Corporal, your audio is-a-foul, for the first 4 minutes of the video; barely audible. FYI. Yeah, rewatch please, there's issues with the mic, perhaps, because the audio is off as your hanging the tarp also.
@@lifesadventureskeepingitre1180 because the plastic wont go out a burnning piece of wood might quit spazzing about the enviorment you shoud see what they do in other countries
Funny story about spending a fortune on gear... We had scout backpacks. $70 to $100. At an event a guy had a $500 pack and was disappointed and felt ripped off because his pack wasn't as good as ours. Just a consideration, you don't have to start with every great gadget and a costly pack. I also had the bag in this video and it went on many trails for many years. Scout gear, military gear well they are made to take a beating as is some of the Trail goods from Walmart.
@@alexanderjosefsson4729Indeed. I avoid nearly everything that says "military grade" on it. It just says: The very cheapest way to (probably) fulfuill the task. Does not have to be bad, but surely is not good. The definition of "mediocre". 👍🏻
My current backpack is off Amazon even after having multiple military surplus backpacks it is the best yet. I think it is a cheap twenty to thirty dollars backpack with compression and attachment straps and a compression zipper on back pocket, a hydration bladder pocket, kidney pads and waist straps, water proof interior and exterior, a hydration tube hole, a chest strap, etc.
Just want to comment on how I truly appreciate the consistency and reliability of your Sunday videos. You have been Old Faithful to your schedule and I don't think you get as much credit as you should for your dedication to your channel and your viewers. Much respect Sir. Thank you!
Up until this week, I used an 8x10 poly tarp much like you showed. Never thought about the Y branch. Now I am using a bushcraft spain oilskin tarp. Buy once cry once. Always get some great ideas from you. Thanks for that.
Tea bags. Small, lightweight, and if you are already boiling the water to disinfect, just drop the teabag in at the end, and you get disinfected tea! Especially good if the water in question has a bad taste.
I really like the new format of multi part videos, giving a really thorough, in depth review of items in one vid, and putting them into action in the next.
While not top notch, Mountain House foods aren’t terrible. They’re extremely light and packable. Anyone who has been in the woods knows how hungry you can get, and you’ll be glad to eat even average food.
Thanks for another great video. One thing most people seem to misunderstand or are afraid of is cost of getting gear. This helps show it doesn't take a lot to get a good starting pack. You can always upgrade as you go.
We used the hook & fork branches during tree work all the time, especially while land clearing. You make a good 10-15 foot branch, 1 hook 1 fork. Cut the base of all the pricker bushes, ball it up & hook it. Drag it to the chipper, unhook & use the fork to push it in. If the hook or the fork gets pulled into the chipper it's no problem, just make another. Works awesome, never even have to touch the thorns.
Hey Corporal Kelly, loving your videos man, been on your email list for years now and Im proud to say i watch every single one of your videos and I enjoy every one! Thank you for doing what you do and thank you for your service
Old order of the arrow books from the boyscouts can provide all this for approximately $3. All this equipment means nothing if you are bitten by a snake, spider, scorpion, attacked by wolves, bears, or the blood sucking insects.
Thanks. Appreciate your newest endeavor. Gotta say a ton of usefull information is available on your page, Dave Canterbury, Grey Bearded Green Beret, and associates!
Oh no.. the iodine tabs. Boyscouts all over again. They work good tho but that taste in a metal canteen will never come out of my mouth haha. PS I used to put Tang into my canteen (Bad idea kids, you get cramps if hiking) but it made it taste better even if it was very diluted tang
Great video series! This is how one relates to the average American camper. I do enjoy watching TheOutdoorGearReview channel as well, but looking at the prices of the gear he uses, he must be made of money. On the other hand Shawn, I really enjoy the simplicity of your videos and it makes a happy meeting point between bushcrafting and camping. Keep up the good work!!!
Regarding the iodine purification tablets; the vial of neutralizing tablets sold with them really work. Just wait 45 plus minutes for the iodine tabs to do their job and then add the neutralizing tabs. No bad taste at all.
Alot of Walmart stores also have the boy scout style thin Ozark trail SS cook sets, my son loves it and they go anywhere from 10 to 12 bucks yes they are stainless steel yes they come with a plastic cup, they have a ss plate and they have a little ss pot with a lid, also the main body is a frying pan. it's not huge by any means but it's a great little kit for one person. Again the metal is thin don't heat it without food in it or water in it use your brain and it will be a sweet little kit. The frying pan handle is to what closes the whole kit together with the plate holding the rest of it and a little small package as well. I used it on a few trips to see if it was worthwhile and if you take care of it, it will be pretty neet cook set that will last a long while on a budget.
I always hit like right after I hit play. I'm not a real fan of burning plastic, but in dire circumstances you have to do what works. I appreciate that you aren't married to any ideals except practicality. I have yet to say WTF at any of your content, and I think it's been 3 years since I subscribed.
I think brand name (as long as it represents quality) is crucial for a few items, for longevity. Knives: quality often means longevity, edge retention. Footwear, again I think quaility is better. But a lot of other stuff brand name may be nice but not mandatory. Thanks for the video.
The first thing I did when I graduated boot camp is go buy a pair of quality boots that were regulation. After the military I started buying hand made boots. Luckily I live fairly close to the hub of boot heaven. I’m about an hour away from Whites, Nicks, Jk, and Franks. Well worth the $. I have 20 years on one pair (several resoles in that time) they are due for a full rebuild now, but prior to that I could destroy a $280 pair of Danners in 6 months.
And I have all but Franks, I’ll be getting some of those soon. My Nicks are from the era that Frank ran Nicks though. I also have Whites packs and Hoffman packs, I’d say my favorites are the Hoffmans, great support and very warm. Rebuildable as are all of these brands. My favorites of the work boots are the JK’s
Good video again today, Sean In fact, I think your narrative today about the RU-vid channel was some of your most informative and positive. Let’s be honest, you know you are an expert at what you do and you are not doing just because you are kind hearted. It’s a business. You’re best when you stick with your educational material and worst when you bitch that know one is watching; hence, not making money. Today was different. You tied it all together and didn’t make your problems the viewers problem. Good luck with the new venture. I’m t looks like a winner. That said, I hope Corporals Corner keeps on growing 👍
Hey Corporal Kelly, been a fan of yours for YEARS. I was thinking the other night what if Social media crashes and we no longer have access to your training videos. You should take every video you've ever made and turn them into a DVD box set. Great Christmas gift this year.
A trick I learned was if you wrap a wet bandana around your water bottle and let it sit for a bit, it will make your water cool and refreshing due to the evaporative cooling.
As always, I love your videos. This one is going to be a special save for teaching my kids. Quick chemistry comment: iodine is an excellent way to prevent giardiasis. Adding any type of ascorbic acid (vitamin c) will Kelate the iodine out of solution, after you kill he parasites, and it will remove the iodine flavor. It is also nice to remove the iodine from water before mixing it with starch, as iodine turns black in the presence of starch. (Black ramen noodles?!)
I’d like to see a mini log cabin or survival shelter that could last for weeks or months, that could be built within a few days. Be a great 2-3 video set!!
I wish Mountain House would bring back their Turkey Dinner meal. It was one of my favorites, and the turkey reconstitutes so good. Add some dried cranberries to it and it's Thanksgiving in a pouch!
Hey Brother. Another great no nonsense vid. Brings back a lot of memories of trial and error. Just subbed to SMO. Looking forward to the clips. As always, thanks for all you do. Keep makin em n we'll keep watchin.
Man! Corporal! Do you have steel fingers? You are always burnin the ends of para cord and just wipe it off! It burns the crap out of me! Thanks for your videos...Ol Corporal iron fingers😅
Appreciate you. Brokies like me don't camp for fun. We do it because we can't afford a hotel room or their busted and rotted van "RV" isn't allowed anywhere near where it needs to be park wise. So sometimes these cheap surplus camping techniques help.
Great video as always.... keep up the good work. I've noticed a few people have had a large glass of HATERADE but hey, you're better off without them. Keep it up🫡
Yep, one of the many uses for a plastic stake. Love the vids man & I thank you for your service to this great country. I appreciate your approach towards teaching/training those that would allow themselves to learn from it. I'm not new to camping but the mixture of common sense & experience has taught me allot of things in many of your vids. Just wanted to say thanks for being real.
@@recall5811 No, it's called looking down on someone. In editing the audio could have accidentally been made mono instead of stereo, so yes the audio could have been fixed.
@@recall5811 Now what doesn't make sense is the audio being fixed but not all of it from start to finish. So that's where your comment works. It could have been both to be honest, but fixing the audio would have been a cheaper problem to fix.
