Wonderful images! I prefer sunrise to sunset for these reason: 1-the rest of the human world is in bed, less noise. 2-birds are more active, singing during morning. Even when fully involved in photography, my listening for bird song never stops. 3- usually less wind during morning. 4-I am not sure if I can accurately pinpoint this. Color seems better during morning…less pollution, but I may be imaging that. 5-blue hour light is more colorful during morning, at least to my eyes. Going from dark to light may make seeing the colors better than reverse. But again, am I imaging this?
Thanks Michael! The images were captured over two days, but it really was quite productive either way. I am usually lucky to get 1 image in a day haha.
Wow, you created so many beautiful images from that destination :O I would vote for the pictures with less fog. I love the foggy ones, but the pastel colours of the one on the left... absolutely brilliant!
I've said it before but you're my favorite photographer. You've got such an amazing eye and all your photos are beautiful. I also like the way you delivery your story on RU-vid. Very clean and inspiring. Thank you.
Beautiful photos and mystical atmosphere and even the music was mesmerizing. Both the foggy photos AND the ones with a clear atmosphere were lovely, but I think the ones without fog had a bit more punch. I am definitely more of an afternoon, twilight and night time / lowlight photographer , but I do sometimes get up before dawn to get the sunrises, but it's not so easy! Thanks for inspiring. - Lynda Power
Some really outstanding images, Michael! Every time I see a video from Madeira am always so impressed by those trees (and the wonderful foggy conditions). I really enjoy getting out for sunrise photography, as there are usually less people around and once I get going it’s a great way to start the day. Unfortunately, I often have difficulty dragging myself out of bed that early, so,end up shooting more sunsets!
So nice to know that a successful photographer has the same problem I do… my brain doesn’t start working until the sun rises. I can try to get those early morning photos but I find it frustrating. So maybe I can still do landscape photography. I’m going to search your channel for mid day tips. I would love to hear what you do during the day.
Nice to revisit Madeira through your photos. Funny how your images are completely different from mine, although I recognized several trees I also photographed there. Unfortunately on my first visit (for scouting purposes) to Fenal forest I had the best conditions (fog), but when I returned everything was just harsh blue sky. With hundreds of people walking around. Looking back, I should have taken more time to get familiar with the surroundings.
This is the kind of stuff that inspires me to go out and shoot. Thanks Michael! We gotta get you to +250k subs. Every one of these makes me go "I'd print that one in 20"x30" or larger".
I spent a 40 year career getting up early so I could sleep in sometimes in retirement. But no, I had to take up photography and get serious about it. It's a struggle, to be honest, to get up as early as I need to for morning images. When I do, it's totally worth it. Plus I don't end up guilt-tripping over getting up late, or not at all. Doesn't mean I like it, though.
Always MORE fog - for me! Because I find special conditions in the weather more interesting, especially when it comes to woods. But this area is so great, I envy you. Nearly every tree worth a "single portrait" or "two shot". Good work!
Just breath taking photos. Love what you did with them. I like the one in the fog although they are both great. I’m with you….not an early riser. Thanks for the video. Excellent job.
Michael, love all your videos. I have a really interesting idea for you, how could I best get in touch with you. I think you'll really enjoy my idea. 🤔😉
Fanal can be difficult and overwhelming and you definitely need time. I love all the photos and I have some of the same compositions, which makes me happy and proud..
Very inspiring video, and countless beautiful images, love the one at 12:49. But the three at 9:26,10:57, & 13:09 it's like you brought them to life like tree creatures out of Lord of the Rings. Brilliant & magical.
I don't have preference during sunrise or sunset, it will depend on what I want (orange+blue or pink+blue sky). But I feel better during sunrise, from astronomical dawn to golden hour because of the fresh air
Great video, I am a fan of the fog,but your picture where you wanted to know which I preferred. Very hard question because both shots had merit. Some I f the trees actually take on human expressions. Again great exposures thanks for sharing
I've never been disappointed by what Michael puts out. Great job! Where in Madeira is that beautiful location? I will have to consider the island for next holiday for sure ❤
Comparing the group of trees with and without fog (8:14), I'm going to go with "without fog". Weirdly, I feel there's a story there, that they're a group of friends of all different shapes and sizes, hanging out together. That said, in most other cases the fog really improved things
I love your photos and these trees!!! What a fairytale place! Do you happen to know what kind they are? I love your unusual compositions! I’m like you…not a morning person. It takes me s while to wake up even with coffee. By the afternoon I’m ready to go! I love all of your work! Good idea to scout ahead of time.
No way. That isn't Sneezy is it? The shot of the leaning trees got my attention. Someting about the foreground leaning tree got my attention(I know, I said that). But the other leaning trees just mad it all come together. If I didn't know better, I'd say you had those trees positioned there. Or, you did some good research composition wise. OK, Not going over board that you might not have ever been here before. But getting out does improve your chances of getting nice or great shots. Get out all you can.
Definitely sunrise, but where I live, sunrise comes as early as 5:30am in late June so it is always so hard to get up. But it is worth it when everything comes together.
I get up at 3 am every day, and I still struggle with sunrise. I love early mornings but I think the colder air just makes it more difficult for me to want to explore compositions in the morning.
Hi Michael some great thoughts and information ,with to much fog you can lose some of the detail I personally find early morning is best less distractions and a real sense of peace!
Beautiful video and images, as usual. As for me, I tend to get my best shots in the morning vs. the evening. I'm not really sure why, but suspect the transition from blue hour to golden hour stimulates my brain more than the other way around. Who knows!
Wow !!! What a fantastic set of images. I prefer late afternoon till sunset photography. We have some awesome thunderstorms here in South Dakota, which are frequent in the afternoon, and I love the adventure of the storm chase.
This is a bit of pareidolia, but I like the tree composition with less fog because it reminded me of parents (the taller trees) out for a walk with their kids. Weird, huh? 😊
I tend to be defeatist in the morning. It isn't that I don't want to get up and go find outstanding morning light and potentially fog. It is that I have often been disappointed that I haven't found "the shot" and ruined what would have been a good walk/hike trying to make it happen. Afternoon and going toward evening, I feel as if I have more hope. I can see what is happening with the clouds and the potential for great light. Then I get to decide what time I want to invest in photographing a landscape, or if I want to concentrate on shooting other things. You talked about scouting. There are times that is not possible if "the shot" needs to be at sunrise and you can only be there for one morning. I think of a trip a few years back to Maroon Bells. I could only be there for the morning. It was the only chance I had at mild conditions during the winter. What I had hoped for didn't happen. The trip wasn't a total waste. Some of my favorite black and white photos came from that trip. There was just no way to appropriately scout it myself to plan what I wanted to shoot in morning conditions.
Amazing video ... as painful as it is for me to get up (not much of a morning person as well) l do however enjoy and appreciate the peace, quiet and calmness that comes with the start of the day. I feel much more connected with nature. I do put more and more effort to do more sunrises than sunsets. And those afternoon naps get more and more refreshing ... lol
I love the trees with less fog, which is strange, but l love the colours & the lighting. The image with the single tree with the golden light is stunning! My other favourites are at 12:51 & 13:01.
I like both sunrise and sunset but sunrise does have the benefit of having morning mist and fog. Yeah you can fog in the evening but I find that is not as good to work with as morning fog.
I am more of a sunset 1st for dog river. I can get the sunsets the sun rises. I need to get up earlier earlier but also I have to have something worth shooting
8:24 in a way, i prefer it without fog, but in a way, I prefer it with the fog because it makes the trees stand away from each other, and it looks like that the tree does not look like that they are next to each other
I prefer sunrise as its less crowded and unlike you I think better in the morning and not as well at sunset. Both are great but sunrise to start a new day is hard to beat.
i had a spiritual dream of looking at trees, and they looked exactly like this 5:54

Great vid as always, the first time I saw those threes i ways blown away. Fun fact, I took almost the same shot as the one at minute 3:11 😂 but the fog you had looks fabulous!
