Some of my favourite watercolour artists and books - discussed.
I have been s very busy putting the finishing touches to my new course being launched on Wednesday 8th of February 2023. It left me little time to paint and create for this channel. Also, I had a question from one of you about my books and what I'd recommend.
So I created this film discussing just a few of my favourite artists and books. I could chat about these things forever but held it back to a few. I do hope that you all find the discussion useful.
My new course
Called 'Learning to Paint Skies in Watercolour'
with over 7 hours of painting tutorials to help you when it comes to understanding how to use watercolour to create better skies, indeed great skies in your watercolour paintings. Each lesson throughout is packed full of hints, tips and tricks to really help out.
It launches on Wednesday 8th of February 2023.
It will be open as a pre-launch so that you can register your interest on Wednesday 1st of February 2023.
for the first 67 people to buy this new title, they will get a great early-bird discount and the course will have an additional 1 hour's worth of content.
go to
www.paulappsfineart.co.uk and register from the 1st, or email me.

I could listen to these type of 'reviews' an entire evening! For me as a beginner the work of these artists set the horizon line for me (waaaaay off in the faaaaaar distance...). It is really nice to at least HEAR their names. I am always a little shocked when younger people don't know people like Plato, Aristotle or C.G. Jung anymore. Today I learned that I am an ignorant myself when it comes to painters names.... Thank you for this enlightening video! B.t.w. I have a 'thing' with my books too. When I see someone breaking the spine of a nice book or pawing through it with grubby fingers, or bend a corner as a bookmark - my OCD goes through the roof... Same with my paper. And with the brushes. And with the paints. And with... well, basically everything....

I do have quite a few of these artists books and most of these books are second hand and very cheep. Looking through these books I see Turner especially in the sky's. I would love it if you did do some copies of theses paintings. I found this so so interesting and worthwhile listing to. I don't get many opportunities to talk to and listen to artist so I really enjoyed this superb. Please don't forget Alwyn Crawshaw He got me started painting

Thank you Paul for a great insight to some of the great artists who have inspired and influenced you over the years. I too share your excitement for turning pages in a book to find wonderful paintings and trying to decipher how the artist went about creating them, as you say it's a great way to find inspiration and to extend your knowledge of painting techniques. Somehow I don't get the same feeling when looking at images on the Internet, a book has a certain magic about it! I'd love to hear more of the books and artists that have excited you in different mediums and to see and hear your thought process on working out how to replicate one of their paintings.

A good source for a lot of those books is World of Books or WOB for short. I bought 3 Rowland Hilders for less than £15. A lot of the books you showed you can buy there. Would be interesting to see your oil books. 👍

I was lucky enough to score The Watercolors of John Singer Sargent by American Carl Little, published 1998, for three Aussie dollars. I find the missing “u” disconcerting. Recently discovered Anne Blockley and her father,John. Thanks for the book tour.

Great video Paul, wonderful to see your enthusiasm for these artists - and the books. A shame James Fletcher-Watson didn't get a mention, another of my personal triumvirate of water colour hero's. Wesson & Seago both born 1910, JF-W 1913, so these three were direct contemporaries. Chamberlain & Yardley were definitely the next generation, both born 1933. We could debate for hours, I suspect, the relative merit of each, yet agree that they were fabulous artists. Suffice to say I'm a fan of them all too, and have many of the same books in my own, very much smaller, collection. RR also features. Like you I am always inspired when I look through them, there's always something to learn. Keep up the good work, and many thanks for this video.

Hello Paul, I've really enjoyed this video as I'm quite a book worm. You mentioned using them to do studies, which I still have difficulty in doing as it was drilled into me at school not to copy.Your enthusiasm has really rubbed off on me, so I shall definitely be investing in some of these books. Thankyou for igniting My enthusiasm 😊

This video came across my RU-vid feed and now I’m a new subscriber. I do watercolor, drawing, and am learning soft pastels. I’d love to see your favorite books on soft pastels. Now I need to go find some of your favorite watercolor books to buy. They are fantastic. I think I might have a couple on my shelves so I better go look before I purchase something that I already have! 😂
