Hello everybody and welcome!
What if we put an external instrument into a feedback chain? How does it interact with a feedback and viceversa?
In the third video of my series dedicated to no input techniques I show you how to put some external instruments into a feedback chain and the consequences on sound and timbre.
Can no input techniques be useful as sound processing tools?
I make a couple of practical examples using different sound sources (acoustic and electronic ones) and share with you an improvised session with a setup based on feedbacks, acoustic and electronic instruments all togheter.
If you have any question feel free to ask in the comments, I'm more than happy to help you in your journey into this fascinating world!
All of the sounds recorded in this video are also available as a sample pack on my Patreon. If you want to support my work and get access to albums and videos previews, music podcasts, sample packs and news on my projects, that's the place where you can find them! Thank you for your support, it really means a lot!

Hey man, I just wanted to say: I respect the hell out of you for making these tutorials and it breaks my heart to see all these huge RU-vidrs knocking off your techniques without giving you any credit. For what it’s worth: I see you and I’ll make sure all of my students know who the real OG is.
@AndreijRublev

I really appreciate that! My goal is to create informative videos so it would be great if they reach also your students! But to be clear: I didn't invented anything, this technique has been around for a long time, probably I just started a little niche trend that will last a couple of weeks cause of the algorythm hahaha. Anyway it's fine too, I hope the use of feedbacks and no input techniques will be useful and inspirational for people who don't know them (even through the work of other youtubers). It is such a vast field and can be applied from experimental music to sound design, to whatever so more people knows it, more creativity is sparkled, the more I'm happy! Thanks again for your nice words! They mean a lot!

I love the fact that there is a sort of filtering but also the harmonic content of the voice interacts so well with the feedback, changing its harmonic content as well. Lot of possible explorations there, for sure.

This is an amazing topic and with each video I think of more questions and experiments like: What if the mixer has motorized faders and by switching between saved settings you basically will be able to automate a modulation? What if you put a compressor with a side chain input to duck the feedback rhythmically? Can you starve the mixer's power supply so you change its sound? This video series is a lot of fun! :)
@AndreijRublev
@AndreijRublev Год назад
Super interesting questions. For me the "control" side of this technique is slightly less interesting in terms of composition/performance. I''m more into the improvisation, human/machine interplay. But making some tests starting from these questions can be very cool!

motorized faders, as i understand them, just represent the value of a digital control signal with their position. they don't actually have a resistive element inside. so I don't think they can be used to automate a smooth modulation, because despite them moving at less-than-instantaneous speeds, the control values are switching nearly instantaneously when you, for instance, load a saved scene on a digital mixer.

Hello there and friendly greetings! I know it might sounds trivial but every tutorial about the No Input Setup reveal something new and something to ponder about, for me at least! For istance, I'm a big fan of dark ambient, electro industrial and ambient industrial soundscapes and I'm absolutely eager to experiment what would happen to plug the outpot of some of my drones to a NIS! Also, as a rock lover I am seriously thinking the same about my electric guitar+multieffect pedal coupled to a NIS! Unfortunately at the present time got no bucks to invest into second or third hands mixer to torture and use as guinea pigs but soon as my wallet becomes plump again, I need to get a couple of trashy mixer to sacrifice and start my journey! There is something inexplicable in this technique that attract me so much! Too bad I won't be able to partecipate to the next event you mention... I trust that there will be more, maybe this summer! Have a great week and again thanks for sharing!

Thank you for these great tutorials, your videos are very informative and surprising. A quick question: I understand that you plug your drumbrute into the loop of your no input mixer and that you use the pedals to modulate all that. However I was wondering how you connect your pedals. Using the effect send -> pedal chain -> input channel? Directly on the output channel of the microphone or the drummachine? And what do you think about using another effect send to use these (and therefore return send) to measure the impact of the effects pedal chain?
@AndreijRublev
@AndreijRublev 3 месяца назад
Thanks for your kind words! In this video I used the effects pedal between the no input setup and the audio interface (the path is roughly: main out of the mixer > effect pedals > audio interface), so they don't interact with the feedback' signal chain. However you can totally put them in the signal chain of the feedback, as you wrote in your example (whatever mixer output > effects > channel input) or even between your instrument and the mixer (drumbrute > effects > channel input). The possibilities are a lot in terms of patching. Experimenting with different type of routing is always fun and can lead to unexpected and interesting results!
@AndreijRublev
@AndreijRublev 3 месяца назад
You can also consider that in a mixer there are a lot of inputs that you can use both to make external sound sources interact with the feedback chain or to patch the mixer signal back into itself, and outputs (in many units they are even more than the inputs) and every output can be used to send the signal back into the mixer to create more complex interactions. That's basically and endless playground and for me it is always a lot of fun exploring it.

Great thank you! I tried to add a guitar to my mixer before but got no sound at all from either the mixer or guitar. From then I assumed it could not be done. It was a while ago so I don't recall how I setup the patch either. In regards to how to get an input working, do you need to use a specific channel? Do you need a specific no input patch to work with it? Sorry I don't really know the language to ask the right questions here
@AndreijRublev
@AndreijRublev Год назад
If you add an electric guitar to a mixer with a no input patch you can use whatever channel you want but it have to be one with a gain control, so you can amplify the signal of the electric guitar.

Hi, i just a beginner for this no input idea. And i have question, how about we play some sample from laptop/mobile phone, is that dangerous for the laptop/mobile phone? I mean like channel 1 and 2 we use for playing sample from laptop/mobile phone, and another channel we use for feedback idea. Thank you 🙏🏻
@AndreijRublev
@AndreijRublev 6 месяцев назад
No problem with that! The principle is the same as if you plug a guitar or a drum machine or whatever, like you can see in this video so there are no issues for your phone. The mixer becomes a sort of effect/sound generator.

Yooo! Thanks for the video...and all your others! I think someone asked below but just wanted to clarify, are the instruments run into an input on the no input mixer?? and can you control their levels on the mixer? Thanks again!
@AndreijRublev
@AndreijRublev Год назад
Thank you! Yes, the instruments are connected directly into one of the channels of the no input mixer. You can control the instrument's volume as in a normal mixer with the volume fader and the gain knob. Of course you have to crank it up a lot because the rest of the audio signal is pretty hot, but still you can control how much of the instrument you want to have in the mix.
