A very sad case. Makes a good case for harsher penalties on bad people. Good video. Good Luck, Rick

I'd have to agree with you there. Thanks, Rick!

That book “Trailed” is awesome. Such a sad story; so glad law enforcement finally solved the case which may give at least some peace to the families.

Yeah! I actually looked it up because I saw a TikTok by the woman who escaped Richard Evonitz/ got him caught and wanted to see if they ever made any connection between the cases and bam, I saw they'd solved it!

Thanks for the update! I also had not heard the news. I know Kathryn Miles mentioned in the book that she continued to follow the case. It would be interesting to see her reaction to the news since she had become so heavily invested in the case.

Oh I actually saw that she was quoted in the Washington Post article about the news: www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/06/20/shenandoah-park-murders-virginia/

Thanks for that update. Agree, I feel the trail is safe, the majority of the time. That being said- your advice of trusting instincts is spot on. I will be carry bear spray during my next LASH as I had too many weird encounters last go round. Also hiked with some women who carried bear spray…not really for bears. She convinced me.

Ah that is frustrating to hear you've been having some weird encounters! I've definitely had a few. I generally carry pepper spray with me on solo hikes. I'll be getting some bear spray for grizzly country this summer though, so that may be my new go-to.

My Wife and I were visiting Skyland shortly after this happened ive thought about it and wanted justice of some sort ever since. And i actually had a run in with Stephen Carr in Michaux state forest not long before he followed 2 women hikers shot and killed one of them in Pennsylvania many years ago

Gosh I was so happy to see this case closed. I’ve thought of it for many years. And oh wow that’s crazy about the run in! Did anything weird happen?

I feel that. I like to be far far away from roads and towns.

Difficult video to listen to. One of the nicest people I've ever met talking about one of most horrible] People this world could produce. Glad to know they have it solved

Thanks for the update. Most people on the trail are wonderful, this man was pure evil. I have two daughters and one of them likes to hike a lot. I have her carry mace and bear spray and not for bears. I would suggest being very careful at road crossing, parking lots and any camping locations within a short walk of a road. Last summer the Green Mountain Club closed one of their shelters on Pico Mountain because of a man named Salt. He is an older but very large man who was harassing hikers, especially women. He made the shelter his home and he would take the free but into Rutland. Sadly, the club received no help with Salt so the boarded up the shelter. If you look in the Far-Out app in 2022 you will see many comments about this man. I feel bad for these two women, their friends and family. RIP

Yes I'm the same - I carry pepper spray, but not really for the animals. Though that will change when I am carrying bear spray in grizzly country this summer. :) I agree - the most dangerous areas to camp in my mind are near roads and near towns. On the AT, I HATED camping right near roads - it would always freak me out. I hate hearing that about the shelter in Vermont. It's frustrating when law enforcement won't do anything about it (like the guy who ended up murdering someone back in 2019). Unfortunately there are bad people everywhere, but luckily the trail community is awesome for the most part.

I had heard about this but wasn’t too familiar. Thanks for talking about it and I’m glad that they eventually caught the guilty person. I am always interested in true crime and I agree, generally speaking the trail is a safe place. Sadly there are crazy people all over. They just caught the killer of the lady murdered on a Maryland trail 😢. Happy trails.🤘🏻🥾⛰️
