Arthur Bliss: Concerto for Piano & Orchestra I: Allegro con brio 00:00 II: Adagietto 15:30 III: Andante maestoso - Molto vivace 26:26 Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Sir Adrian Boult rec. 1943
Rawsthorne,Tippett so much better.Britten piano concerto boring but Solomon could have taken any of these!Geese 40 minutes of this stuff .So many other good Engish concerti from this time why this one. Bliss ' name gets bandied about more he had better pr than so many others . Slow mov. is well played by all but not much better than 1st mov. Solomon makes it worth hearing great dynamic and sensitive playing in mid movement (in anyone else's hands it would just be salon drivel .What was Bliss about .Vaughan William's concerto 2pf is so much more intersting why didnt he give that a go! Strauss Burleske so much else would have profited from Solomon's intelligence .
I wonder why such a genius wasted his time on THIS. Imagine: he could have spent all this time and effort on recording some more Beethoven sonatas. Or even some Schubert! Such a sad, sad waste... 😭😭😭
We need genuises to play more 20th cent stuff.Clara Haskil in Hindemith put Joy in me Heart! Wish she'd done some Enescu like her friend Lipatti did.Ogdon luckily programmed lots of out of the way music. This Bliss is not to my liking .I wonder who induced him to learn, play record it !? I hope the 2nd or finale are better .
