@@Gymnasticsismyhome I dunno, we've seen Ian's face mid gymnastics... it doesn't always look like this ;) And I had no idea I got so many likes, my comment was just meant to be funny. I understand the point is for it to look effortless. Ian asked for us to give an opinion and her landing just looked more... effortless. Wish I could look so grateful when I was flying off my horses back over the years but pretty sure I just looked like Ian when he fell like a sack of potatoes rag doll style off the pommel horse :)
@@pieceaisa5046I agree her chest was up and she did a better job but- and I say this as a MASSIVE maroney fan, she steps too quickly out of the stick which is why I think she ended up getting that deduction. To truly prove a stick you have to stay there for a second or two before saluting. Watching her do the vault that time, it could easily be assumed that her turning and saluting so fast was because she didn’t quite have the stick and needed to step out of it quickly. I LOVE her tho and I viscerally remember watching this vault on tv and being soooo gutted that she was denied the perfect 10
@@pieceaisa5046 Her landing was more impressive yes but she didnt stick it as good as him. She stepped out too quickly. Its literally called STICKING and she definitely landed better but it looked like he had better control because he stayed there for a while. Thats why he stuck it better

@@TheJackOfAllTrades777that’s not to say she couldn’t spin faster. After all she performed the 3.5 on floor. She spun as fast as she needed to to avoid over rotating. She also had ample room to open up for the landing, which is what makes her vault so impressive. I always thought she would be the first to successfully land the triple twisting Yurchenko, but alas.

@@echotech9381 not true, I do gymnastics and I know for sure she lost 0.10 points at least because she didn't hold it enough and the judges won't let that slide
You can really see the effect of the high center of gravity on the men when they land almost anything, be it a vault or a tumbling pass on the floor. They always land with their feet apart and it always takes them a second to make sure they're balanced since so much of their weight is above their hips. In comparison the women land like lawn darts with their feet right together.
the reasons men take longer is to show that they have stopped moving and are in a stick position. I am a male gymnast and generally it isn’t about balancing but about showing the judges that you are balanced. I can walk away from any landing super quick and it would be even easier to do.
That’s partly because men and women have different centers of gravity. Men often have lower chests on landings because they carry more weight in their upper bodies.
Of course she did, she was way higher and has more time to perform the movemnt. If you pay attention to the comparison, she starts the jump earlier and lands later.
And the fact is kohei doesn't need to go as high or have as much power because it's not as hard as a vault for him as her. Same reason when people are trying to stick a back tuck they don't give it as much power as a dub dub it's all relative to the goal at hand which is having the cleanest vault which in reality is kohei's
this is why I love your content, I'm subscribed, and I like every video despite not caring about gymnastics previously. you always highlight and give props to female gymnasts, athletes from other sports, and your own teammates in such an objective and sportsmanlike way. You're not afraid to show your missteps, or where other people have done better than you, and you just come off as so genuine, humble, and confident at the same time. Anyone who watches your videos can see that you're a great guy.

The height that she got was crazy. And she went into her landing position on the way down just because her body knew it was gonna stick the landing. Wild
I like the way Maroney lands this iconic vault. She knew what she did as she swung her arms open into salute. She was feeling herself as she should have been
I was gonna be like "lets not compare, theyre both obviously super awesome at this!" But that landing she did was so clean. There was barely a pause to make sure she was balanced
I believe that was because she had too much momentum and was trying to cover that. Gymnastics is something where you’d want a short pause from what I’ve seen, and how judges are 😅
This is still the greatest Olympic moment I ever saw. I remember watching it live and seeing her fly so high and land effortlessly in less than a second.
She did- no doubt. Table was shorter and she got higher and she did not bend at all on her landing. Her feet touched the mat and she did her salute. Perfection.
That's because he is a lot heavier. Id argue him doing the same thing with a lower height jump is more impressive because he has less air time to do every spin and stick the landing than she does. However she did this with a broken foot so at this point shes flexing lol.
@@ruiribeiro8010 there are many women who are lighter than her and still can’t get the height she gets. Kohei is definitely a faster twister. In fact I’d say he’s the best twister in gymnastics. But height is where it’s at. Because she’s lighter, she has to work harder to press down on that springboard to get any lift from it. He may twist faster, but her block is better
He is my favorite gymnast of all time, but on this one I think she did it better because of the height and because she makes the twisting look so smooth and natural.
I will back Maroney as the best vault for the rest of my life, but to be fair Kohei wasn’t a vault specialist. One of the best in the sport of all man kind for sure. Still impressive from both of them!
I thought for sure she was going to get a 10 on that one. If you look at the judges faces the one lady w the glasses her mouth was hanging open, so Maroney in my opinion she just made it look easy but catapulted off the vault so high…both super talented gymnasts though❤
@kharismamessam7177 Mostly due to how harshly these arhletes are judged, every little aspect(the landing, sprint, jump, and swing) is all taken into consideration for scoring. Her score loss was due to her sprint and landing, both of which were by no means perfect(she couldn't fully stick her landing as she built up to much momentum for her to remain stable within such a small time period). This is why you see her give a quick appluase to the judges and quickly go back to a normal standing stance not even a second later(having too much kenetic energy/momentum for her to handle in such a small time frame). This means she couldn’t fully handle the landing, therefore taking off 0.1 to 0.3 points alone(excluding all the other minor factors that led to further point reduction).
Now you need to see if you can find a male gymnast that does the yurchenko double pike and compare it to the Biles II… Simone gets insane height and impeccable form!
her landing is actually robotically clean. Look at her arms and feed and how perfectly symmetrical she finished. Mckayla ate, and abolished the existence of crumbs.
It's incredible that, having a lower height in his vault, Kohei Ichimura got to make the same movements as McKayla. Both of them are wonderful gymnasts!! ❤
In kohei’s defence the clip of him doing it was on a 2010 vault whereas McKayla did on a 2012 vault table. There were significant design improvements from 1 to the other. I’m not saying that what McKayla’s vault wasn’t amazing but it’s not an accurate comparison either.
@MaxIronsThird that's not how physics works. It's all relative to how much power you put into the board and table and kohei didn't put as much power into both of those becauzd he didn't need the extra height, rotation ect to do the vault perfectly
@@evandavis7139 If it was just that, he would also have jumped higher, bc he almost landed mid spin, he definitely needed a bit more height. from what i know, women in this category always jump higher than men.
I never tire of watching that vault. Maroney looks like she’s drifting down from outer space on that landing. No wonder, these great angles show just how high she truly was. One for the ages.
I think hers was better ONLY by the arms before landing. He had 1 arm out earlier and noticable whereas hers stay tucked and out together. Her height is INCREDIBLE which also allows her to spin a little more "gracefully" where his is more powerhouse speed on the twists. Both are absolutely amazing 👏
Her height and control, and his speed and power are mind boggling. Idk how these things are graded but she made it look graceful and effortless. He made it look like a crater would be left in the ground after him like a superhero. So impressive!
I find it so hilarious that, when this type of comparison is done the other way around (I.e. favoring the man), all the guys are like “Of course! Because men are physically more capable.” But in this situation they’re saying “Well she’s way lighter… she didn’t spin as fast… he somehow did a harder version of the same thing, so it doesn’t matter that he didn’t do it as well…” 😂 My fellow men. We can bear the weight of the L, if we bear it together. Accepting a well earned L is mature and masculine.This L will make us better. Let’s hold the L, shall we?
exactly! and there isn't even a huge weight difference. it was only about 20 pounds. some people were claiming that the man is almost 70lb heavier than her and so has a harder time spinning
i agree and especially in a sport which has a lot less of a physical gap between the genders. i’d argue the man’s tricks looked more aggressive and fast pace while hers was more elegant.
@@lummy3180which arguably is the main separation between men and women’s gymnastics. Women’s gymnastics seems a lot like ballet. A lot of emphasis put on making incredibly difficult feats look easy and elegant.
No doubt that mckayla is an amazing vaulter, but comparing a vault specialist's best ever vault with an all around gymnast's random vault is a bit questionable
I think McKayla Maroney based off of the height of the vault and also when she landed her chest was facing up while Kohei Uchimura’s chest was facing down but they both did AMAZING jobs!
