When I left the military, I left with all my ALICE equipment (ruck, LBE, canteens, ammo pouches, field dressing, butt pack, and even a gas mask) plus a bunch of small items like the entrenching tool, k-pot, etc. A couple years later I got a tax refund and on the check was a deduction for $150.00. I got charged for all the gear I never returned. The best $150 I ever spent, lol.

LOL, as I read your entry I was gonna say they’d get round to it. I was a Marine rigger. I controlled a lot of expensive and highly desirable gear like the brown leather jackets with fur collars. We kept a close eye on those I didn’t want to end up paying for any unaccounted. One alone could cost upwards of $300. Semper Fi Sarge Out….

Back in 1989 or '90...we we're going into the field (Camp Pendleton) for 4 or 5 days and knew it'd rain. So we bought a bunch of cans of Scotchguard..and sprayed our shelter halves, 2 or 3 coats....worked like a charm! Water beaded up 'n rolled off. USMC, 1/4, wpns co., 81s plt, 1988-92

Very good video. I was a medic at Ft Stewart and I would go to the field constantly with Charlie company. I was lucky. I drove the M113 ambulance and slept inside on a litter. No shelter half for me. The grunts used to say I slept in a hotel. Great bunch of guys, they took care of their medic. Plus, I was in at the tail-end of C rations which came in a little brown box. The food was in cans. So, in the winter, I would heat up my franks and beans on the M113 exhaust pipe. Nicely heated through but the can was as black as coal from the diesel smoke! Hardcore. Those were the best of times. I have a million stories.

About the trench,I was taught to use the lose dirt to create a berm on the inside perimeter by packing it down. Also,find the lowest level of the area and extend the trench away from the tent by at least 5-6 feet so water drains away and doesn’t pool up. Maybe I’m wrong,but have always done it that way.
@DisgruntledMarineTheGrunt
@DisgruntledMarineTheGrunt 2 года назад
As long as the canvas over shoots the edge of the trench for the most part it's fine, he even said this, and yes you're supposed to extend the trench at the lowest point for drainage.

I love that spoon in your pocket! Brings back memories. You never know how long it will be until you might get a spoon or a P38. C-rations had a wonderful pound-cake. You could use dry dairy creamer (vanilla) or hot-chocolate powder (chocolate) for icing. I would trade fruit-cocktail (too sweet, messy syrup) for pound-cake. Great desert with the Oreo - keep it up.

A "military nostalgia" overnighter, outstanding AF! "Pre-nostalgia" would have involved C-rats...not as big a "menu," but there was always a handful of P-38s, the accessory packs came with a 4-pack of cigarettes and the peanut butter tins were often converted to ashtrays. The damp-proof matches were pretty good, and little stoves were made out of the big cans. The tiny Tabasco bottles were treasure, but near civilization things like herbs and spices could make C-rats pretty tasty. BYOB (bring your own bacon), though...it went well wrapped around the beef patties. Thank you, Corporal, for becoming part of my Sunday routine, and, as always, "rock it like a Corporal!" Edit: what flavor of bug juice did you get?

Back in the late 1970s I was working for the Army as a civilian at the Natick Labs where they were developing the process to make MRES and developing the process to use Radiation to preserve meats and such to be packaged into the meals. We would ship a machine to a meat company as part of the design process every few months so they could process some for sampling by GIs. The Lab also had test chambers that would simulate both Arctic and Dessert conditions for testing uniforms and accommodations for survival. We were also developing equipment to be used for combat by retrofitting existing equipment with newer weapons.Just to give you an idea how “C” rations got replaced. Thanks for another great video. If my memory serves me the soldiers used their ponchos to make each half and slept opposite head to toe to use the space correctly. Even family tent camping we always dug rain trenches around our JC Higgins canvas tents.

Start out with Alice suspenders and the pistol belt. There's a whole lot of stuff that you can hang on various parts of the belt and suspenders, both vintage and repro packs, and various pouches, sheaths and holsters. Not as quick and light as Moly gear, but it works for the purpose.

I was in the Air Cav 84-90 and this gear brings back the memories. Absolutely hatred the tent so most of us had private purchased dome tents. I carried a WW2 era entrenching tool as the handle was so much more comfortable. I've eaten MREs from 2016 with no problem. I still have LRRP rations from the 80s because that's what we ate as well as the old MCI meals and yes we carried tobasco sauce. I carried a sprinkle holder that had multiple compartments so it had salt,pepper, season-all, onion powder, and garlic powder.

This reminds me of the military surplus wall tents we had in boy scouts in the early 1960s. The kids had to pick up these heavy canvas tents and those huge wooden poles. These things were nightmares for 12 year olds. The scout leaders were all wwii veterans and these tents and uniforms triggered something in them, and they expected a lot from us. It was both a privilege and a pain to have them around.

Proof positive that you don't need the latest and greatest to have a good time. But quality does count! Outstanding AF.

You need to teach them how to make coffee with a clean sock. Folks these days will never know the pleasure of C-ration pound cake with white (coffee creamer) or chocolate (hot chocolate) icing. (Or that C-rations used to come with cigarettes.)

There is one guy on the internet who doesnt care about the MRE date. All he cares about is getting it out onto a tray, nice.

Great Video. I never had or even thought of bacon with Mac and cheese. However, it was MREs back in Basic Training that got me to fall in love with Mac and Cheese. Seriously, before I joined the Army I thought it was okay, but afterwards it became a godsend. It's amazing how the military can brainwash you:)

Really enjoy the old school episodes. Nice to see how things used to be compared to the modern ways, makes today appreciate where we are now.

Ahh. The good ole days. Carrying around the shelter half. Back before battle buddies. You never knew who was gonna be on his half. As usual, you instructed perfectly how to set up the shelter half.

Hey dude, I just saw your rant on this video I’m watching where people are messing with you, particularly other bush crafters. I just want you to know, we hear you, but it doesn’t deserve the attention you just gave it. I am military too, and I could tell a true veteran or a poser almost every time. You are no poser. Maybe a little high and tight, but no poser lol. We enjoy you, they don’t matter. We do. We love you man. Keep it ripping brother.
