You should try this again but with hard sugar candy instead to make it edible... I don't know if the properties would be the same but they might be similar, and it would be cool to see the difference!

I think the liquid nitrogen drops didn't work because the temperature difference was high enough for the Leidenfrost effect to take place, causing the drops to cool much slower. It may also partly explain why the last one you made was still hot. That being said, I would love to see you detonate some underwater, especially some giant ones like Chris suggests!

What makes prince Rupert's drop explosions awesome is it makes some amazing particle- like dust!!

It's stuff like this that you guys would do well to have the slo mo guys involved. To see the explosion from start to finish with their cameras would be outstanding.

I definitely was one of the people who suggested this so here are 2 MORE IDEAS FOR TKOR: making home made/DIY fiber glass and making a laser motion detection circuit. If you are melting glass for another project you can set aside some long thin strings of it and marvel over how flexible they get when they are thin and use that as a teaser for the DIY fiber glass video. Get some fibers of various different sizes but aim for as thin and long as you can get it. Test them out to see what is best for what you are using them for and then continue with the best. Then try painting the outside with black, white or silver and compare those with a naked one to see what works the best then try to use it in a project. It would be super awesome for you guys to make a laser beam motion detector circuit! Bonus cool points for doing as many of these other things with it as possible: It would be really cool if you could set it up with the laser bouncing off of tons of little mirrors zig zagging the beam either in a door way, across a hallway or a around a room then you reveled it by turning the lights out and blowing smoke through it (like in a heist movie), set it up so the power cord was USB so you could have it running off of a USB power bank, a computer or a wall outlet, make it at least kind of hidden or just put all the stuff for it into something that looks normal to be plugged into the wall (empty cigar boxes are cheep and look pretty nice as a project box), modify it with a non visible light beam, use some of the home made fiber-optic cables even if they are just to route the light from indicator LEDs or something up to the surface to create a more subtle or hidden display, make it have either an in person alarm or it silently triggers and just counts how many times the beam is broken, and lastly integrate an arduino board or something connected to bluetooth or wireless internet so that when it triggers you get a text message/email or something. Hope to see one of these in the near future.

If a few ripples in the water are enough to disrupt the formation of a drop, surely the boiling of the liquid nitrogen should be also.

How to not break a prince Rupert's drop: surround the rail with more prince Rupert's drops

It bothered me so much whenever she said the drops were combusting. Combustion is a chemical reaction, which changes the chemical properties of a substance when reacting with oxygen. As you've all seen, every time one of the drops shatters it's still glass. You could even re-melt the glass powder and recreate the Prince Rupert's drop over and over again. All the reactions taking place here are purely mechanical, as it's the release of the tension between the glass molecules that has built up from the rapid cooling and contraction. Also, the reason the liquid nitrogen didn't work is because it didn't cool the glass fast enough because of the Leidenfrost effect. The temperature difference between the glass and the liquid nitrogen is so great that it created a gas barrier around the drop, insulating it from the extreme cold. While in the water, the drop is in direct contact with the water, allowing its heat to be pulled away far more quickly.

I've been blowing glass for years and you can get much larger and more powerful drops using a punti rod. We made a large on once and put it into a clear takeout container to minimize the mess and amount of projectiles , and it broke through the walls and still sent pieces flying.

I would recommend wearing gloves and saftey glasses at all times when handling these drops if you value your eyes, 9:27 those could shatter in your hands and your not wearing eye protection and cool glass shards in your house where there are small children. Just a tip it's hidden in them. It would be just one video😂

I love your videos and am a regular viewer but please take this into account. The nicks and cuts are the least of your worries. You really should be wearing masks when doing this. Those powdered glass particles are going to play havoc on your nose and lungs, even being outside.

1) The colored glass will DEFINITELY react differently. 2) Callie was burning the glass. It was significantly darker in the water. 3) Focusing the heat on the drop is excellent advice, just not quite that close to the glass. 4) Amateur hot and cold glass enthusiast who has been studying glass since age 9... Over 30 years.

as someone who works with glass blowing on the Daily, you may wanna check the "coe" or expansion rate of the glass rods. on another note you can buy borosilicate tubes off of amazon and id love to see you guys try to blow glass bubbles. keep up the awesome vids

If you ever try these again, do it with borosilicate glass, a type of glass use to make laboratory glassware. You can other type of glasses, graded from 1 to 4 in Roman numerals which all are used for different work in pharmaceutical industry.
