#soniclab #soma #terra
We were invited to visit Soma Sound Machines at their Warsaw factory and while we were there were shown the pre production model of the Terra - the unique and very sensitive instrument . Terra features twelve extremely sensitive nodes (cant think of what else to call them!) for playing pitches, plus five for modifying the timbre, there are also 7 modifier knobs which globally effect the sound with two being dependent on the algorithm used.
Despite the wooden case, Terra is a digital sound source and has multiple models which are played rather like instruments, each model has 64 variations. As usual, its a rather off the wall concept, but thats what makes Soma the way it is. In practice, its incredibly sensitive and flexible - reminds us of the Eagan Matrix instruments found in the Haken Continuum or the Osmose.
The Terra will be in production very soon and making its way into the stores.

Its Awesome that Vladimir made it with materials as natural organic as Oak wood. The sound frequencies Bends, Goes with the Grain of real Timber Wood.Versus synthetic plasticities that leaves the listener with less than is expected. Its full Soma within variations that pushes, then pulls it's own nuances, or sensitive, yet synthesis vibrations.Through Real instrumental tonal scales, that full on Resonates within alot more soulful, than not usually bargained for.

What if he and other electronic instrument builders would have a video output from the instrument to connect to a variety of monitors to see the what the parameters and knobs are doing? Further in the future the parameters could represent commands to a visual software so the audience would see visuals changing with what the musician is doing.

In the beginning, it all looks a bit too complicated for creating patches and / or playing it manually in a live situation. But the more you try, the more it opens up. Especially in Sessions with other musicians. Also, stuff like the Ornament 8 expands the traditional boundaries of their genres. All in all: thanks to Vlad and his team for providing with this - and combining solid craftsmanship with an adventurous mind. I fall exactly into Nick's demographic of people who have a little music but not a lot of keyboard. Once again, I am openly desirous of something I will never own. It ain't the heat, it's the cupidity.

I love this! What a wonderful musical instrument! Beautiful too. Definitely calls out for being touched. I want one!

the makers of analogue synths say:"our synth is 100% analogue of course.." - the makers of digital synths say:"our synth is 100% digital of course.." (Lol)

I had to check in to this video again. It came up as a suggested view for me several months ago and was my introduction to Soma. Since the Terra had not been released, I wondered what else they had to offer. I bought an Enner, then Lyra 8, Ornament 8, Pulsar 23, and just sent my payment on a Terra today. See what you did?

Someone with terrible neuropathy and all my tendons growing tighter and tighter as I age, then the vicious cycle of "Don't use, lose it". Yet, ironically becomes harder/harder so, string instruments or ones that required all finger movement just never worked out for me. I chose drums though to exert my creativity to the best extent I could. Close to a decade of not playing, I always think of the electric side of things just unsure where to start. New instruments like this really make me wish I hand "normal" hands, most instruments are made for.

can't anybody grow hair anymore? Nothing new here. Just a different package or format. Looks cool for that kinda thing though.

Still,... I do absolutely LOVE playing my beautiful grand piano. Chopin, Debussy, Bach, Peterson-Berger, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Grieg, Schumann, Hindemith, Scriabin, Prokofiev, Peter Warlock, etc... Yeah.

Vlad is very talented in his creations. Very different from the traditional synths of the past 60 years.

I love what SOMA does, and how they do it, but this one is not very attractive looking... sorry. Looks like a cutting board! But the size and shape are ergonomic I get it.
