You have to find factors of 16 that have a sum of -10. When you multiply -2 and -8 you get 16. But when added you get -10.

Make both binomials a 1 step equation by setting them equal to zero. x-8=0 when solved you get 8

In the end how did you change the negative 2 and 8 into positive?

You have to set up 2 one step equations by setting each binomial equal to 0. When you have x-8=0 , you do inverse operations to solve the equation by adding 8 to both sides. Then you're left with x=8. The same applies for x-2=0. Add 2 to both sides and you're left with x=2.

When you have: (x-2)(x-8)=0, Please remember that you have to equal it to zero because you are looking for the x-intercepts. When you are presented with a linear equation in the form y=mx+b, you may not realize that you can actually set the y equal to zero because you are looking for the coordinate when y equals zero. It’s the same thing we are doing here. And then, the property of zero tells us that if two numbers multiplied equals to zero, then one of the factors or both of them are equal to zero. Thus, allows us to create one-step equations to get our two x-intercepts.
