As a Gold Coaster, I hope this is the beginning of a new trend of videos about the Gold Coast. I live in Mudgeeraba, which has a lot of history from the old logging days. Don't know a lot about it, but there's a statue of a fellow with a big saw and his dog in the centre of Mudgeeraba :)

19:06 The reason for this "land removal" would have been sand mining, I know this because my grandfather had a sand mining operation in Oxley Creek in the 90's. The general idea is that creek flats contain significant amounts of sand of suitable quality for producing materials like concrete, so it's quite a valuable resource. As you'd expect it makes creek sections significantly wider and deeper from all the dredging work.

Thanks Rob. I find your videos really interesting, especially this one as my mother grew up in Upper Coomera in the 20s and 30s. She remembered Russ Hinze as a slim young man who was a good dancer. My father worked on the arrowroot farm during the Depression when there were many nationalities working there. It saddens me to see that a once peaceful, idyllic place has been lost.

Speaking of theme parks, the last time I went to a theme park was in the 70s when I was a young teen. Seaworld. I have never been to any of the other theme parks. Oh, and thanks again for the education, Rob. My grandfather was offered quite a few hundred acres of land down Gold Coast way in the 30s (I think) for 800 pounds. He turned down the purchase because he thought nothing would ever happen down in the swamps.

An Aunt and Uncle bought a "farm" between what is now Southport and the highway when the old fellah got out of the Army after the War. The relies derided the purchase as useless for farming. But at the bottom of the quarriable hill was a gully area filled with plaster sand. Forward quite a few decades and the old Aunty was still residing on the remnant of the hill like Grandma Clampett surrounded by Industrial Estates sited on the quarried out and developed areas and levelling her musket and acid wit at the strings of young shysters who'd turn up regularly to make her an offer she couldn't possibly refuse! 😜🙄🤣🤣

Our family legend has it that my paternal grandfather was the first person to drive a motor car from Brisbane to Sydney in a continuous manner. I recall reading his journal and that it took him a day to reach Beenleigh. I can only assume he crossed the old ford on the Coomera River as I don't recall reading about it in his journal. Rob, maybe you should document the old lion safari parks. Thanks again for a great doco.

Thanks Rob. Really enjoyed the video. Have lived around here for the last 25 or so years. Didn't realise I drove past Russ Hinze's grave every day. I remember trekking down the old highway from and back to Brisbane back in the late 70's and 80's. That original Coomera bridge was always a bit scary. Speed zone dropped to 80 there, but with big semi-trailers whizzing across what is a quite narrow bridge it was a little harrowing. There was often a police radar in the 80 zone there. Don't know if this is urban legend or not, but I remember when an exit/entry for the old highway was built on the south side of the river, whose sole purpose it seemed was to deliver traffic to the Oxenford Hotel, owned we were told by Big Russ himself. Minister for Main Roads getting a highway exit installed for his benefit the rumour was. Does that sound like the politics in QLD in the 70's and 80's??

The Hollywood house in Dreamworld you mentioned was owned at one time the Day family, The grandson was Thomas Day who was one of the main suspects in the unsolved Gatton Murders of the 3 Murphy family siblings on Boxing day 1899. Good video. I currently live in Upper Coomera. When I was studying history at uni I did research on the early Coomera settlement. You are correct in that Coomera was a way point heading south into NSW. However, the location of the original Coomera settlement wasnt by accident. The point where the ford over the Coomera river was located, your picture with a young Rus Hinze, was the farthest navigable point on the Coomera river. At this point vessels brough in supplies but it was also the location where felled trees were brought from the Mt Tamborine hinterland and floated down the river to wait for the right tide to float them up to Brisbane. Many of these trees made their way to England and were used in docking along the Thames as the timber was resistant to boring. The route down old coach rd to what is now Tamborine Oxenford rd was used by the Cobb and Co company. There was a way station located here. The current building where the Thai rest and Pickers and Co cafe is located isnt the original general store, that was located in Siganto park, approximately where the white house is located, opposite the school of Arts. This store was demolished in a weather event and was rebuilt where it is now. The wagon rims on the Thai rest building are not stage coach rims as Cobb and co didnt use metal rims. They are likely from farming equipment. There are two buildings nearby, one now a house was the original butcher shop and the other where the sushi place is located was the early bakery, you can still see the ovens inside unless the most recent reno removed them.
