Today we casually talk about working alone vs working with others. Applies to a lot of people in the Game Development field.

As a game developer with 16+ years of experience, being on both sides ( mostly as a team-player though) I can tell you this: The biggest challenge with the team - is to find someone skilled enough to produce high-quality content and crazy enough to share the same vision as you ))) For indie teams, typically there is so called "core team", which employs both qualities, plus any amount of outsourcing (including scripts, level design, music, you name it), which could have zero vision, you just pay for their skills and then the core team integrates the assets they produce. You can even buy assets from stores like Unity Asset Store, but then you still need some level of knowledge integrating them into your game. Also, I'm not even talking about MULTIPLAYER here, that requires A LOT of specific training, and being a solodev you could spend like half of your time just leaning things, but not actually developing anything. I love the GDC talk about wearing too many hats (don't remember the title, sorry) by two ladies running a gamedev company. I'd recommend to watch it to fully realize how many completely different fields you need to cover to ACTUALLY produce and successfully launch even a tiny simple game. Cheers!

Before I watch the video I just wanted to comment about my experience so far and where I'm currently at: Basically, I've not had much luck with teams so far. The one time I had a "team" was at the start of the project I'm working on, and it basically came down to me doing absolutely everything for it, as no one in the team could either a) do what they offered/claimed to be able to, or b) apparently didn't have the time when it actually came down to it. Both resulted in me (originally just an idea guy, looking for people with skills to actually be able to do something with them) learning to do and then doing absolutely EVERYTHING for the project... which in a sense is good since it forced me to do more than sit there and order my teammates around. It meant I had to actually learn modeling skills, coding skills, texture making skills, etc.. There's also a level of quality control I have in place now because it's practically all just me, and I don't know that it'd necessarily be there otherwise (there were a lot of clashing and sometimes very bad ideas, which is a no go when I'm a perfectionist and when I set out and started the project I had a very specific vision for it). It made me kind of happy for awhile to be doing it on my own because of this. The flip side of this though, is that it kind of also sucks to be doing pretty much everything for a big, ambitious project, especially when you're so new to practically every single aspect of it. Luckily, I typically learn pretty quick with this stuff, and I've also finally gotten a decent modeler on hand to help with a couple world models from time to time, and a couple people I occasionally can ask for code related things, but it's still tough. There's so much to do and not enough time in the day to do it, and I'll need to progress a lot as a coder/modeler etc. in order to be able to ever achieve it all, but that again can be seen as a positive. I want to reach out and pick up (decent and competent) team members, but I don't know where to look, or how to ask. Anyways, just wanted to say that. Now to watch the video.

Solo - You are responsible for your success or failure. Team - Failure can be because of you, someone else or everyone.

I agree, I find teamwork is hard on projects because your imagination can't be the deciding factor.

I studied games as well. We started of with a board game project as well and during the project I already figured out that my path is to go solo. Everyone else was making some meme games you laugh twice at with your classmates and then there was me who wanted to make real products from the day one. I graduated this summer with over two million downloads already and none of my classmates have published any games yet. It's doable and it's amazing to be your own boss.

Yeah teamwork is very hard for me in general. I've been in many group projects with people in college and they tend to be the type of people that will dictate the topic our project will be on and they were the type that did very little of the actual work. I have been in several groups of 3 where the other 2 members were close friends and I was just the third wheel that had no say. In one of these projects, where the group members grade each other, I had my grade lowered because my group members accused me of "procrastinating" when in reality I had to finish their parts of the project because they had "problems that came up". I really despise the idea of being the scapegoat for someone elses incompetence.

What would be cool is if similar to the twitch pokemon thing but instead maybe doing something like working on the cowboy vs ninjas game with people sending models scripts ideas etc while streaming it. It sounds neato to me.

I think depends on how you are and how your teammates are, some people dont usualy work well in groups but with the right pesrson can realy do more progress, faster or even better

Got a question dude, Nowadays there are lots of game, there is a game already for any idea I can think of and if I try making a game out of the ideas I have it will just become a clone/replica of something that's out there. Most of developers say idea is nothing but what do you think about this ?
@thibaultvergne7087
@thibaultvergne7087 7 лет назад
One idea can be treated in many differents ways Look at overwatch and lawBreakers, both are hero class shooter game but both give differents feeling and have different playstyle even if the initial idea is the same. what can you do? maybie try to do a demo, if you think some points are too close to the game you took inspiration from, try to modify it. i think it s the best way but i m not a pro, and a very little experience ^^

The problem i have had is that I have tried to team up with people that aren't nearly as dedicated as I am. I'm the type of person who will daydream about the game all the time and then come in and spend hours trying to make that dream a reality. Where as the people who I have teamed up with in the past acted like they were all for it and hyped up but when it came down to actually working on it....eh....I'll get it tomorrow. 5 months later I finally get 4 character design concepts and then the project crashes.

Jeff Hughes exactly! I have lost 3-4 artists simply because they lost interest, my game would be great with artwork but I can’t find someone as passionate as me for my game (I’m a programmer )

Great video Taria but I habe a question have you ever heard of a software called BuildBox it like unity but less knowledge of coding. It been use to make hit app games like Color switch. If so then would you recommend it to others than unity?!
@billy7685
@billy7685 7 лет назад
If you are starting out with game development it's great to learn something like that to help you grasp how coding works so then you can move onto unity or something else and understand it a lot easier

it takes a lot of time doing it solo, you're in control so you an do what ever, I can do the assets for the game and the music but I struggle with code, I just cant do it

If you want a grade A game with compelling story, beautiful artwork, dreamy music and functional code without bugs, you need a team no matter how much you lie to yourself that you can do it all.

Writer, composer, programmer and illustrator. Jack of all trades. Of course you can do it all, everyone can, but no one can make all of those to shine. Trust me, what you have in your head more than often turns into a complete garbage at the end if you try to do it alone.
@bemo_10
@bemo_10 7 лет назад
allldin you can always hire people to do the art and the writing while you do the coding, and it still counts as solo developing.
@AaronBowley

disagree. i don't think it's for everyone, but i'm doing it :) im a jack of all trades in many trades tho so it comes natural to me.

Depends what your goal really is. Generally, pick up something like c, c++, or c# and then add on skills from there. For example, Unreal Engine or Unity. There is a great guide by Milo Yip that will sort of guide you from a beginner level into the more advanced and specific fields. github.com/miloyip/game-programmer. Hope that helps, and good luck with your game development.

TL;DR: you are great... are you rich? Hi, a bit of a rude and maybe personal question so feel free to ignore... So do you have successful games under your belt? By successful I mean one that got a lot of downloads and/or made a lot of money? I'm asking this because I'm following your channel for a while now and I was wondering how does someone at your level of knowledge and skill (very high) is succeeding in the game industry. Ok that was a mouth full

Crimson Lava It can be done solo, but I probably would not try it without using an engine like Unreal or Unity. Developing one yourself is no small task.

I started with c++ when I was 11. If you want to do it I would suggest you start getting an understanding now. Don't expect to make the next big game or anything but make little things that amaze your family. You can find loads of free tutorials online for this sort of thing. I would suggest starting with C#, as it is almost as powerful as C++ but a lot easier for someone just starting with code.
