Nothing better than weld on heavy gray glue. That and primer is what i use to glue pvc pipes.

I also sand before the primer. call it over the top. takes no time and it’s done in all other professions with other materials.

Dont forget theres a difference between set time and cure time. Ive repaired lots of blue glue pipes that have blown apart. When i do sprinkler repair and theres systems that are pushing 70-80 psi i use Gray heavy body blue and i wait till cure time 15-20 min before i turn the water on. Ive seen people use blue glue on 70psi systems and turn the water on 5 min later i just go and shake my head and say to myself i wouldnt want to be that guy when that blue glue blows apart 10-30 years down the road.

As far as the application, there are connections where you can't see the other side of the pipe that you need to attach a fitting to. In those cases its best to not only swab the glue around the pipe, but on the blind side also run the swab up and down the pipe. This will help eliminate the possibility of leaving a bare spot where you can't see it. (I learned that the hard way many years ago!)

Thanks Steve! I have only done a couple of plumbing projects on my own pool. One thing I ended up puzzled about was that for the Pentair check valves - which seem all to have CPVC bodies - they recommended Weld-on 724. I went ahead and used that even though it's a bit hard to find and not cheap. Yet I saw several forums with pool pros saying just use the usual PVC glue like 711 and it will be fine. What would you say?

Steve, a few months ago I had to relocate the pool equipment to a new building. The primer I tried to use (O~~~) was as thin as water. Unusable. Ever heard of this?
