It's 76.2 miles from Oconee State Park to Table Rock State Park. That's like 3 marathons back to back! It's not easy, but it's worth it. I hope you enjoy my week long adventure on the Foothills Trail

I sort of did that in the trail journal on my blog. (link in the description) I also have a "5 tips for doing this hike" video! As for resupply, I decided to carry the whole week's worth of food. Folks typically leave a food cache at the halfway point. I didn't want to risk a bear getting to it before I did 😅😉

Your shots were so creative like the underwater shot of you scooping water. Your editing was awesome. Loved the selfie montage at the end. Sorry about the late reply RU-vid has been dumping random comments in "Held for review" jail 🤨 It depends if you want to feel like you can take on ANYTHING that comes at you then the Art Loeb. If you want a gradual introduction to the challenges of long distance backpacking then Foothills.

Thanks for that tip about the baking soda! The worst part of my FHT hike (which was my 1st longish distance hike, too) was how bad my clothes smelled. Putting on my wet, stinky hiking clothes each morning was super demoralizing. The endless stair-climbing was nothing compared to the unrelenting stench of my hiking shirt.
@SeagrasstoSassafras
@SeagrasstoSassafras 3 года назад
🤣 YES! The hiker stench gets REAL. It takes more discipline to put your nasty clothes back on than it does to tackle those difficult climbs. Partly why I brought a change for the halfway mark. If I could just hold myself over until then with baking soda 😫

I showed her this video and she loved it and is super excited to go too! We love the gnome build story :-). Now we start our training. We live in SC too, so it makes it for easy access to some good trails. So the sit pad that you used that was outside of your tent too - was that an actual sit pad? It looked comfy. Where is it from?
@SeagrasstoSassafras
@SeagrasstoSassafras 3 года назад
So glad I could help. Funny story, it's not an actual sit pad, even though I use it for that and to keep my pack from getting dirty in the vestibule. You know that stuff people use to line their kitchen drawers? That's what it is. A whole roll of it is like $5. I cut it to size, it's SO lightweight and compact, and if something happens to it there's no major loss. I can make another. It is made of very thin foam but it's surprisingly durable!

Thank you so much! That's so awesome. I say this a lot but I LOVE hearing about parents introducing their kids to backpacking. Y'all are going to have an incredible adventure!! So this trip was actually my first time using a wood burning stove. After a whole week with it I gotta say I love my isobutane stove more. There were several nights where I couldn't find any dry sticks (or enough to get the water boiled) and ended up with cold half rehydrated meals. It's a very cool concept and does save on weight BUT I found more things went wrong than right with it and after a long 15 mile day it's not what I wanted to deal with. That's not to say I don't plan to use it again, just not on a long trip where I need a consist supply of fuel. I hope that helps!

Even better...some friends and I were eating in restaurant in Clayton some years ago after paddling the river and we got to meet the guy who was the young banjo player in the movie... he was actually working in the kitchen at the restaurant! True story! Love the Foothills trail...a friend and I had the great idea to try and fast hike/run the entire trail in one push...we made it 50 miles in 20 hours before crying uncle! Another great trail up there is the Chatooga River trail...45 miles and follows the river for the most part. Did that last year with my old dog (15 years old at the time) and unfortunately will be our last long distance hike together... she just can't handle the miles anymore. Enjoyed seeing your hike!... hope you have many more great adventures ahead...

That's so cool! Ha, well I'm glad you got over halfway through at least. Can't say there's anything that would motivate me to try that... well, maybe a family of persistent bears. I've only been between the FHT and Ellicott Rock section of the Chattooga trail. I was thinking about taking my other dog Barrett on it this year. Happy to know it's good for four legged friends, especially a senior one. I'm so sorry to hear she won't be joining you on anymore adventures like that, but it sounds like she's had a good run :)

Barrett should love it... Smoky (my old girl) had a pretty rough time...I had to pick her up like fifty times a day to help her over trees and rocks so we went pretty slow. She can still canoe camp though and we've got some more adventures planned coming up. Enjoyed your FHT doc... really well done!

Nice video. I tried out the Odysee site. Do you have to create a login to watch videos there? I tried to watch your gear storage video but couldn’t get it to play. Any pointers? Thanks

Hey. From what I understand you don't have to create an account to watch. I've been having a lot of issues with uploading and viewing videos myself lately. I'm not sure if it has to do with their servers or what. I'm sorry if that wasn't much help, that's one of the reasons why I keep utilizing RU-vid.

What pair of shoes did you use?
@SeagrasstoSassafras
@SeagrasstoSassafras 3 года назад
I wear a pair of "barefoot" shoes I found on Amazon. They're pretty much durable water shoes. I did a review of them last year ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pmpi5XzAykM.html The links to where you can find them are in that videos description. Hope this helps!

@@SeagrasstoSassafras It does. Am a current convert to barefoot shoes, and mildly surprised that my feet survived a climb up a rocky hill. As in sharp rocks.

Right! Barefoot shoes took me some getting used to but it's pretty crazy how feet will adjust to the change.

Haha! See, one of the many handicaps of being a woman is we're notoriously not funny. That's why my husband writes all my lines ;) So glad you enjoy the channel. BTW I love that trail name. Absolute GOLD!
