Here our trio perform this as an instrumental ballad. The empathetic bass playing is played by Nick Haywood and the tasteful brush work on kit is played by Niko Schauble. The music was written by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. It was written for the 1944 Musical "On The Town" whose simple but poignant plot is of 3 sailors on 24 hour shore leave, meeting 3 women, before returning to their ship to leave for war. Betty Comden sang it in the show. Later it was popularised by Tony Bennett -voice and Bill Evans -piano in their duo albums of 1975 and 1977. Later an instrumental trio version with Evans, Edgar Gomez (bass ) and Jack De Johnette (drums) was rediscovered from the German studio sessions of 1968. It has become a favourite at my gigs with its pathos and simple melodic and harmonic beauty. Recorded 2023. We had limited cameras at the session as engineer is playing drums. However I'll post a snippet of their vision later. Enjoy!!
