Solo Overnight in ‘Glow in the Dark’ shelter

I built a shelter from a glow in the dark crazy fort den building kit and slept in it overnight. I used a transparent tarp to protect me from the elements and created a tunnel-like shelter from the kit. I get a fire going, cook a US Military MRE and camp out under the stars.

This shelter frame system is a fine idea. A few years ago, I did something similar for my twin five-year-old grandchildren. As with your family, they LOVED it! I used larger PVC piping and a variety of PVC joints to provide a more robust series of structures. I also needed to glue some tubular joints to prevent the works from flexing and sliding apart. I found the 'tarp' or whatever was an important structural element: the edges needed to be fastened down in some fashion that would last. I used grommets and pegs. For cold weather use, I lined a fairly large welding tarp with Reflectix to make the most of a (somewhat) long fire with a back screen. MY preferred structure was a low Baker-style frame. An A-Frame style worked as well.

Constructing triangles and forming them into a geodesic dome might be the strongest structure you can make with that stuff. It would certainly be stronger than linked squares. You'd need a bigger tarp, of course.

Not sure if anyone has said this yet but most glow in the dark plastic products require some form of “charging” so to speak. Sit them in the light for a few hours and then they glow in the dark. If you pitched this straight away in the dim woods, wouldn’t have charged much to glow much.

Dont know if you've done this but in the late 80s/early 90s we used to have this thing called a 'WendyHouse' which was basically a play tent. Made up of plastic poles and a cloth or plastic based cover/tarp thrown over it that normally looked like a house - hence the name. I dont know if you can still get them but it might be fun to see you try spending the night in one or throwing the cover away and throwing a tarp over the frame. If you could buy two wendyhouse kits and link them together, you'd have an absolute mansion! They used to be sold at places like Toys'R'Us and Argos. T.R.U are obviously long gone by now but Argos and other toy stores similar to T.R.U might still stock them.

To create more headroom you could have used your extra sticks to raise the frame (posts) and embedded the legs of your cot into the earth a bit. It'll definitely be interesting to see what you can build with it. Especially with enough tarp to properly cover the structures.

You should have brought a uv bar light with you, then you shine it all around the structure real quick (shouldn't take much)- that's when it glows but it doesn't last long or get very bright from just regular fire/torch light and it gets dark when the sun goes down so slowly that you never really get the effect from normal sunlight. Still neat though!

You would need to leave the parts out in the light for longer to "charge" them. I would suggest a geodesic but you'd have to have some different length poles, if the ball angles allow for triangles. Some longer poles for angles and rigidity would be beneficial for the kit as a general improvement to give kids more options. Could you recommend an alternative to the bed as one tigis don't seem to be doing them anymore? Cheers,Mike.

@TAOutdoors, Lots of the 'glow-in-the-dark' types of products need to be exposed to sunlight, or bright lights, for a period of time to really set the glow effect in motion. You didn't really have a long exposure in the light. Lay them out in the sun all day before bringing them to the site, might make a huge difference.

As someone who was in the US Army from 98 to 06, I don't know if I recall these MRE's you've shown. Maybe just dressed up for civvy use though. The heater and stuff seems authentic enough. You were overfilling the water btw...you put the food in before you add water and then set it up somewhere at a 45 degree angle or a bit less to cook. It's not that bad to overfill...but it doesn't heat up the same or as well if there's too much water...so with some packs it won't cook right. You should look up the ranger cookie recipe you make from the MRE drink pouch and give that a try. I never got around to it myself, but it's supposedly an experience.
