Went on a camp on Dawdon beach, Seaham. I explored a bit of the former pit which was used as a waste coal dumping site which is why the sand is black. The beach is known as 'The Blast'.
Thousands of men and boys mined coal 500 meters below the earth here and miles out under the North Sea. More than 100 were killed in often brutal accidents and those lives and deaths only add poignancy to what remains.
The beach in some parts looks like your on a different planet, I've only recently learned it was used in the film 'Alien 3'. Theres so much history behind this beach
