Pat is an amazing jazz musician. I have good memories of seeing the Pat Metheny Group at three northern CA venues in the mid '80s, the best of which was the Old Paul Masson Winery (now called the Mountain Winery) in Saratoga - - a magical performance. In those days their signature song was “Phase Dance” from their 1978 album. I highly recommend “The First Circle,” Tell It All,” and “End of the Game” from the 1984 album First Circle.

Pat Metheny is a treasure trove - a great Jazz parallel to the world of Pink Floyd, always painting wondrous dreamscapes. And don’t forget what Jazz means: so much of what we hear is great players improvising on the spot, negotiating with each other on the spot, with whatever basic framework they’re given. That’s the magic and genius of the whole thing. Jazz in all its flavors always takes that constant wonderful risk. Glad you’re growing to like it. 🥰👍🏻

As an old Kansas City Kid, Pat Metheny is a local (Lee's Summit, MO, close enough) boy makes good. As an archetypal impoverished (well, not rich) college student, I saw him play for free several times at Brush Creek as part of the K. C. Parks & Rec, Concerts in the Parks series ("And please walk on the grass."). After I graduated and had a regular income, we could pay to see him and distinguished colleagues at various local venues. Good memories, great music.

Great choice. And what you said at the end @ 17:20, that's why instrumental music is so cool to me, since it has no lyrics, it allows the listener to externalize whatever is inside oneself. It's like a sonic Rorschach in a way - since every person fills in 'the blanks' w/ their own imagination, the actual musical experience is a personal journey that often ends up telling more about the listeners themselves than the anything else.

I'm a big Deadhead and I would love if you reacted to a Grateful Dead song...preferably live. They are known for their long improvisational jams so they're songs have large portions of instrumental parts to them. Their live songs are usually long so it's tough to pick one that might be fitting for you to react to. But I suggest checking something out by them. Maybe someone can help me out with a choice of song? Perhaps a Morning Dew?

@wavelength7503
@wavelength7503 3 года назад
@@MrBojangles110 I'm not sure what" OT " was reference to, and did find it unusual to include Oscar P. The out standing virtuoso who played with Oscar Peterson was Herb Ellis. Seen Oscar live play back in the day, and many of the great icons of jazz music. To acknowledge Oscar say you have an understanding of the talent and complexity,/ beauty of a jazz musician what they bring to the ear if a listener. In Ottawa Canada they have a bronze statue of Oscar Peterson, his piano, siting playing, with his music playing from a speaker system. A concert to watch, that will show the depth and intricate style of Jazz guitar, if your interested. THE GREAT GUITAR'S ; Barney Kessel, Charlie Byrd and Herb Ellis-11-07-82- World Of. I don't believe the order is of any significance,. These guys are icons/ equivalents, but have their own style in this music. This concert is a tribute to some who paved the way in jazz guitar, ones who everyone emulated, and grew from. Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery. Having rambled all that. I guess this video is about Pat and his talent and contribution to fusion Jazz. He's extremely talented in every way in music. TO add. If you're a Jazz buff/ connoisseur. Take a trip to the Montreal Jazz festival. The biggest in the world according to Guinness Records. And the home of Oscar Peterson. As well. Give a listen to a New upcoming Jazz band/ group. Led by two females, saxist, trumpet. Out standing for their age group. "KOKOROKO". is the group. Jazz the ultimate in music,as is classical.

Yeah you know it's okay my dear the only thing is you're really want get steered in the right direction just listen to songs off of the album off ramp yeah my favorite is the song 18 and then there's this other very haunting song called au lait sometimes I can't even listen to it because it has so much emotion in it for me for some reason it is such a beautiful song and that it has this transition which is transformative that's all I can say it's the same song Just reorganized in such a positive way the whole point is this music has that structure that has that energy and most important of all it has that emotion I think my two favorite songs were probably written by Lyle Mays he's gone now unfortunately he was a keyboard player I believe you know Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius played with Joni Mitchell and did a live album that was absolutely astonishing so I guess what I'm getting at is sometimes Jazz can just go through the motions but I prefer it when it goes through the emotions and when you hear these two songs you'll see what I mean that one song eighteen there's this one part where the Baseline is doing something and the keyboard is like in a different key in a way it just the song breaks all these rules I love that all right my dear girl listen the only problem is if you're going to get here music from RU-vid ironically the songs are on premium Wouldn't you know it? But if you Google it you'll find it on other formats the one I tried was some I don't know it was Chinese or some other Asian country but there it was it is amazing I actually had this record on vinyl I probably have it in storage somewhere which brings me to another thing I think anybody who reacts music I think it would be better if somehow you can do it in a medium that's not MP3 if that is at all possible and then you can hear the richness and the depth and the intricacies of the music instead of the compressed version especially if you listen to that French song I can't see the name Google doesn't Translate French at least not in the US all right my dear sweet human I'll check you on the next drop

Pat was using his Orchestrion a robotic instrument ensemble for all the percussion parts besides Marcus Gilmore the live drummer. Someone above placed this in the Jazz Fusion camp, and I think I'd respectfully argue that. Metheny/Mays compositions were so uniquely...theirs... unlike almost anything done before, or since. They were their own camp - May's loss could legitimately be considered a tragedy, on his own he was brilliant, in combination with Metheny they achieved transcendence. Sorely missed.

@@fredkrissman6527 Actually I'm glad you picked up on that, Fred. I find the word 'legendary' much bandied about for just about every memorable performer of the past. 'Classic' is another. I prefer to use the old-fashioned sense of a legendary figure being someone who existed mostly through hearsay and may or may not have been real, at least in the contemporary imagination - Robin Hood, King Arthur, Jesus Christ, etc. Jaco was very real and well-documented, like most other musical ''legends' and therefore doesn't qualify. 'Semi-legendary' was my somewhat clumsy and ineffective attempt to address this trend. Sorry - quite the pedant aren't I? As for mythic, I would reserve that for the ancient gods and their ilk. But I absolutely agree with your assessment of JP's status.

Just want to tell you I think it's cool your Dad played jazz for you as a kid. Maybe you can do a reaction to some of those songs you liked. I bet you know a lot of tunes that I don't and would love to hear them.

You must listen to Dirty Loops, "Breakdown" , 'Next to You' and many others. If you dig Pat and hsi keyboard genius, the late great Lyle Mays. You will really dig Dirty loops. Let me know what you think, david
