Thanks for this Adam, I still remember the BBC ident from back in 97. it always scares when bbc domestic channels says "this is bbc television from london " or "this is bbc television"

ITV's sombre ident used a pre-recorded CA, that's why it was upbeat.

No logo has ever scared me. But the channel 4 one is definitely unsettling. Creepy, even. Scary if i do say so myself. Terrifying if may be so bold.

I want to thank Apple's retina display for making that ITV logo bright and clear!

Someone said (not sure how true) that the second ITV one is just the Kids Create ident just without the artwork. I think it works well in the context of the Creates ident set. Makes me wonder what the sombre idents for the 2006, 2010 and 2013 sets would've looked like.

Definitely not a Royalist (Irish) but losing someone is not very nice and this is very respectful, Adam.

Imagine what'll happen when the queen goes. Even those who aren't fond of her or the monarchy will be affected, but I think a month of this would be overkill.

I think the reason why the ITV announcement was too chirpy and upbeat for the occasion was the BBC and Channel 4 announcements were live and for the occasion, whereas the ITV announcement (at least the first one) was pre-recorded and generic.

I love this ident review episode. But i never seen it before. So somber yet so satisfying.

I live in Northern Ireland. When we first started hearing network ITV announcers in 2020, it was really jarring because they were, as you say, far too chirpy all the time.

Seems the black ITV logo one depends on the screen. On my phone it was indeed almost invisible, but on my TV it appeared as a black logo on a medium-dark grey background.

1:13 "there's a strict code newsreaders have to follow" - and then you give the most famous example when it *wasn't* followed. The newsreader shown was wearing a wrong colored tie to announce the death of the Queen Mother, and there was a great deal of criticism leveled afterward.

Welp. It happened. We all knew this day would come.

I didn't see that BBC1 ident. I only caught the BBC blue curtain on the day the death was announced. A variant on the red trailer boards with the colour swirling from Oneness, but the circular layers make it look like it was produced during the last days of the Circles. Maybe it was? I saw the second ITV variant on the funeral coverage. I think the announcer just has a voice that sounds upbeat even when he's being serious. He speaks very slowly like that when introducing UTV News in NI. The first variant really is taking respectful black to the extreme, to the point where it unintentionally becomes comical. It works fine like that with Channel 4 with its moving parts, but not the static ITV. It could have done with the logo being cast in a lighter colour to stand out, but it's almost as if bosses feared it would be accused of looking too jolly if it wasn't all completely black. The second variant addresses this, indeed I wonder if it is actually an existing ITV Creates ident cast in black and white. As for how they come across, compared to previous instances of royal interruption, I think these go so hard on the serious brief that they - again, unintentionally - appear slightly frightening or intimidating rather than sombre. Channel 4's, I saw when I realised Countdown was still being shown on the day of the announcement. It both works and doesn't work for me. It doesn't work because the usual feature of the '2015 Blocks' design, that the blocks move around slightly as if some gravitational force is pulling them around seems inappropriate even with the relatively slow movement of the blocks, and for me the static completed 4 from the news would have been better, or even just the blocks sitting there as they are with no movement. It does work because it has a clear contrast of shades to convey the seriousness of the occasion, and unlike ITV's, you can see the logo, or the block pile, since this is Channel 4. A lot of effort went into these, more so than even in 1997, so praise to the channels for going to the trouble. Though it can be explained by the news being more relevant to Britain, in Ireland RTE One simply ran a regular ident with a serious "You're watching RTE One."

Make another version, focused on the Queen

I think the death of princess Diana may have been the first major piece of news I was aware of as a kid. That or the handover of Hong Kong from Britain to China. While looking for ad breaks on RU-vid in the 2010s, I did find some continuity from defunct kids satellite channel TCC (which closed in 1998) from the day Diana's death was announced. Business as usual, but a corner of the screen had text saying to turn to the BBC for an important announcement. One other channel, Auction World TV, actually went dark the day the Queen Mother's death was announced! They just displayed a card with text explaining the situation. You may also remember the black logo OK magazine used for their issues honoring the memories of Jade Goody and Michael Jackson. 2009 was my final year of college! You also remember any programming aired to honor the memory of dead celebs? I hear in 1997, after Wilbert Awdry died, the BBC re-aired the 1995 documentary The Thomas The Tank Engine Man, I also know Channel 5 aired Moonwalker the week Michael Jackson died, Cartoon Network aired Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory shortly after Gene Wilder died, and the weekend after Bruce Forsyth died, Challenge marathoned the game shows he hosted!

Good thing you didn’t include channel five as the continuity announcer said that the schedule was changing, “In light of recent events” and only have a banner saying what has happened. Sky one was the most disrespectful as it kept it’s programming going.

If you put the itv ident at the lowest brightness then you just see the ident. The visuals just cease to exist.

The Intro is somber in a way to make the viewers cry about the passing of Prince Philip.

BBC: yeah alright, I like the muted reds. It's nice. The ITV ones are "scary". However, without the colour, my eyes are not picking out the cursive itv and have gone square. Four is nice. I really like the contrast.

It's so grey (except bbc one ident) who might have been changed after the announcement of the Death of Prince Phillip because it's quite sad and quite impressive for these on BBC One, ITV and Channel 4. Heck, even ITV has the still ident of a dim background that shown a Black ITV Logo at the center and another Ident that showed a slow pan of a grey ITV logo but in 3D because of that model reminds me from ITV Kids Create. Anyway, Long live to Prince Phillip and god bless in UK.

So, let’s see. BBC One’s ident was quite professional and the colour wasn’t taken out entirely. I think ITV actually did a good job with their ident, having the announcer sound more positive than negative not only helps keep spirits high in a tough time but also doesn’t sound flat-out annoying. Sometimes sounding too sombre and depressing can become very irritating to listen to, you might as well be listening to a singer moaning whilst singing a dreary song. I guess Channel 4’s ident works but the continuity announcer is extremely sombre. He sounds like he’s about to cry but is restraining himself from tears meaning he ends up sounding extremely wimpy and annoying. Not to mention the ident itself looks more like something you’d see when the channel is off air instead of something you’d see before the funeral of an important person who has just died meaning if you can’t hear the continuity announcer because you’re hard of hearing or even just deaf, you might be mistaken for thinking you’re watching a channel which is temporarily going off air.

I reckon the "version 2" of the ITV ident will have been a hurried re-make and replacement for the first one, after various people will have said "I can't see anything here at all". Meanwhile I think Channel 4's pile of bricks is completely inappropriate. They should simply show the channel's logo, which was still officially a '4' numeral made out of the bricks, and not do anything 'clever' with it at all. It would be interesting to know what the exact Ofcom etc requirements or policy are and have been for this sort of thing. The reason I say this is that in 1999, the channel then known and branded as "Channel 3 North East" reverted for a couple of days to calling itself "Tyne Tees Television", and even North East Tonight was renamed "Tyne Tees News" IIRC. The graphics weren't changed, but the announcements etc were - which was distractingly jarring. It felt as if either (a) the policy was not to say anything other than the official legal name for the station during a period of mourning, and anything that counted as promotional branding had to be omitted, or (b) they had pre-planned and approved wording for announcements in the event of a royal death, and no-one had thought to update it when the channel got renamed. I do wonder which it was. There used to be videos of this on RU-vid (or somewhere else) but I haven't been able to track them down for many a year since, sadly. My favourite mourning ident, which was how I ended up watching this - even though sadly it didn't feature - was one created for the LWT 1996-1999 branding, in which the logo is fully formed-up but the swirl in the background continues to move, and the 'sparkly' part of the post-form-up soundtrack bed plays. Somewhat sombre, fitting for Diana but perhaps it wouldn't have been considered sombre enough for Elizabeth II.

bbc is trying to keep on looks on viewers even a lots of complaints of normal programs did not air,and it's so suprise on channel 4 very likes for viewers to be go on air on normal program,so you think of itv is bad?
