Solving Cicada 3301: Decoding the Internet's Greatest Mystery
Early in the morning of January 4th 2012, a strange message appeared on the internet. Just a few lines of text on an image, posted anonymously.
Hello. We are looking for highly intelligent individuals. To find them, we have devised a test.
There is a message hidden in this image.
Find it, and it will lead you on the road to finding us. We look forward to meeting the few that will make it all the way through.
Good luck.
3301
Many speculated that it was a recruiting tool for the NSA, CIA, MI6, or even the Masons.
But who was really behind it, and what was its purpose? Did it even have a purpose?
Whether it did or not, it didn’t matter. Because when you post a puzzle on the internet looking for “highly intelligent people”, that’s a challenge that’s simply impossible to resist.
So, the hunt for Cicada 3301 was on.

As a security researcher, I’m always super impressed with your ability to articulate very complex cybersecurity and technical concepts for everyone but without over-simplifying them to a point where they lose context and meaning, AJ! This is incredibly difficult to do even for experts. Just wanted to give you a shout out for doing an amazing job educating people on topics such as these and inspiring the future generations of cybersecurity professionals! And for teaching people how to balance keeping an open mind but fostering skepticism about that’s satisfied with hard data and evidence! That’s super critical especially in fields like cybersecurity! I’m not sure of your background, but it certainly wouldn’t shock me if we had shared aspects!

Can you imagine how much better the world would be if main media sources deep dived as much as the why files?? I mean they legit leave no stone unturned in terms of discovery, motives, science behind it, context, historical context, alternative pathways, regardless of the topic I know when I watch an episode I’m getting a nice genuinely thought out overview of the entire topic at hand. The world needs more channels like this on all topics.

I was in the Navy during the Persian Gulf war and worked as a Cryptographer, and the Navy realized as did Cicada that Cryptographers got bored if they weren't challenged. So they created a group call puzzle box that sent us puzzles every week for us to solve and compete with other cryptographers, to keep us engaged and our minds sharp. I recall how excited everyone was in my division when they sent us puzzles to work on. The Navy had realized even back then that Mathematicians and programmers weren't the best at decryption, but instead artists, graphic designers and linguists were better at it, creative minds seem to have a better aptitude for cryptography.

They aren't solved though? At least, not all of them. Most of the pages of the Liber Primus remain undeciphered. Though, perhaps the explanation that what they were a group looking for people of compatible political alignment to turn into software developers to further their goals of privacy is satisfactory closure to who Cicada 3301 actually are. Or at least what their goals are. Which cipher was solved and which wasn't was already known for people who came from LEMMiNO's video.

I was one of the less patient solvers of this original run of puzzles. I enjoyed them and one of the papers with the QR code was in my hometown right across the street from where I worked at the time. It gave me chills to see that those coordinates were literally right across the street from where i normally parked, only to find the paper with the logo and QR code just stapled to a power pole. Fun times.

Thanks for this great and thorough rundown on cicada. Knew bits of it before but not the whole picture. Think this is an interesting case of a rigorous selection process inadvertently selecting for the wrong traits. While they were selecting for highly proficient people, they were more specifically selecting for people who would do so without caring about any practical outcomes. But what they actually needed were people who could be motivated by an actual end goal - other than just solving another puzzle. A lot of selection processes in the real world suffer the same problem.

When that cicada thing came out, I said that it was probably some club at MIT doing some kind of augmented reality game. Then I forgot about it. I guess I wasn't too far off. It is a noble cause, but the wrong way to recruit people and it's pointless because there are actual people out there trying to fight for privacy, like that group that goes around London cutting the facial recognition cameras. I guess I'll be more impressed if Cicada 3301 actually did something like hack in and shut down the whole London facial recognition grid.

I'm just about to watch this episode but before I do I have to mention this. So I heard about this puzzle about 2 years ago and always thought it was super interesting. So I live just outside of Colorado Springs and I'm a mobile mechanic. I have a friend that has some cars he rents out on the Toro app. He parks them all in a lot near the colorado springs Airport in a buisiness park. I happen to be over there working on a car and as I was leaving I just happen to look off at a small outbuilding that is on the north west side of the airport on the backroad that runs parallel with the airport. I kind of just noticed it out of the corner of my eye as I passed and had to go around the block to make sure it was what I thought it was. It's a small old run down brick shed style building in the middle of a small field next to the airport. Painted on the side of the building that takes up the entire side of it is the same exact cecad a from this puzzle. Not like something similar. I'm talking the exact cecada. Not sure what it may mean but it sure was cool to see especially since I've heard about this story multiple times now in the past couple years. If anyone is interested in knowing where it is go on google maps and pull up these coordinates then look towards the airport. 38.8134109, -104.7236494 There is a small white building right next to the road with a blue bay door. On the wall that faces towards the south is the cecada. You can see it on google maps.
@SamBorgman

And a really SPECIFIC coordinates on Google earth, or it could just be too much paranoia from coffee on my part 😆

I grew up in Little Rock Arkansas, where one of the laminated cicada papers was found. Near downtown Little Rock there's a pizza place called Vino's, about 50 yards East of that building was a light pole, and on that pole I actually saw that laminated paper with the cicada image on it. At the time I didn't think anything of it, until about a year later when my tekkie friends started talking about it. I believe it was also on some of the local news networks. If I'm not mistaken there was also one on the ramp to The Big Dam Bridge, which is one of, if not the longest pedestrian bridges in the world which spans over Murray Lock and dam. This story had always facinated the hell out of me, thanks for covering these videos, your channel is one of the most mind stimulating channels online.

@kristopherdickson6606 9 месяцев назад
I think the truth is in the middle. The key takeaway here is group effort(that includes those who made the tools, not just the ones using them). One person will come up with an idea or decipher a part of a mystery that opens the door for others. Through the power of collective effort and sharing information/experience, is humanity truly capable of incredible feats. This is a prime reason why I'm convinced that there are those who are focused on keeping us arguing among ourselves, because together, we are powerful enough to achieve anything.

Has anybody ever attempted to check any cameras around those areas to try and identify who stapled them there? What kind of paper or ink was used? Hell, even the tape or staples could be clues. Were the orientation of the staples in themselves a clue? Were the posters oriented such that they were facing a certain direction? Just some food for thought.

Thank you for keeping The Why Files as visual as you do. Most creators opt for content you can just listen to, all the visual work you do is so good. Can't take my eyes off the story my guy.🤘

Agreed, this is worlds better than a podcast type episode with just a guy talking the whole time.

Imagine spending hundreds of hours trying to solve multiple puzzles, winning and being rewarded an unpaid job to write code for someone else

I remember going through this in real time as it happened. I was greeted with a dead end when it went into the real world. I was married and living in Nowhere NC and couldn't just up and leave to go chase a clue in New Orleans which was the closest first real world clue to me. So that is where I left the puzzle. I did keep up with what other claimed to have found online. But most of it was just posturing by bad actors who wanted to seem smart. Kinda disappointed that at the end of the day it was just to write code (supposedly) But this group was never named and bears a striking resemblance to The Culper Ring which may or may not still operate protecting liberty to this day. If you believe in that sorta thing...3301

Whenever I see a complex thing play out like this and then turn out to be kinda nothing, I assume it went further underground. If I were going to set up a IYKYK type situation, at a certain point I'd leak Intel that it was all just a big joke, or fizzle out or be easily dismissed in some way so that it could be created without prying eyes.

I too remember this when it happened. I never dug in as far as you as I realized that it was going to be a huge time sink and I'm glad I didn't as I would have ended up stumped when they said to go it alone. As brought up in the video it seems odd that someone would use this method to recruit people to create new means of encrypting material. I could see a group thinking it was a good idea but after the initial results from the first group I don't see why they would keep going (other than the fun of the development of the puzzles.) This method would be better to come up with a group of people who like the challenge of decrypting messages, like the NSA might want to have on hand.

@@justasbytautas2874Dude, these mystery groups are pure BS. There's is no mystery group that actually does a damn thing except make mystery.
