I had your symptoms for years, it turns out I was diabetic but it went undetected. For some reason it never showed up in my blood tests, but after a (long) while it finally showed up. The good news is, it is treatable, the bad news is, after years of untreated diabetes it damaged my arteries. Don't be satisfied with just seeing one doctor, seek out different ones until you find out. Please don't leave it until it's too late like I did, I had blind trust in this one medical centre, and this centre had blind faith in their senior partner who misdiagnosed me as suffering from ME.
I started watching this, then watched that one, then came back to this one...and talking about stress is REALLY familiar. I was a freelancer, and knew I wasn't exactly neurotypical but wasn't sure if I was neurodiverse, and I had really bad phyical symptoms due to anxiety and stress. Weirdly not as someone who is likely on the autistic part of the spectrum the lack of order, but more what I now know as Persistent Demand Avoidance - I liked being able to control my work and not go back to places, then clients liked me and asked me back, but started to annoy me after a few times. I now know I was avoiding those demands....but I did have physical symptoms from stress and eventually had complete burnout. Hence why I am not a designer/animator any more. So beware.
@@nicerperson1 funnily enough just had the tests for all that, after Paul Messner's recent video in fact. And it turns out it's not diabetes, or high blood pressure...but I think high cholesterol. Not sure, because the doctor decided it was non-urgent and scheduled an appointment for nearly 2 weeks later...which was weirdly reassuring vs having DKA like a diabetic friend thought. But I can see the test results online. Oddly if it is high cholestorol, or indeed neurodiversity - not had THAt conversation with my doctor yet, likely will raise it when they bring up diet because some stuff I cannot eat due to texture - it's a bit of an issue cos other health conditions - and indeed my genetics - trying to control that with diet. The usual 'eat fibre, eat veg' does not work with me that well.
Sorry to hear that your health is suffering! I honestly love your camping/hiking videos - I hope you manage to get to the root of the cause and bounce back we need more of your awesome content in our lives 🙌 best wishes!
Really sorry to hear about your health and hope it’s improving soon. Shame about the negative feedback, some folk are just not dialled in to how their comments can be so detrimental to one’s health, regardless as to if it’s justified or not. Great video as always and what a stunning place to be out in nature. Thanks for sharing. Best wishes,Mark
Thanks Mark. I’m used to negative feedback from clients, been getting it for years. But it does always throw you a bit when it’s unexpected and makes it difficult to concentrate on other things until you’ve resolved it. Takes a min or two to process and cant take it personally but there’s that moment when you first read it that it’s hard not to! Pleased to say I went back and re-edited the video that the feedback was for and honestly it’s a better video now.
@@StephenJReid Stephen....if you expect to expose yourself in RU-vid videos and not get q certain amount of haters.... You are incredibly naive or get off on the attention...
Hi Brother. I am actually suffering the same symptoms as you. I also think its stress... I cannot afford meeting the doctor though... (I'm on the PH and on the lower income level). The information you shared here helped me feel better knowing im not alone. Camp on!
Hi Jemar, well hopefully it helps to know that I’m feeling A LOT better now. I’ve tried improving my diet, a lot more veg, exercising more and taking some fish oil tablets. Dunno which thing is helping but something is!
Hi Stephen. Just a thought, have you looked at your water filter? Do you change it or steralise it much in case there is some bacterial transfer? Might cause sickness for a few days after a camp. Probably not but maybe worth a look. Cheers for posting, might look into a camp there myself soon 😊
I've watched quite a lot of wild camping videos, but dude, you're really funny! And entertainingly clumsy, or normal, or whatever you want to call it. I loved the video! And I also have a tent almost just like yours, except it probably has more condensation problems than yours. And you're right, there is something about them, even if they must be annoyingly impractical when the weather is not great, like waking up to rain. :) Anyway, great video.
Just found your channel, but extreme fatigue after cold exposure is common in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Given your time outdoors insect born viruses might be worth looking into. Hope you feel better soon. Health is everything. Love the video btw 😊
Nice video. I got my first hooped bivi in the late 80s and I have enjoyed some great nights under stars, wind, heavy snow and rain. Once you get the routine right its a pleasure. My most recent Rab Raider is old and does not have those snazzy guy ropes. I'm jelzybub.
I was kayak-camping with Harry and a couple women he invited. It started to rain and I saw one woman in her bivy so called out "I have wine" and she was instantly in my 3p tent with an empty glass. By the time the rain and wine ended, she left.
Sorry to hear that you often feel bad Stephen. Please take good care of yourself. We love the outdoor video’s, but it shouldn't be at the expense of your health of course.😉
If you have EVER been bitten by a tick, and you have the symptoms you described, you may have Lyme Disease. It is essential you get treatment if that is the case.
Given that you just got less than good news before you went camping, that may be more related to your feeling 'grim' the next day than the camping. that sort of thing plays on your mind a lot. And your mental health has a huge influence on your physical health. Having said that, one thing you may want to try - whenever I camped in the UK anywhere near bracken I always felt crap the next day. Maybe try camping somewhere 'tame' for a night and see how you feel the next day. It may be you are picking up some allergies from the places you are camping. Maybe you need to try somewhere a bit warmer.... Crete is nice and warm just now. You're welcome to pop over. I'll even buy you a beer ;-) Best of luck ;-)
Thanks! 🙂 I had several months of a v stressful work situation last year and now wondering if that had a lot to do it with it. Interesting idea about camping location! I do have mild hay fever. Maybe I should take an antihistamine before camping 🤷♂️
You need a break…take Louise on a holiday and book a massage….whatever you are stressing about, ask yourself “will I worry about this in 5 years time?”…if the answer is no, then it’s not worth worrying about now 😊. Your videos are great Stephen but you need to take time out for yourself…hope you are feeling better soon.
Great Video and to be honest I thought you were putting out a lot of videos. I think a lot of us have been feeling symptoms like you've suggested. Certainly the start of this year for me has been a pain in the hooped bivy! I'm gonna put it down to covid relayed lack of exposure to proper germs... We'll see! Anyway I hope you're health goes back in the right direction soon!
Thanks! Yeah I think maybe it could be covid related, it’s messed a lot of us up more than we realise I think. I’ve more camps planned soonish so I’ll see how they go. Might bring a biggger tent though.
Wow just came across your channel , fantastic video and good humour ! Looking forward to catching up on all the rest of your videos ! I’ve run my own business for 30 years and in the past a bad email , text , call from clients could literally have me throwing up , I really got ill at times with stress ! I went down the rabbit hole on trying to understand it . What I learnt is we have definite physical and chemical reactions to stress ( it’s actually a survival mechanism the body adopted in the days when we got chased by lions , run after by spear throwing enemies etc , most of us don’t get that now , but the body reacts to any threat i.E crappy text , crappy email , getting too cold on top of a mountain 😂the same as a lion trying to eat us ! ) the body goes into flight or fight mode , produces Adrenalin and lots of other chemicals and shuts down blood flow to the brain etc and sends it to the muscles that will get you safely up a tree and to safety . This will suppress your immune system and you will feel ill The problem we have now is not the big threats of the past , it’s the constant low level stress day in day out that modern man faces but the body reacts as trained , unfortunately the somatic mind can start to identify situations that has no threat as threat or danger , you go camping which always de stressed you , you got Ill then the body identifies getting cold and wet up a mountain as a threat and the cycle goes on . Like IBS suffers who when they even think about eating get spasms and when they learn that food is ok it can go away ( vagus nerve and brain stomach connection ) There are lots of ways to deal with this . Sorry to go on but learning this literally saved my life 😂
Cool beans - an improvement on a bivvibag perhaps, easier to do some stuff inside, but still a faff when getting out and it's raining, fab cinematography, not sure why you should be getting those negative waves, perhaps you need nicer clients! Hope you get those health issues sorted.
I am a first time viewer of your videos...and glad to say just the one video was all i needed to subscribe...the quality, the soundtrack, the information without it being thrown at you is all second to none...you managed to make it feel like I was out there myself....definetly getting the tents and packs back out after this...p.s from the comments you have a lot of positive feedback so keep on going..
Totally with you on this Stephen. I've just started to notice some changes in my own heath when im not out and about. Sometimes i finish work and go straight out on a camp just to relax a bit. Literally as soon as i get in and get a message or email 'boom' it all goes down hill again. Mentally i think I'm strong but my body is telling me otherwise.I hope you find the ballance that you need soon Stephen. Great stuff as always 👍
Mate I’ve been sick for about 1 week now and it started as a viral but yesterday I woke up with bad throat it’s absolutely ticking me off and I also think it’s due to stress/lack of sleep
I don't get ill. When I see things that stress me out! But I get super anxious! Which can lead to me doing things. I shouldn't like drinking too much! But I'm trying not to do that. I'm trying to combat my anxiousness! With outdoors And exercise! Easier sed that done though!
What a cracker, no negative feedback here. It takes courage to camp out alone, but sharing health issues is next level, hope you work out what the trigger is. (PS: My Paramo is 15 years old and still waterproofish, it performs much better than anything else).
Cracking video mate. Amazing scenery. Sorry to hear about the health issues. Stress eventually has to go somewhere. That's when the physical symptoms appear. Fingers crossed you get to the bottom of it. Looking forward to the next camp!
I like paramo stuff but wish they would do like Lundhags does on some of their similar jackets and keep the top half the jacket (shoulders, hood, etc) in waterproof goretex material and then the rest of the jacket is a polycotton breathable blend that can be treated with nikwax. I have this exact Lundhags jacket and its amazing.
@@StephenJReid I assume you mean PFC? Most manufacturers in Sweden don't use PFC's anymore. This includes Lundhags. You will commonly see the markings of "PFC-free", which includes PFA
oddly, I have exactly the same symptoms. Whenever I do an activity, Cycling, walking. the very next day suffer from cold flu symptoms. I got BUPA blood tests done and all ok. Consider Lymes disease if you've ever had any tick bites. I think it may be post covid immune suppression. a good dose of multi vitamins really helped me but its an odd one as I'm a pretty fit, healthy and non stressed person.
Got tested for Lymes so don’t think it’s that. Definitely a lot of people getting more sick post covid/being locked down. Could be a lot of bugs that we missed for 2years finally getting us all at once.
First of your videos i have watched and very impressed 👏. Really sorry about your illness. Sure sounds a lot like long covid or long vx injury. Really hope you find solutions soon.
Enjoyed the video, thanks for all the work on our behalf. That tent wasn't much bigger than a pizza oven, too small for me. Love the content, the humour and the photography. No negative feedback from here. Sorry to hear about the symptoms you are suffering from. They do sound remarkably like my Long Covid symptoms, with the same triggers. I am learning to adapt my life to it. Stress, lack of sleep, overworking, and overexertion all set it off. Learn to be kinder to yourself and accept the love and help from your lovely wife and family, it's the best medicine. Negative comments are such an easy thing to give without any thought about what impact they may have and rarely come with any alternative, positive suggestions. All the best, Keith
Thanks Keith 🙂 You’re not the only one that made the pizza oven comparison, it really does look like one! 😂 Long covid is on my list of possibilities, like you say, symptoms very similar. Hope you keep adapting and more so hope you get over it soon! Used to negative comments from clients, but they always catch you off guard at first.
"And if I press that button, it'll immediately send a mess..." "Louise, hi, no it's just a test, no cancel the air ambulance. No I'm just making a RU-vid video. What do you mean it only happened once before. OK twice. Hello?"
It’s called exposure. It’s when your body isn’t acclimated to hot and cold. Also you have allergies. Exposure symptoms are exacerbated in people with allergies (you won’t find that online) me and my brother have it. We get it worst when the seasons change (pollen production) and work outside. Edit: I work in the mold industry in America. I would suggest changing filters and getting an environmentalist to test your indoor air quality.
Fatigue; tired, slightly under the weather … had the same for years. After the U.K. health service completely failed me I eventually got a diagnosis of hypothyroidism with possible hashimoto syndrome. Blood tests only useful when taken directly after waking. Nhs bloody useless.
Bro, really likred the video. Keep on rocking, But quick tip, don't check business email on vacation, since no one pays you for thits. I did it myself and just learned it is so wrong in many ways.A big hug from this locaion i'm from :P love
Rushed experimental medication maybe🤷♂️ just a thought. I commend anybody that will hike out to the sticks and camp alone over even one night. There is nothing better to cleanse the mind✌️🇮🇪
Hey Stephen, I was actually planning the exact same trip in the next week or two so great to see your take on it! Hares Castle is a crackin wee spot, amazing views of the Annalong valley. Hope the sickness didn't last too long, your health is your wealth I believe they say! I'm potentially on the lookout for a satellite device, I've seen the Zoleo on a lot of US videos so really interested on how you find it compares to the Garmin. Those Firepot meals are really tasty, just tried a couple of them the other week in Wicklow and they really hit the spot, definitely one of the better ones. Great video as always Stephen, thanks again for sharing, ATB.
Great minds think alike! The Zoleo has just launched in the UK but has been on the go elsewhere for a lot longer. So far I’m mostly preferring it to the Garmin. App is much better designed and being able to have people contact you is a great feature.
Ahoy Leopold in Austria. I know what you’re thinking but I doubt it. I’ve been like this on and off for years, even as a child. But the last 2years or so have been a lot more stressful and disruptive which is why I think it’s been worse. And it’s only now I’ve really noticed it as a pattern. There’s a long list of 4-5 possible things it could be, some of which are in my family.
Lyme disease, which doctors will say you can't catch anywhere in the world, or Ross River Disease, which I don't think you can catch in Britian, but Lyme disease is by ticks, and RR disease is by mossies, your symptoms, sound similar to both those.
Have checked with a specialist on like ticks cause I got lime camping in America from a tick and I had the weirdest stuff go in with my body my blood work would come back fine but I wasn’t
Anxiety manifests in everyone differently, I recently went on SSRI'S for anxiety disorder, and I was convinced there was something physically wrong with me for months. No shame checking it out. My regards.
I had one of these in the 90s. Advertised as low profile so doesn't easily absorb the winds. I found it impracticable for my purposes. Still a great piece of kit if you want something small and light to carry.
Stephen you are among the very best on RU-vid. You are the type of person who strives to always do your very best and that can be stressful. I hope you are inundated with positivity and your ill health ends soon.
We have these type of tents in army onlly superexpensive ones..if you lost, damage it ...yes...you pay for it .. and they never work in rain... and even not have enough space for shoes and weapon ..so all equipement and backpack and body armor..stay out..on open rain
@@StephenJReid It is not good at all and it is onlly good for use in dry conditions. So we use just NATO standard tarp and is much smaller and lighter and much cheaper.
also, I have a OEX Salamander coffin tent and often carry a lightweight tarp and use it to cover the gear and keep it dry folding it and a couple of pegs comes in really handy
The trouble is your passionate about your work and aim to please . If we could care less is would be easier. Take it easy old boy, one day at a time. Live for the present. Look to far ahead and it will mess with your mind
partly agree with that. But one big reason I get a lot of stress is because I don't look ahead and then ahead catches up and I haven't planned properly. Live for the today and you'll starve tomorrow.
I stayed in an expensive named brand coffin on the top of a hill for one time only, I then binned it 😂 no thanks, I prefer a bit more room in my tent, remember and take some Avon skin so soft or smidge and a hairnet ... Midges are atracted to the co2 in your breath so no breathing 😂 ermm you can burn small amounts of real grass to smoke the we burgers out... I shall shut up and continue watching though 👍
You have to switch off from work. Dont check emails/messages after you finish work. be disciplined. I used to be like you and burnt myself out with work, resented work, hated work and eventually quit work despite being self employed and running my own business - you are entitled, heck you need down time, switch off. Your health is most important and relaxing is vital. Love your trips, use these as your escapes.
Not switching off is a big part of it. I’ve gotten to the resentment stage a few times in the past when I was doing different work so determined not to let it happen again. It’s not just work though. It’s work, plus RU-vid editing, comments etc, plus life, just everything all together.
@@StephenJReid indeed but... it is expansive, 330€ here in EU, is unconfortable... for lesser you can have something a bit heavier like a coleman bedrock or cobra that have much more room innit, for more you can have a dc normal tent, if you dont need to be really low profile..
Just found your channel! Youre an awesome content creator! Ive subbed! Sorry to hear about the illness 🤒 hope you get that sorted! Theres no way i could sleep in that tent hahaha! Our three man is small enough for me 😅
Um…. I’m thinking the continued work environment you take with you (ability to send emails, respond to contacts ) might be why you’re getting sick mate. Switch off, leave all the stress at the bottom of the mountain. You can alway pick it up agin on your way down … if you want it. God bless.
Yeah I think that doesn't help. If I'm awake I'm switched on to work and if not work then it's RU-vid. 7 hours a week just replying to comments and messages that have nothing to do with my day job.
Great channel thanks 👍 Just wanted to say past two years I'm exactly the same as yourself sore throat etc generally tired on off constantly doctor tried tell me stress or eat better 🤔.. ok doc , I'm 44 year old male normally fit and healthy, suspect it's since I had COVID in early spring two years ago, anyhoow don't give up, searching for the cause and get well soon 👍👍
Long Covid was also on the list of possibilities for me. One thing at a time though. If you watch my next video, the doctor likes there’s a likely explanation. My history of this pre-dates the pandemic. It’s definitely been worse the last 2years but I’ve also had a lot more stress with my work in the last year.
I subbed with the first minute, I love your humour and I’m obsessed with camping videos I’m from Canada and my dream is to go to Ireland one day, your channel is the perfect amalgamation of my passions! All my best to you and your health, I’ll be binge watching your videos now
Sounds like it could be anxiety related knocking down your immune system. That said please get yourself checked for Lyme's Disease its quite endemic in UK & Ireland of latevand I was unlucky enough to catch it from a tick bite a few years ago. It can be quite nasty if left untreated so please push your doctor to get you tested. Hope it all pans out, great videos.
You looked like a ghost when you were at the office, a heavy workload or insufficient sleep may have contributed. Track back and try to understand what factors contributed to this problem so that you can take corrective action. It is important not to be sensitive to negative commentary, ignore that. Enjoyed your video and your honesty. Keep it up.
I definitely have a low stress tolerance. Too much and I get mouth ulcers as well. And I almost never sleep well. Been a bad sleeper my whole life. Wake up most nights at least once
A very refreshing video...and the last place I'd ever expect to see anyone using resistance bands. Hooped bivis can be fun and I guess they have their place...but yeah they're not the most palatial! Saddened to hear you felt rough the day after Stephen and hope it can be attrubuted to stress as there are lots of techniques to manage that as you no doubt know by now. Hoping the people giving you the crappy feedback get to see these videos of yours to appreciate your dedication, patience and humour. I've subscribed. By the way, what trekking boots are those you're wearing?
Perfect place for resistance bands 😂 lightweight, compact, perfect for camping. Since had more confirmation that it’s prob stress related so making changes in that direction. Think I was wearing the Vivobarefoot forest boots. Still making my mind up on them but no doubt will have a video out
Great content dude, just started watching and the quality and content is great. On the illness side of things I have been getting sick alot to all since covid, so although doctor says might be ADHD related or stress don't discount the fact since covid alot of our immune systems have been affected, but your a healthy guy and I think if you stay positive and keep the body in good shape I'm sure you will improve Iver time. Chin up and great work.
Bivy style "tents" like those are so much easier to get in and out of if it uses a side zipper. However, the main problem with those types of "tents" is that they rest on top of your sleeping bag and they have a horrible problem with condensation, so in cold weather they will soak your sleeping bag. You can avoid this by covering your sleeping bag with a mylar blanket, but it might be better to just get a bit bigger of a tent, where the walls are pulled up off your sleeping bag.
This one is actually great for not having much condensation even in cold weather. The fabric it’s made from is amazing. But it is very expensive compared to most of them
That’s wick about feeling ill so often especially after doing something you enjoy. Not something you can take a pill for either. Rest up when you can. All the best.
Hoping you recover! Been watching your fun and funny camping videos here in the Philippines. And they are just brilliantly made. Wish you all the success. Planning to see more of your handy work. God bless and mabuhay!
