illness/condition that affects their riding.....DON'T RIDE!!!! It's not worth saving a trip at the expense of potentially screwing up yours for the rest of you life! Fortunately I've recovered.
We share migraines and motorcycling, and you're right. They don't mix. One's brain doesn't work, but it still send signals to your body, which it sometimes follows and sometimes ignores. Safety first!
Comment at about 7:30 - you forgot to list the second question that goes through your mind right after falling down - right after "'is anything broken on my body?" comes "did anybody see that?" Also: nice Segway into OnX commercial :0)
Incredible how organized you are. Went from France to China with a little honda 125 cc, I didn't give news to anyone, didn't have any satellite phones, nothing lol. My phone was barely charged. Well for me adventure isn't adventure if you don't really get in the shit once in a while, so I kind of look for it too.
It is amazing to watch you hit the ground that hard and then have the emotional fortitude and confidence to get back on and finish the trip. Thank you for sharing the experience with all of us.
Ahhh this was so enlightening to watch-thank you for sharing!! Coming from someone that's only ever ridden street and VERY interested in touring the BDRs, this kind of knowledge/experience is so very helpful for someone like me! I don't have anyone to teach me the ways of touring, so I find videos like yours so encouraging! Way to kick ass in a situation like this SOLO. It takes courage to see all of the positives from learning opportunities, instead of seeing them as reasons to quit-you're one tough cookie!👏🏻🔥 As always, wonderful story-telling and editing Amanda! Your videos help me get through the cold winter months!😊 Ride safe, and hope you've healed up since this video was filmed🙏🏻
Wow that was quite the gnarly crash! My heart was pounding watching that, I think most of us have had that experience of slow motion whilst waiting to immenently hit the floor, to then quickly check that all our limbs are still attached XD. Glad to hear you were okay :)
The pure joy of picking up the bike, awesome!! So glad for you that you were fine Amanda. Thank you also for this video, this is an amazing wake up call for so many riders out there, specially the minutes where you share how much you plan in advance and how to inform your family and keep them update, well done!! 👍👍
Hey Amanda, Glad to hear for the most part you're alright. Yep, always listen to your inner voice. Like so many when I ignored mine, down I went. Thanks for the beautiful views and Prayers Flying for safe travels!
I have a 22 AT AS. I'm 5'8 and 160lbs. The bike is remarkably easy to pick back up. I saw the comment pinned. I was really glad I had lower engine guards and steel cases when I crashed. The only damage was trashing the mirror, which is cheap to replace. People saying negative about it, I've only ever owned 250's and its a very easy bike to take on honestly. The hardest part is learning the 5,000,483 buttons and options.
You did it. You lifted the Africa Twin by yourself. Good on ya. it's not what happens to you, it's how you handle it. Got to love Honda reliability. Mine's a Transalp. Kiaora.
I'm so glad you came thru that with as little injury as you did. My heart sank just hearing the immediate aftermath of your drop. 😩 Wonderful music, by the way. 😊
You make great moto-travel content and put heart and soul (and some dirt!) into your videos. A pleasure to watch, very well done. I have a question; do you have a process for searching for areas to visit with each place you go to? Such as the dinosaur museum, is it just google, or do you recommend any apps for finding the "best" and off the beaten path places to visit? Thanks.
I got very sick on the road once. I had to cut my trip in BC shorter. Didn't get to see everything I wanted. Since, I always plan an extra day for long trips just in case. If nothing happens, I have a rest day for exploring or I can just get home early. Beautiful video, by the way. They get better every month since the beginning.
I think there is hope.for me when a rider and traveler such as magpie knows this driving with a sickness was a mistake still pushes through and does a nasty mistake. We all do it but seeing magpie do it to, gives me hope. 😄 🤣
One interesting aspect about motorcycle riders on these trails - you can't easily make horror movies about encountering adventure bike riders while alone in the wilderness. My guess is that when trouble strikes, people will always be relieved to see them in one way or another. Glad you and your Twin were okay - I was t-boned by a truck on mine (same bike) and it still worked well afterwards. Go Honda!
Great Video. I know I have said this before but Firstly this is why Amanda recommends..... ATGATT DUH. Secondly Kudos for getting that scooter up from it's dirt nap. I am not at all certain I could do that. This is one reason, due to my disability, I choose to ride mostly slabs and improved gravel roads. Such as inside a campground or access to camping. Thirdly I have always loved the way you show the good, the bad, the fun, etc. I guess what I am saying I appreciate your example. E.S.C. ? As I have only driven straight through Wyoming I want to to ALL of the places.... Cheers🥃🥃
Glad that you came out of that get-off in “good” condition. Very well discussed about the snowball affect of having a migraine, and how it led to your day’s events. Thanks for sharing.
