Great talk for any engineer/manager, indeed it should also be rewatched every few years!

Such a great talk. Practical advice here to nearly anyone (programmer or not) working in an organisation that has a tech team

I argue this is one of the best talks at London Clojurians and is pure gold.

Gradual quality accretion is something that I think Clojure helps people do better than other languages. Edit: Just got to the part where the speaker also mentioned the same.

A programmer's role is to either make other workers redundant, ideally, or to enable them to accomplish more in less time and at a lower cost. Managers ensure that programmers and processes align with the interests of the business owner. Essentially, they represent the owners and wield considerable power on behalf of them. This explains why only a few managers are needed to oversee many workers. Therefore, some managers ensure that employees show up at work, make them feel comfortable, select new workers, identify useless workers, while others translate the owner's interests into goals that are understandable for workers in the various domains (such as marketing, IT, etc.). The higher up the hierarchy, the more aligned people are with the owner's interests, the higher the salary. And the less relevant the operational details of the business become. Ultimately it doesn't matter if profits are made from selling online services or cars. This is what some people overlook maybe.

On the first point, I would like to say that yes, all tools have downsides. However, there are tools whose downsides didn’t originate as a trade-off, but rather as a result of unconsciously bringing what’s familiar into a newly created tool. There are so far tools that are objectively much better than others in their field. And we should improve precisely these tools, preferably by learning from the other awesome tools. Let’s enumerate the best so far: 1. Embedded and low-level: Zig. 2. Theoretical: Haskell. 3. Server systems: Erlang/Clojure. Does the world need more than these languages? No. Moreover, if Haskell, Erlang and Zig were Lisps, nobody could say that there is a language that is better at some tasks than them, since they could just be extended to be semantically like that better language. So, we can all do objectively better, and we should strive to do that.

Peter , how do you see clojurescript nowadays, in comparison for example with the React/Typescript ecosystem ? In which case you would use cljs instead of TS/React ?

I like the 'context' argument, and I think the 'context' argument could also apply to your statement about `manager`. e.g. is it really need to organize an organization in a way that have a role called manager exists. when you swap the nouns manager and company to king, president, councilor, kingdom, country, government...you will discover the fun ; )

I don't think manager is the king in this setting though, I'd say they are more like a mayor, but in many cases they're really just use case specialists. I work at a company where they are absolutely crucial for bridging the gap between a customer(who knows nothing of about our product) and the engineers(who know everything, but often don't want to be bothered to explain). I've seen managers be the most valuable employee, but you can also tell when they are more upward, power oriented.
