In early June 2021 I set out to thru hike (hiking end to end in one trip) all 114 miles of the Bartram Trail, alone. This video is episode 3, the final episode, of that journey, and covers days 5 and 6, hiking from mile 84.1 at Wilson Gap, to the end (114 miles in total). Waterfalls, cascades, wildflowers, wild blueberry eating - and finally I drop down to the famous, wild and scenic Chattooga River. My hike comes to an end at Russell Bridge along the Chattooga River, but the adventure that is represented in this final episode lives on in my memories, until the next adventure…. Enjoy!

-My Bartram Trail GPX files: This link takes you to the Trip Planners page on my website, where you can find the Bartram Trail GPX files. This includes water and campsite location waypoints that I mapped along the way. You can use these in combination with any GPS map application. I use a free one called Gaia. It works great because I can use it in airplane mode (doesn’t drain my battery) and still know my precise location on trail. unfetteredfoot...
-Gaia GPS: www.gaiagps.com/. Free GPS reader app that I used for this hike (and others).
-Bartram Trail Southern Terminus Parking: goo.gl/maps/TL... . There is another lot on the other side of the bridge on the same side of the road.
-Bartram Trail Northern Terminus Parking: goo.gl/maps/vK.... This is the closest parking lot. You still have to hike 5.1 miles north on the Bartram Trail to get to the northern terminus at the top of Cheoah Bald.
-Alternate Northern Terminus Parking at Stecoah Gap if you hike the Appalachian Trail to the top of Cheoah Bald: goo.gl/maps/sn.... This would be a fun alternate to get to Cheoah Bald.
-Bartram Trail Conservancy: blueridgebartr.... Trail info, volunteer opportunities, and donations to support the trail.
-Nantahala Outdoor Center: noc.com/. Great place to contact for a list of shuttle providers that service the Bartram Trail, as well as a rafting or kayaking adventure on the Nantahala River if you want to add that to your Bartram Trail adventure.
-Wildwater Rafting (Chattooga River): wildwaterrafti... In case you want to add a Chattooga River rafting trip to your Bartram Trail adventure. The Chattooga River bears a Wild and Scenic River designation, is classic southeastern whitewater, and was featured in the 70s film “Deliverance.”
-Chica & Sunset’s Hostel in Franklin: chicaandsunset.... I have not personally stayed here, but always hear great things about them from other backpackers (and they are AT thru-hikers themselves!).

Thanks, Hungry Cat, for all the effort you put into these videos! My first thru hike, earlier this year, was the Foothills Trail - hard to beat the scenery and first-rate trail maintenance. Next up is the Bartram and your videos are by far the best summary. I'm also out of Atlanta. For those considering the Foothills Trail, we hiked it in 5 days/4 nights (~ 15 miles/day) and Taz was our shuttle angel. If you start at Oconee, finishing up at Table Rock allows you to jump in the lake at the parking lot (weather permitting). That was refreshing!

Thanks Ken! I actually hiked the Foothills Trail this past fall, just haven’t finished the videos for it. I would say it is probably the ideal first Thru hike. Bartram Trail is a wonderful trail as well, but less populous than Foothills, so it will make a great follow up. I also hiked from Oconee to Table Rock and used Taz as my shuttle. He was so much fun! Such a great guy. After Foothills I hiked a 40 mile loop around Linville gorge - all forthcoming videos. Been busy as we moved from Atlanta to Wilmington, NC. Enjoy your last day of ‘21 and glad you liked the Bartram series!

Thanks Steve! Happy to share! I have a detailed logistics video coming next week on this one, for those who might want to give the Bartram Trail a whirl.

Hi. Enjoyed this series on the Bartram Trail. I lived in the Cumming, GA area for 22 years before retiring and moving. As an avid hiker, I enjoyed doing day hikes on the Bartram, Benton Mackaye, and AT (I'm also section-hiking the AT, made it to PA). I always enjoyed the this trail because it was well marked, and had nice views (Rabun Bald, Pinacle Mtn, Fishhawk Mtns, Cheoah Mtn, etc.), and there wasn't the crowds as on the AT. RE: Your Pack Sorry to hear about your pack belt breaking. At 71, I typically go for comfort vs. weight, which is why I use an Osprey Aether 70 when backpacking. I want something that is comfortable and will hold up. For a 5-6 day hike, I typically carry around 38-41 pounds. After the first day, I'm normally good with that. Will look at your channel for more hiking videos. You did a good job in filming and narration afterwards! Thanks, and God Bless..

Hungry Cat! Good to see you. My daughter and i met you as you were close to finishing up the Bartram, and we were just getting into it. Tough trail. Worth every step. Great job of your video documentation. Brought back a lot of memories Thanks!

Hey, thanks Peter! I remember you both well! Thanks for the tip about the dead copperhead, btw. I actually wrote about meeting you two on my blog. I wrote two short stories - one about Thru hiking the benton MacKaye trail and another about the Bartram Trail. I release a chapter a week and this coming Monday should be the chapter where I encounter you both and finish up the hike: unfetteredfootsteps.com/blog/. I hope you both enjoyed the hike! A subscriber pinged me to say that he felt like the Foothills Trail would be a better first Thru hike after my logistics video came out. Funny enough, this past weekend/week I hiked the foothills trail for the first time and have to agree. It was absolutely gorgeous, quite well maintained, and full of waterfalls, camping options, and good fun. Sooooo, if you and your daughter haven’t checked that one out, I highly recommend it. A guy named Taz runs shuttles and will set up on-trail resupply for you. It’s a bit shorter at 77 miles. Anyway, throwing that out there for your next adventure! I’ll have a video series coming out on that one and Linville Gorge in the near future. Great to meet ya!

Can you help me? I've tried downloading the GPX file from your website but nothing I do will work. My ad blocker is off, I've tried multiple browsers. I signed up with my email but never received an email link to download it. I'm planning to hike the BT this spring and would really love the waypoints you've made.

Hi Lee, sorry you had some trouble. I don't see your email address so something must have happened. Sometimes the download links get sent to the spam folder, or off the "abyss." If you go to the Contact page on my website and fill out a get in touch form with your name, email, and the trail you want the files for, I'll email them back to you. Link to that page on my website is below. This will be safer than leaving your email as a comment on RU-vid. Glad you are going to give the Bartram Trail a try! It's a fun one.
