I just got home from doing my first solo over night in the woods. I only took a tarp, some cordage, a small folding saw, black bags to make my bedding, a thin fleece cover, some duct tape, some tin foil and a lighter. I had a thermal farmer style jacket and two tracksuits on. I kind of cheated though as i made mince and tatties before i left but heated them up with your hobo style cook in the tin foil. My night went well although my only thing that could complain about was my feat were freezing when i woke up at 6;30am. Next time I'll put on long socks instead of the small trainer socks i had on. The temperature here in Scotland went down to 5 degrees Celsius during the night and the app said it feels like 4 degrees but it wasn't to bad. I really enjoyed myself, in fact it was outstanding AF. I tuned my phone off and watched the stars and fire most of the night until i fell asleep. Its amazing how much your hearing seems magnified when your all alone in the woods surrounded by nature. I've been watching channels similar to yours for a good while now and always wanted to give it a try but watching your many improvised shelters the last we while has inspired me to bite the built and give it a go before the cold weather sets in. I'll be doing it more often from now on for sure and i think next summer I'll even take the kids with me when it's a bit warmer. Keep the videos up pal, there great to watch.

Love the old “web gear”. Not sure why we called it web gear, but that was what we had. About the only new tech in 1980’s US Army was Gortex. Also the poncho was perhaps the most loved of any field gear…..so useful!

So I went back to the build on the side of cliff ( which is a great video and build) to remember what you talked about around the camp fire. What you said is all true. The other tubers on “ bush craft” don’t do anything close to what you do. I have learned so much from watching you and you have a natural way of instruction that can be applied to anyone. I understand how you feel and I wish I could change it. Thank you for sharing your talents and I look forward to your videos every week.

Pretty much the only way I go camping anymore. Myself and one or two of my sons usually, but last two times hit the bank and had all four. Had a poncho shelter, couple of small tarps, and my oldest two have skin shelters they have constructed from last years deer skins. Good times.

Don’t be disheartened, your content showing what basics you need, how to tie knots, and fabricate field shelters has raised my confidence that I’d be able to construct and survive an overnight or two if needed, however no bacon in my get home bag, but two days of life boat rations.

The absolute quickest and most efficient way to get a nice pile of coals whether it's for a quick meal or to get the big stuff lit. Another awesome AF vid Shawn! Ty!

Howdy Corporal. I continue to just love and look forward to your weekly videos! I only wish I knew half of your skills. Yet, I continue to learn more, and get new ideas, with each one you turn out. Good one. I still have that old kit handy. My only criticism? These older bones and titanium knees would find that ground a tad hard. Not to mention getting up and down. Nevertheless, good one! All that stuff is easily kept in a vehicle at all times.

I enjoy your military surplus outings. I.use a lot of military surplus equipment which is tough however heavy to carry. I started years ago using as a kid using stuff from dad ww2 and then using in the army when I got a little older. The boar stew look a lot better then C rations.

Professional indoorsman here and I gotta say, your videos inspired me to try this 'camping' thing and I've never been more happy with something I chose to do on whim. I always see the hoods on the ponchos tied off and I have always wondered when I seen it was wether or not it could be left untied and hanging on the inside for water collection mist or dew frost even if your in an area with abundant water you could use it to put things you might need flashlights and stuff........I haven't ever seen anyone utilize the hood on the poncho as anything more than another tie out point

I think I’ve always carried a tarp & rope in my vehicle. Have used it for a few “day trips” that turned into overnighted!! Never leave home without it. I just need to get better w/ the knots… 👊🏻

Legit question; not criticism: Why do you create a fire ring but overlap your tender over the stones? Is that an intentional goal or is it just something that doesn't matter? Also, I (for one; referring to the cliff video) appreciate different content. Your regular content teaches me and keeps me interested; something new would be a plus. In fact, some of my field gear has been inspired by your channel and recommendations. Coming from a Staff Sergeant with 22 years (still serving), don't worry about what the naysayers say; the phrase "haters gonna hate" comes to mind. As far as algorithms go, all creators seem to have issues with them. I have always gotten notifications for your videos and haven't missed one in over two years, since I subbed. That should be enough for this novel (LOL). I will cut it "short" (too late for that) ..... Just know, there are those that would leave quietly, if you were doing wrong. Those of us that feel that way are still here because of our appreciation for what you do and the knowledge you pass on.

I like the mix of useable mil surplus gear and old school survivalism with modern Bushcraft and occasionally some primitive tech. So many possibilities if you train yourself not to rely on just one system but incorporate several.
