Glad to see someone appreciate 976 evil...one of their more underrated songs. That and following up with this place is death to close it is the perfect way to wrap up an amazing album.
this place is death might be my fav deftones song ever. it's WAY up there for me. it's just got this great off-kilter rhythm and really bright but dim fuzzy tone. it's so sparkly but grey and haunting. it is just the best of what they do so well, for me.
This is my favorite Deftones album. super underrated. Glad you also liked it Deftones tends to get Categorized as either “Nu metal” (which is a mixture of metal and rap) because of their heavier songs, or shoegaze because of their pretty/ chill songs. I’d recommend checking out both genres because they’re fantastic. If you wanna check out Nu metal I’d Recommend starting with Linkin Park. If you wanna check out shoegaze slowdive is probably the most popular but smaller bands like Downward and Warstories are really good as well
Screaming definitely isn’t for everyone but it can be really cool when you get into it. I think killswitch engage is a good example of a gateway band into harsher vocals
I suggest listening to their most underrated album: saturday night wrist. It's probably their best opera in terms of production, and has beautiful melodies
Beauty School begins my playlist of favourite 10 songs of theirs, and it's their best album I think overall. My favourite of all their songs though is Rocket Skates. I absolutely adore the shouty bit that ends in a "woo" - it's such a raw expression through such an awesome voice. But also love the way some words are seperated in the verses - like "sadistic tra - ance" with those odd glottal breaks, just lovely. Does a similar thing in the Seen the Butcher verses too. I'm not usually a huge fan of shouty singing either, but there are some singers that can just get me with it, but it's rare, but when it hits it hits. I do know what you mean by that, even though it's different moments with different opinions.
I think based on the songs you gravitate to, you would really like their album Gore. It's got mixed fan reviews, but it's more melodic, and ethereal, and you seem to be appreciative of those types of Deftones tracks.

Welcome back sir. Deftones are great since they literally have so many songs for any kind of mood you’re in. Agree with this album Risk and 976 - evil are my favorites too. Looking forward to your next Deftones album reaction. If you want something heavy - adrenaline/Around the Fur… but if you don’t like the screaming Chino probably not going to like this early stuff More like diamond eyes - Koi yo/ohms And of course White Pony is always good but I think it’s overrated.
