I think we would all rather see you deadlift all the books on your bookshelf than read them

I can't possible express in words how much that means to me. It is something I strive for with my own students and sometimes don't feel as though I'm doing a good job. Thank you for the kind words it genuinely means the world to me!

Loved hearing about New York review books!! Super interesting and the type of books I really enjoy. Kind of unsure where to start with their books, a video about them would be very cool. Also big fan of Yukio Mishimi and Japanese fiction in general :)

Thank you so much for the kind words! As I am still new to NYRB's, I would definitely recommend going through their catalogue on their website and seeing what interests you! It's super easy to navigate and there is always a ton of cool new stuff to explore! What other Japanese fiction have you read so far and would recommend?

I was just organizing my bookshelves and decided to do the same thing as I realize I've only read about half of them. Sometime I think YT's algorithm is a mind reader! LOL

I can relate to being a slow reader. I average ~32 books a year if I don't have a reading slump. I read classic and postmodern literature so it's usually the type that benefits from slow reading. I guess I could read more books if I picked up genre and contemporary more often but I'm not entirely convinced. I balance out the low number with the fact that I pick up big daunting books on a consistent basis. Knocking those out gives me that game achievement satisfaction that others might get from a big yearly book total. And of course the pleasure from the books themselves is the main motivator.
@colorlesswonderland
@colorlesswonderland 2 года назад
I'm annoyed that we exist within a reading climate that dictates that reading ONLY 32 books in a year is considered slow? That's over two books a month! That's not slow at all! I read about that many this year! What books have you been reading recently?
@benpessoa4013
@benpessoa4013 2 года назад
@@colorlesswonderland I'm finishing up Don Quixote right now. Earlier this month I read Selected Stories by Robert Walser and The Swerve by Stephen Greenblatt.

I’m really curious about Less Than Zero, I watched the movie with Robert Downey Jr. because I heard it inspired the Weeknd song of the same name. I was disappointed but from what I’ve read it wasn’t a very faithful adaptation so I have a lot of hope for the book and think I’ll pick it up sometime. Also, good timing with The Sailor Who Fell from Grace With the Sea because I just read it last week and feel the same way. I read The Sound of Waves this past summer too but am still slowly getting into his work. If you haven’t watched the Paul Schrader film Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters then I would highly recommend it, it’s what introduced me to him in the first place and it has an amazing score as well. Edit: saw the other comment about Mishima lol

I actually had no idea they made a movie version of Less than Zero with RDJ as Julian of all characters which is super compelling. I think you would love the book so let me know when you check it out! And yep haha love me some Mishima! I think the movie is due for a rewatch now

You’ve been reading Mishima’s work, have you seen the film Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters? Would be interested in your thoughts on it!
@colorlesswonderland
@colorlesswonderland 2 года назад
I actually watched that movie and bought the criterion for it before I read any of mishima's books or knew anything about him really! I only watched it because I loved Schrader's other movie first reformed and had to check out his other work. I LOVED a life in four chapters and have been eagerly waiting for the right time to rewatch it. There are sections of the movie that left me truly breathless!
@faithgirard2070
@faithgirard2070 2 года назад
@@colorlesswonderland that’s interesting, I also loved first reformed, but I haven’t seen A life in four chapters yet. I guess I wasn’t sure if it would be better to go into it having read at least a book or two of his. From your reviews though, I definitely want to pick one up very soon! Thanks! Also I love your channel, it’s very refreshing :)

Thank you so much and that is my bad! NYRB is the New York Review of Books and they are a publication company that takes smaller and out of print contemporary fiction! All the books on the top left of my shelf are from that company! Sorry about the confusion!

Heya, huge fan of the channel. I know your a huge movie buff. Do you have any recommendations of books about movies such as a collection of movie reviews?
@colorlesswonderland
@colorlesswonderland 2 года назад
Hey Allan! If you are looking for a collection of movie reviews you can't go with Roger Ebert's "The Great Movies" series. I believe it is 4 books and each book is just a bunch of his reviews of classic movies! Ebert's writing is incredible and he has a ton of hidden gem movies that I've never heard of before. Those would be my go to recommendations for books that are a collection of movie reviews! I hope this is what you are looking for!
