Solo Survival Movie --- Winter Bushcraft --- Wool Blanket Only (no tent, no tarp, no sleeping bag) 

I am 63 years old and have broken 25 bones had numerous surgeries and I still get out each year for a two week hike and camping trip , but haven't winter camped in maybe 8 years , but after my next and hopefully last surgery I am going with a couple of my sons !

I understand what you are saying. No none of us is perfect, we all have our faults. But when we find that we have fallen down, we need to reach down inside and find the strength to get back up, and continue our journey.

I wish I had the time for a winter forest adventure. Instead I have the honor of preparing my greenhouses for the coming season. The whole day on my knees with no one between me and the good lord. Being in nature is a blessing but it's hard work as well. god bless

In high school survival class we went up to the mountain snow for the afternoon. We got into pairs and were told to dig a snow shelter. After 4 hours very few shelters were complete. So unless you have done it before don’t expect it to be straight forward. There was 1 team that made an amazing cave. Mine never got finished but I got an A. I think that because I made steak stir fry for lunch and shared it with the teacher. :)

I've been struggling lately with loss of my dad, unhappiness in my career and I found this channel as I was discussing with a relative and my wife about finding my true purpose. Being conditioned to the cold is worth at least 10F degrees of "warmth". ever heard of Bill moreland. ? He spent 13 years in the Idaho wilds, in the 1930's. He had nothing more than a single wool blanket, a hunk of tarp, a few hooks and some line, a pocket knife, flint and steel, a skillet, a coffee pot, and the clothes that he stood in! His last 2 years, he'd stolen a single shot 22lr rifle and 50 rds of ammo from a Ranger's cabin. He killed a deer per month with it until the Park rangers FINALLY caught him.. He spent his winters inside of hollow logs. He ended-up pulling some of his own teeth with a slipknot in the fishing line and a springy branch! Prior to the rifle, he'd been taking town phone wire that was strung between the fire towers and snaring deer with it. That's what got the Rangers hunting him I think that some ranger fell sorry for him and left the 22 where he knew Bill would get it He'd made a key that let him get into the cabins and get the food stored there, but there was little such food and it would not be replaced all winter. Today, people "think" that their tough, but the generation of the Depression and WW2 has them beat by a country mile!.

Hatchet. Pocket knife. Bush pot. Wool blanket. And what ever food brought. Not a bad emergency shelter. Good fast fire. On track. At a bad boy center called thistle dew. They give you some snare wire . That very Pocket knife and one can of food. Your out there for one to two weeks. Oh you do get one blanket and that is your haver sack as well. Winter you get a boy scout Hatchet. You are expected to find your food and make shelter. You get graded on your progress. For them it means early release.

snowshoes a must if you go into woods in winter ( areas where it snows ) flashlight important ability to make fire...most important getting out of elements ( wind precipitation ) important I guess if you had good wool blanket it would be big benefit having a pot seems crucial ( hydration) good hearty meal seems important. ..so takeaway is as always GO PREPARED. ( did you know you were in bigfoot area? notice the second tree broken at about 9' ? ...other signs too )

We just lost a young, girl 22 years, avid SOLO hiker out here in California on Mt. Baldy, 10K peak. She set out at 2pm [sunset 5pm], snow with a horrendous rain system rolling in. Family lost contact with her at 4pm and it took a couple days for avalanche conditions to subside and permit SAR to safely go in. Drone operator spotted her body and she was recovered. Probably didn't have skills/knowledge to build a snow cave and get out of the weather.

You forgot to mention warm clothing and boots plus the food you brought with you, a good display of skills though, however it would have been a different story in a heavy snowstorm with driving winds, doable but much more difficult, why I would prefer to always have a large tarp with me. You are younger Doug, wait till you hit 75, that's where I'm at. Sorry Doug, but you have to accept the fact that there are people that are your enemies because they choose to be and would kill you or harm you just for sport, that is something you cannot change.

Trapped AIR is what insulates you from the cold, wind, dampness. The value that wool, goose down, or debris offers you is not in and of themselves. All that such materials can do is hold-apart the membranes that are on both sides of them, so that there's a layer of trapped air all around you. Such materials also prevent air currents moving in the area between the membranes.. A blanket or woobie is MUCH more effective at keeping you warm if you have a non-permeable poncho or tarp around the insulative material. Having a reflective tyvek bivy around you and then a plastic envelope around the bivy, holding those layer's apart with a hammock and two ridgelines, gives you the layer of trapped air, without the bulk/weight of the "stuffings". If you DO stuff dry, soft debris between the bivy and the "envelope', it does help keep you warmer, because such materials help keep down radiant heat-loss.and ensure that the two membranes dont touch, anywhere. The debris also stops air currents from moving between your membranes.

the streams in the mountains are very shallow and freeze solid, so the fish all migrate down to the lakes or they go dormant in the deepest pools that they can find. This makes ice fishing very unlikely to be productive.Fish are 8% bodyfat, (live weight) but to get that fat, you either have to eat the skins and heads, or boil those parts and skim the fat off of the surface of the water, which is difficult to arrange.

Deer have almost no fat on them and in the winter, they have none and their meat is really tough and dry, about 600 calories per lb. You need 3000 calories per day to keep from losing weight, even when just "holed-up" in a shelter Moreland was a small, wiry man, so he had no body fat to lose or to help insulate him from the cold.

👍👍👍 .. nice. A good demonstration of Basic Skills .. the relevant boxes duly ticked 😊. Using existing Natural Features to enhance a Shelter (properly clothed for the conditions, somewhere to sleep on, in and under) .. the '5 C's' .. Shelter / Hydration / Nutrition and with an additiona external Heat Source, all taken care of. That said, to reiterate (even if only to drum it into my my head 😏) .. one should never be caught knowingly or willingly in such situations (or any at that) inadequately prepared. Also, in no way detracting from your, Doug's setup, with the Technology at our disposal in this day and age, it is noteworthy how very little 'additionals' would add value to such a situation .. i.e. .. Tarp, Closed Cell Foam Pad, Fixed Blade Knife, Folding Saw and such. Yes, 'how much is too much' and conversely, 'how little is too little'? All in all, an excellent Post .. and the Words at the end, Inspirational! Thank you for that .. take care ..

You get and Folding saw. make gathering wood easier. good video. But you should had twice the wood.

In a survival situation I would never hand water or snow over my fire. One small bump or wind could put your fire out and wet your wood.

Survived a blizzard at 9000 feet, with my Pendleton wool blanket , tucked under the loading chute in a lonesome corral.

If you're hungry enough it probably doesn't matter though. Anyway, thanks again for the great video. One week to go until my hip surgery. Building shelters takes too much time and calories, and the noise and fire smoke and light are too likely to cause problems with other humans. I've done this sort of thing for real too many times to consider it to be fun. You wont catch me out there unless it's shtf or I'm testing some new item or idea for shtf. When I have adequate clothing, the bivy and plastic envelope are enough for sleeping in any conditions that I'd voluntarily be in. I've found that it doesn't matter if your winter clothing has absorbed a bit of body moisture during the day, IF you have 2 sets of clean, dry, polypropylene longjohns between you and the clothing. I use the wiggy's net longjohns at all times when it's below about 50F, and use the other pairs only for sleeping. /The net longjohns hold your other clothing away from your skin enough to help reduce the amount of dampness that they absorb. Brisk movement is worth nearly 20F degrees, so when I'm not in the sleeping gear and it's cold, I get to hustling. I CAN wear the sleep-shelter gear, either as a poncho or tightly wrapped around me, as another layer of protection. I"m not into sub 0F stuff at all. Cold has very nearly killed me several times, and I'm not giving it another shot at me. Pneumonia killed two of my older brothers.

squat/sit ....put blanket over you with just face out.......put tealite candle between feet....yup....warm as toast... old trick...... yup

Okay, so no mention of how long you were out. Don't get me wrong I appreciate your effort, but sustained survival over a period of time is it true demonstration of skill. I would think snaring rabbits - and hunting in some way other small game, would be a huge part of success for, say more than a week.

Do you teach a class on these lessons? I know I could always use a refresher on this stuff.
