He's one of the best finger pickers known. He once came out to church I use to attend and I had the privilege of playing with him, I played the bass. Of course it was back in 1995.
The song that starts at 1:38 is a Chet Atkins version of "Poor People of Paris", with "Paris" being pronounced as "pa-REE. The lyrics & music were adapted by Jack Lawrence in 1954 from the French language song "La goualante du pauvre Jean" (sometimes called "Jean's Song") Thanks for posting Doyle's music.
I agree that Doyle is right up there with Doyle and Thom Bresh. I liked how well Doyle put mistakes into his playing and make a joke out of it. It is not easy to play mistakes when you always play so perfectly.
imagine Jerry Reed, Scotty Anderson, Vince Gil, Tommy Emanuel, Albert Lee, Toye Caldwell, Steve Gaines, Charlie Daniels, Billy Gibbons, all of these people jamming together?
There is no best...its categorical.....and most of the living guitar population are never going to be in Doyle's Chets,or Tommy's catergory.....so just enjoy what you do or listen to.....its really the differing styles that make music fun no matter the instrument......
